Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Support bitcoin.org SOPA blackout on 18 Jan

Regardless of the actual importance of the law, taking drastic action makes the project seem unstable and unprofessional.
I guess defeating SOPA is good, but I find it annoying that people are putting so much effort into this one law when there are thousands of terrible laws already in existence and this style of government will inevitably continue to create more terrible laws.

this story sounds fishy to me. i've moved way more money thru mtgox than this guy and i've NEVER had a problem.
stories like these always start coming out when the price rises.
More stories now because more action now. Do you have multiple accounts accessing from the same IP? Probably not, so you don't get frozen.

Here is the catch: My 262 BTC is currently held at Tradehill, and I am unsure of how long it will take to get the coins out. You can follow the saga here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=58709.0I need to get access to these coins to pay bills and complete several hardware deals I have made. If someone will pay me 240 BTC now, I will pledge to them the 262 BTC tied up at Tradehill. The timeline for payment is uncertain....could be tomorrow, could be next week. Great return on investment for someone with extra coins. You can transfer the funds to another TH now right? So no trust (except trusting TH to eventually pay)?

Most probably, someone made a mistake (typo) registering a bitcoin address with their pool.
I believe it's about 1 in 4billion that you would typo and come up with a valid bitcoin address. It unimaginably more unlikely than that you would typo to an address that someone had the key for.

I just told a friend yesterday about bitcoins to use for online poker... He was ALL ABOUT IT. Unfortunately I told him about another poker site, that it looks like is now not sending deposits... It sounds like Seals With Clubs is the biggest/best poker site I should be telling poker folks about to get them to use bitcoins?
I like it the best, just a shame there isn't more action.. I'd be alot more into bitcoin poker if the games weren't so sparse.. So would alot of my friends.. Tell them to buy their chips now, games are coming.

You can create transactions that require multiple signatures to spend. Thus you can store coins in a way that requires both your memorized password and a co-signing from someone (perhaps an online wallet provider or a friend) who agrees to delay signing all your spends.
Further you can create a transaction that will allow spending by ( (you + friend) or (just your emergency backup key) ), and store that emergency backup key somewhere secure. This protects you against your friend losing the key.
This isn't commonly done now, but I'm sure it will be in the future. Do you have an immediate need?
This is nice now while were all free and happy. But how firm is the agreement when he's emailed pictures of my broken face? And he's not immune to capture either. Plus if we're held separately we'll each deceive ourselves into thinking they still can't get the funds because of the other one being free and cave earlier than normal. Never know when the need will arise.

I predict the TV show will have no further impact on bitcoin, and that after viewing it people will be complaining on this forum that 'they didn't mention bitcoin enough' and 'they didn't say how great it is'.
I agree with this. The show is a fiction drama, most viewers, 98%, won't even have the thought cross their mind that bitcoin is even real. They will think of it as fiction on a fiction show. I don't know about anyone else, but when I watch a movie or TV show I'm not instantly compelled to start googling the names of companies or technologies in the show. The people who 'get' bitcoin or will anytime soon are mostly here. The masses are going to take 3-10 exposures to start taking it seriously. Mark one down imo. Get ready for 123678 wft-Bitcoin-is-a-real-thing moments over the next 3 months.

Concerning the offline transactions feature...
Would a feature like this be used for a large company like Best Buy? Best Buy would create multiple wallets on each cash register that would be offline. At the end of the day the wallets are collected, imported on an online computer, and then broadcasted.
I don't think so, more like this. Spends go to addresses that require multiple keys to move. Every teller can have a watching version of the main secure wallet. Nothing need happen except when the controllers of the funds need to move them, then they pass around the transaction each signing it. edit: Just one more problem Bitcoin solves. No more sticky fingered tellers.
