I use https://www.bitaddress.org to print me some bills. Then i cut them and fund with whatever small amounts i need. I write the value they carry by hand after funding with an android phone. The page script is clients side so the priv keys are in your possession at all times so you can even save the page as html and it will work. I'm not affiliated in any way just using the service.

I'd love to see this automated in the official frontend client - select amount, hit print.

I don't like the temptation of reusing bills. Reusing instead of tearing up and making a new one really defeats much of the point of Bitcoin doesn't it. Same for holograms really; I prefer those for promotion.

Temptation to reuse? Meh. Just tear them up, it's not like they are hard to make. I don't understand your objection to holograms. They make it so you can't reuse the physical tokens (which is what you just said you didn't like).  I don't understand how you can be against both of those options.
1262  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: CGMINER GPU bitforce overclock monitor fanspeed RPC in C linux/windows/osx 2.2.1 on: January 30, 2012, 07:45:34 PM
Just pulled from git and got ...

Code:
./cgminer --auto-gpu --auto-fan --submit-stale --gpu-reorder
[2012-01-30 13:31:10] .: --gpu-reorder: unrecognized option

And still shows 2.2.0 to boot...
Did you forget autogen?

I'm running c0e8819d and it's running fine, although it did take longer than normal to start.
1263  Economy / Services / Re: Looking for someone to create/modify software for this forum [1100+ BTC] on: January 30, 2012, 06:37:58 PM
Security
Use salted multi-iteration hashing for passwords using one of the SHA-2 algorithms. Passwords in the existing SHA-1 format need to be automatically upgraded once the user logs in again.
So while doing some research last night, my partner found http://codahale.com/how-to-safely-store-a-password/

I think the article makes a valid point.  What do you think, theymos?  Maybe bcrypt(SHA-256(password)) if we want to be uber paranoid
1264  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bringing decentralization back to the Bitcoin network. on: January 30, 2012, 05:42:05 PM
I'm not personally interested in using p2pool but is it correct to say I would have to install a bitcoind on all my miners OR have to port forward my router for external miners and live with this new point of failure ?

I don't have bitcoind or p2pool running on any of my miners, all they do is mine. I have the nodes on a separate server where all the miners connect - much easier to set up. And I use a backup pool just as I would with any other pool. You can use a centralized pool or another p2pool node. There are several people who set up p2pool nodes that anyone can connect to as well, no need to run anything but the miner.

I do the same.  Multiple machines with mining programs installed and one machine with bitcoind and p2pool.

This is no different than running your own pool with any other software.  It is a little more work than connecting to someone else's pool, but that's because you are letting someone else do the work.

As other people said, if you are on the same subnet, you don't need to do anything with your router.  However, I wanted people on the internet to be able to connect to my pool, so I opened some ports.  It isn't necessary, but I think it's good for the network.  If you want to use my server (p2pool.stitthappens.com:8336) as a way to try out p2pool, as a backup pool or even as your primary pool, go ahead, I'm not taking any fees (although I am going to turn donate author on soon).

1265  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: PaperCoins on: January 30, 2012, 05:32:39 PM
I just started saving some of my BTC on a sheet printed out from bitaddress.org.

I was originally planning on just filling all of the addresses with the same amount, but I like the idea of having varying amounts instead.

I don't know if I would use them for trade. I think using them as storage would be more useful to me.

Awesome. I was looking for something like shallot, but didn't have any luck

Cool project
1269  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [RELEASE] Liquidcoin (Speculation based) on: January 28, 2012, 07:11:39 PM
Bitcoin is leading because there are businesses around bitcoin also there is a real team of developers.

Liquidcoin is analogous to gold.

1gold. You mine gold so many man-hours per ounce.
1lqc. You mine lqc so many per difficulty.

2gold. When the new world was discovered, the price of gold halved due to the new supply added.
2lqc. As new equipment is added like fpga's or 16cores, the price of lqc might halve.

3gold. New technology allows people to mine gold at lower cost, but the current supply prevents large amounts of inflation.
3lqc. New mining algorithms or software allows people to mine at lower cost, but the current supply puts a lid on inflation.

4gold.  The whole country could mine gold, but the price would crash.
5lqc.  The whole world could mine lqc, but the price would crash.

5gold/lqc.  If coins are hoarded and the price rises, people will just mine more

lol dude. No. Just No

As soon as you ask for a payout I get an email. If I am not sleeping it will normally be about 5 mins. If I am sleeping it could take 6 hours, maybe more.

Any idea when you will have this automated?  an automated once daily payout would be really spiffy Smiley

1271  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [150GH/s] p2pool: Decentralized, DoS-resistant, Hop-Proof pool on: January 28, 2012, 04:34:47 AM
I was just able to configure P2pool. Starting next week, I will move all of my 500 MH/s to P2pool from deepbit. It is nice to have decentralized mining pool. I feel P2pool will be the future of bitcoin mining.
Why next week?
1272  Economy / Lending / Re: It's your BTC, so why shouldn't YOU get the Lion's share of the profits ? on: January 28, 2012, 01:35:48 AM
What are you doing to earn interest?
1273  Economy / Speculation / Re: shit, shit, shit on: January 28, 2012, 01:29:58 AM
Bitcoin price is an illusion that only stands because we all chose to believe in it.

1274  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: BTC protocol question - why do I get money back? on: January 28, 2012, 12:49:00 AM
I think I'm just not understanding something about the BTC protocol. Can someone explain why Bitcoin splits my transaction into seemingly random-sized smaller transactions, and why it automatically creates a new second address during a transaction ( that is, it sends some coins back to me at a new address)?

I thought you could just cleanly sign over a specific number of coins to a new address.

Thanks!

When the output of a transaction is used as the input of another transaction, it must be spent in its entirety. Sometimes the coin value of the output is higher than what the user wishes to pay. In this case, the client generates a new Bitcoin address, and sends the difference back to this address. This is known as change.
The wallet file contains the private keys for change addresses, and they can receive and send coins normally. However, the GUI in the default client does not display them in the address book.

1276  Economy / Lending / Re: Let me get this right about lenders? on: January 28, 2012, 12:32:35 AM
People don't loan money to gamblers.  Or crack heads for that matter...

People loan money when they perceive the risk is low.  Gambling is not low risk.

So next time i should lie about the loan? and be dishonest?
Besides im not using the 85 btc to gamble it, im using to pay back the 3 i owe so that i owe 1 person, better to owe 1 person then 3 i think?
Slow down man.  Where did I tell you to be dishonest?

Also, paying off your credit with credit is usually not a good idea.  It sounds like the real reason that you wouldn't get a loan is because you already owe 3 people money.  If you can't pay back them, why would you be able to pay back a new lender?

So wait. You are mad because people won't loan money to someone who wants to use the loan to gamble?
1279  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: BIP 17 on: January 28, 2012, 12:00:51 AM
somebody suggested that he had contacted a commercial company for making HW keys for bitcoin wallets - similar to what mtgox has.
to use such a device with bitcoin P2SH might be very helpful - 1 key on the PC , 1 key on the device
Even if Gavin does have a monetary incentive to implement P2SH, that doesn't mean he will only support BIP 16. It just means that he will want the code written quickly.  If he wants a company behind it, that is just more incentive to make sure that P2SH works properly.

The WTF image was posted because your question has little relevance, not because of some misunderstanding.

excuse me for being lazy but I keep seeing a lot of talk about 5970 , ive been too busy to keep up with the conversation - but if someone could tell me whats going on in respect  the 5970 development I would really appreciate it

my 5970 gets 380 mhash per core in windows 7 with the ccc 11.8

is it possible to do better?

thanks in advance for filling me in!
Same hashrates as you except I am mining on linux. (My U is a little less than expected because I have p2pool as my secondary pool)
