821  Other / Meta / Re: Unbann:CroIsBest,RussiaIsBest,PokemonFun,HateNATO,HateEu are banned on: January 29, 2017, 07:57:55 PM
While your ban wont be lifted, it is possible to have a permanent ban lifted if you ask to be unbanned in a couple of months and demonstrate that you understand the rules now, and will avoid breaking them. It isn't very common that this is done, but because your honesty is refreshing, your chances of it happening are slightly higher. If that does happen, I'd highly advise making sure you are well aware of all of the rules. If there is something you don't understand, you are more than welcome to send a message to any moderator and they will help you out. It is very important that you don't evade your ban if you want any chance at being unbanned in the future.
822  Other / Meta / Re: why has kiklo(u=357609) not yet tagged or banned for FUD? on: January 29, 2017, 07:38:02 PM
Ignore button is probably your best bet. I just read through a few pages of their recent posts and didn't find anything that warrants a ban. A couple posts are of questionable quality, but you don't get banned for having one bad post in twenty. Any of their opinions that I assume you are referring to as FUD can be responded to reasonably.
823  Economy / Reputation / Re: Got negative trust [no reason] [WTF] on: January 26, 2017, 12:48:56 AM
All I want is my rep to be what it should be, positive.

I don't need to make 20 posts, I just need my loan for my tuition.

What lesson do I need to learn?

Don't scam?

That thread is not real. You cannot show it on here, therefore it is not real.

Cheers!

I figure I'll help you out with this one, and confirm that the thread is real for the sake of saving you from having to keep denying it.
824  Other / Meta / Re: Can we boot half of the users out of this forum? on: January 25, 2017, 10:15:21 PM
683,977 accounts (73%) have never made a single post.

The question is... why?

I know the staff battle spam on a daily basis.  Banning a user for spam would remove their spam post, leaving them with 0 posts, and inability to make new posts.  The account itself is not deleted.

Bad things happen when accounts are deleted. Thats part of the reason why we don't delete accounts here. I've never seen it done so I can't really say what specifically, but when I say bad things, I mean it damages/disrupts the forums. I read additional details years ago, but I don't remember where.
825  Other / Meta / Re: Account deletion request on: January 25, 2017, 09:42:40 PM
You can't delete an account. Your best option if you want to leave here for good, is to change your password to something ridiculously strong so it can't be compromised.

As I said in another thread also in Meta, accounts can't be deleted. You can delete your posts  sans those in certain boards that can't be deleted, disable any security questions, and change your password to something very strong that can't be hacked.

826  Other / Meta / Re: Q: Should Lauda *really* be a moderator of bitcointalk A: no on: January 25, 2017, 02:22:32 AM
I've been making an active effort to lock threads in meta once they have reached a conclusion. If anyone has any reason why the thread should be unlocked, you are welcome to request that it be unlocked, and I'll happily do so. But Meta is one of those sections that spammers feel that they can hide their spam, and be outraged when their posts are deleted under the guise of "this is supposed to be a special section about the forum!".
827  Economy / Collectibles / Re: WTS Russian Icons on: January 23, 2017, 08:21:14 PM
Russian Icons as in religious paintings? It's a phrase that never really translated well to modern english, so most people won't have a clue what you are looking for if you don't clarify.
828  Other / Meta / Re: how to delete my account? on: January 23, 2017, 06:01:45 PM
I'm trying to delete my forum account, but I don't see an option for that?

Can somebody point me in the right direction?

829  Other / Meta / Re: This is for the Mod that have deleted my last post on: January 22, 2017, 11:04:45 PM
Just a simple question: Did you read other people's post or just mine?

Is this your only question? Typically Meta is for people who have questions regarding the forum. It is the right place to ask about moderator actions, but you just kind of seem to be complaining, I would probably recommend trying to be more proactive before having a fit next time.

In response to your question, you are not the only person to have posts deleted. However, I will say, when I see two or three reports against the same person in different threads, I tend to look at all of that user's posts, not just the ones reported.
830  Economy / Digital goods / Re: Vouch copies available - Store and send bitcoins as image - Starting at 1$ on: January 21, 2017, 08:06:21 PM
This would be really neat if true. I think you would probably make a lot more money making your method open source and allowing people to do it themselves, accepting donations.

Frankly speaking, you are charging people to have them send their Bitcoins to you, I can't think of anyone in their right mind that would do so. More than a few people (myself included) are hesitant to trust even well known physical coin makers like Smoothie/Casascius/OGNasty with our private keys, and they have a significant business presence and stake for not scamming. I'm sure plenty of people  would throw $10 your way as a thank you for allowing them to make their own BTC images if you make your method open source.
831  Other / Meta / Re: banned for posting and sending personal messages on: January 21, 2017, 06:14:32 PM
ok if you are so smart , give me other options .

Leave the forum and don't come back? Temporary ban means you did something wrong and need to reflect on those actions as not to repeat them again. Permanent bans mean you either repeated what you should have learned not to do, or did something severe that doesn't deserve a second chance. The permanent ban means that you are no longer welcome here. If you just want to read the forum, I suppose you are welcome to do so, but you are not invited to join any conversations or create any threads/posts.
832  Other / Meta / Re: How anonymous are the votes cast by users in polls here at bitcointalk.org? on: January 20, 2017, 01:22:05 AM
Hello, bitcointalk.org keepers,

Thank you in advance for answering my questions.

I am creating a poll in general discussion about how people use bitcoin, and I want to understand the policy regarding anonymity and privacy first, since some of the poll options will include sensitive details.  One of the poll questions may involve voter admission to participating in activities that may get them into hot water if the info is ever shared.

I want to make a disclaimer in the poll description /details that explains to the voters that the aggregated results will be referenced in published articles several times in several places over the course of the life of the poll.   I want users to understand that I personally will not know who voted on what, and I want them to know that none of my readers will know who voted on what.

What I don't know is how the moderators and / or owners of bitcointalk.org treat the data related to the votes.
Does anyone have the ability to access the individual votes, to see who votes on what or to alter the votes in any way? If so does the current privacy policy of bitcointalk.org protect this data?   I assume it is protected to The extent of the law, and any details (if they are even available) would only be shared in the event of subpoena by law enforcement agency .... but the privacy policy and terms of use are a lot to read... so can you clairify in simple terms that I may quote in the explaination of the poll to potential voters?

I want honest poll results and paranoia tends to skew these kinds of results so I aim to ease the minds of poll voters in order to deliver a more accurate picture of the ways people are using their coin.   I aim to shine a positive light into the reputation of bitcoin.  I aim to prove that NOT EVERY user is trolling for a hit man.  We are consumers.

Thank you in advance for your thoughts and explanations.
With respect,
Lori Brown

I can't speak for what level of access Administrators have, but moderators cannot see individual votes. They can however edit the poll, though I can't think of any instance that has ever been done.

I just searched for a poll so I can show you what kind of options a moderator would have, again no idea if an Admin can see more information or not.

So technically speaking, a moderator could mess with the results of the poll by changing the names of what people have already voted for, switching the order, or adding additional options. That said, doing so would probably strip them of their moderator title. But that is a definitive, moderators cannot see what individual users have voted for.

A valid subpoena with a specific request will be answered by Theymos within his obligation. I'm assuming the direction you are going with the poll is, "What have you bought with BTC" with some options being from .onion domains. I highly doubt law enforcement trying to bring someone up on drug charges would ask for poll data. If you had been dealing illegal goods through your PMs,  you are probably screwed though. (Don't do that)
833  Economy / Reputation / Re: Negative feedback based on someone's personal dislike on: January 20, 2017, 12:45:23 AM
Recently I was left a negative feedback by devthedev based on his personal dislike toward me: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1696031.msg17388605#msg17388605

This forum has always attracted me with free speech - it is one of the places where it's possible freely discuss different things/issues which other "free speech" forums do not tolerate. Well, maybe I'm a bigot and racist but it's not a reason to leave negative feedback for it because it's supposed to be used to show one's trust, not political/religious views or personal dislikes.

What if I leave someone a negative feedback for being a feminist just because I don't like feminists? I conciser this movement harmful.  Would it be fair?

What do you thank about such "feedback"? Any comment from mods/admins?

"Something you don't like doesn't mean bad."

Sure, why not? Leave negative feedback for anyone who has ever used the letter "z" in any of their posts if you want. If you are on default trust, you will probably quickly be removed, otherwise, you are completely entitled to your opinions. If someone shares the same opinion and doesn't find you trustworthy because you have used the letter "z" in your posts, then they will value that feedback. Else, they will disregard it.

I refuse to believe that feedback has a numerical score. If someone want to judge someone's trustworthiness based on the letters they use in their posts, their gender, or any offensive comments they make, that is completely on them. I don't typically think someone's personal beliefs are a good indicator of trustworthiness, but sometimes it can play a factor.

There are very few rules when it comes to feedback. People can interpret it however they way.
834  Other / Meta / NEW Scam Coin Section on: January 19, 2017, 07:45:35 PM
I think the difference between an alt currency and not is whether or not it is used for financial remittance. If the main purpose of the blockchain that the "coin" is on is to be a token/smart contract mechanism, but it has value and traded as such on an exchange or between people, its a currency. Though I don't know if economists have a  bottom line for how many people must accept something as value before its considered a currency, the groups of alt coin communities essentially make up that user base albeit probably scaled down.

If the "coin" has no financial value, and its the blockchain technology behind it that is useful for some purpose, I'd agree that its its own thing. Perhaps a project or a service depending on what it is and for what purpose.

ICOs can be done poorly, and they can be done well. Premines, what any premine is used for, POS/POW, etc etc are all things that an individual can determine whether or not its something they agree with. Determine what is a scam for yourself, as each person has a broader or narrower definition than what we can easily define. Bitcointalk's general definition of a scam coin, is one that has malware built in. Anything beside that is just either an (in)competent developer, a poor/valid vision or direction the developer wants the "coin" to go in, and the launch mechanisms which individuals can decide if they support or not.
835  Other / Meta / Re: Need threads get deleted by a mod on: January 17, 2017, 03:44:37 PM
hi i need 3 threads get deleted, can get a mod in contact with me?

Moderators don't often delete threads on request. You can lock them, and move your own threads to the archival section if you want them out of the way so to speak. If they are spam or something, you can report them and a moderator will handle it.

*edit* Threads moved to Archival, topic closed.

837  Other / Meta / Re: What bugs me about this forum somehow on: January 12, 2017, 07:59:49 PM
People are more than welcome to make suggestions for how to make the forum better. Things aren't the way they are because someone is pulling strings or has some ulterior motives, things are the way they are because they are the best possible solutions working with what is available. If you have an idea that is doable, and no one can shoot down, then its a good idea and likely to be implemented. Keep in mind that proposals should probably be possible though.

If you are going to make suggestions, please back up your suggestions, give ways to accomplish what you would like to see done, and a list of pros/cons. Saying you want a decentralized forum is all fine and good, but perhaps suggest how that would work, who would develop it, pros/cons, etc.

838  Other / Meta / Re: [Controversial] Who's to blame when an account gets hacked? on: January 08, 2017, 06:36:11 PM
(...) email/password has been changed recently (...).

Hey,

I recommend to change your passwords from time to time. It's a good habit.
Personally I'm going to change my password right now and it doesn't mean that account doesn't belongs to me anymore. We shouldn't exaggerate.

If password and email has been changed recently then it might mean something.

"Hey, his password has been changed! Scammer?"   Grin

My password has been recently changed! xD
Best regards.

Having a recently changed password doesn't mean they have been hacked, it means its worth doing an extra layer of diligence to protect yourself. I could decide to start frequenting the Russian local section to practice my language skills. It doesn't mean I've been hacked, but it certainly would be suspicious enough that I'd recommend someone use escrow with me when trading.

The reason I used the tape analogy is because unfortunately rape victims have been blamed in the past. It's horrible and should never be ok in any situation. I couldn't really think of another instance when the victim would be blamed so that's what I went with.

I guess the main issues brought up are the fact that how can you really prove that your account was in fact hacked? I'll be sure to sign a message with every transaction from this point forward and I have a difficult password. The only possible way for me to be hacked would be to know the password to my encrypted computer, then the login password then my bitcointalk password. I hope that I never get hacked because it seems like people just naively trust that it's the original account owner too often. If I were a lender I wouldn't take an account for collateral if they couldn't sign a message from 6 months ago (give or take) just like I would never buy one of those cheap accounts you always see being sold by brand new accounts. Hero's for 0.04BTC and things like that. They obviously have to be hacked because no one would spend a year and a half of their life building up an account to sell it for $40 IMO. I know I wouldn't.

Anyways sorry about the rape analogy but if it's not breaking any rules I'll leave it to make a point. Here are a few instances where it's happened in the past:

http://huffpost.com/ca/entry/12538648
http://www.euronews.com/2017/01/06/canada-judge-fights-to-save-job-after-victim-blaming-rape-trial
http://jezebel.com/5855255/canadian-rape-case-is-a-celebration-of-victim-blaming

Another good article on the issue: https://inequalitygaps.org/first-takes/gender-roles-of-women-since-1945/rape-where-the-blame-lies/

Yeah, you are fine, its not against any rules, and I get your point. I thought you were making a comparison for shock value rather than to make a point.

839  Other / Meta / Re: [Controversial] Who's to blame when an account gets hacked? on: January 08, 2017, 08:16:37 AM
It sort of depends, each case is different. At the very least, before you deal with someone, check to see if their email/password has been changed recently, check to see if their language or posting habits have changed or any other suspicious behavior. If you are uncertain, ask for a signed Bitcoin message or some other type of identify that you can use as a 2FA check to make sure it is who you think you are dealing with.

Glancing past the rape analogy which I don't think was entirely necessary as a comparison of liability, and going with a still controversial topic, I'll use guns. Say you own a gun, and you leave it on your kitchen table. If someone breaks in, steals it, and uses it to hurt someone, are you at fault? Conversely, if you keep your gun in a safe, someone breaks in and spends an hour to break into your safe with an oxyacetylene torch and a sawzall, and then uses it to hurt someone, are you at fault?

If you made a good faith effort at protecting your account, and it was stolen at reasonably no fault of your own, I don't think its the account owner fault. If you are taking a picture of yourself to post on social media, and you have passwords.txt open on your computer and visible in the background, I think at the very least you should feel bad about damage done by the hacker and try and do something about it.
840  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: About Collision on: January 08, 2017, 05:23:34 AM
Collisions are actually far easier than you think.  I am working on that now.

Stay tuned.

Just think, my VanityGen trys about 880,000 keys per second.  Every hour, I check over 300 million keys.  Still think I won't find a collision?  There has to be one out there somewhere.

Nope. 300 million seems like a lot until you realize billions, trillions, quadrillions, octodecillions are nothing compared to the probability of a collision. I'll have to find my post referencing it, but I wrote a paper on electron/atom phasing. Theres a really old story about shaolin monks being able to phase through solid objects, with their proof being a man who was found part way through a wall, with no damage to the wall and various other structural engineering things that I don't care about that show that he wasn't built into the wall. Without getting too deep into the theory of it, the electrons in your atoms have a chance of passing through those of another substance if they hit together at the same resonant frequency, causing the atoms to effectively "teleport" through material. There are a few octillion atoms in a human body (1x10^27). Again, I'd have to find all of the math again to actually prove it to you, so take this as anecdotal evidence until I do, but my conclusion was that if 7 billion people on earth walked into walls non stop for 76 years without break, with a 1 second interval between bumping into the wall and trying again, there was something like a 0.75% chance that someone would walk through a wall.

That is a far greater chance of happening than finding a collision. People always post that infographic talking about converting the solar system into energy and creating a perfect quantum computer. I'm saying you have a much higher chance of walking through a wall than colliding. Is it impossible? Well, I suppose not, there was that monk that was inexplicably found in a wall. But the chance is so low, its not worth wasting your time on.

Generate some neat Bitcoin addresses, and sell them. Use the proceeds to buy lottery tickets.

*edit* Google has a DWave Quantum computer that you can rent for $10-20k/hour of compute time. I wouldn't be surprised if someone has already tried to use it to find a collision.
