541  Economy / Marketplace / Interest of a Donation site? on: December 05, 2011, 01:59:40 AM
Hey everyone! I'm just thinking about ways to help out the community. I was thinking, that there are quite a few generous people on here, yet there are also people who may struggle to hit a bill payment or something. Aside from a loan, I can't think of a way to really help this individual get out of this bind. This is what I suggest:

A full fledged donation site! You would get to create essentially a 'want' add, stating why you need the coins, and such. I'm also thinking that other coinage measures, and maybe even like a respect system (even rewards or something if it takes off). I'm hoping it would be a mutual, "You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours," type of deal. The site would serve no intervention in the funds transferred.

I'm just curious, what would the interest of this site be (before I get to coding)?
Also, I'm not sure where to have posted this, so if there are any complaints on that, I'll move it.
Oh and if there is already a site like this, I didn't know, so let me know!

Thanks!

Reply @Bruno.

Yeah, not sure where I got the Bruce... I'll edit the post, sorreh.
You weren't aware of your work on Bitcoin 100? Let alone Bitcoin100. heh.

+1

(I'm sending legolouman a PM after I pen this post)

Time for me to apologize, again! Regardless of what others have so far commented on your post (quoted), personally I have to say that YOUR SPOT ON!, although I do find your last sentence irritating, of which I will address at the end of this post.

That's really fucked up on my part by implying and/or characterizing the whole group as hippies, drug users, pigs, etc., when I (and us) are taken aback when Bitcoiners are characterized as a whole due to a Silk-Road-type article or other negative press.

Each time I viewed the pepper spraying (yes, I've truly viewed them several times), my insides boil with anger. THAT IS TRULY FUCKED UP!

The other good point you've made is that they're kicked out from the encampment, having no way to clean up the mess for if they really wanted to, for they would, again, be pepper sprayed, then arrested.

In short, my point(s) of reference was influenced by only a small handful of articles and short videos I've recently read/seen online. That said, I need to retract my off-based post, for I now feel that it's somewhat not appropriate.

Here's the olive branch: For your discomfort (not a snide reference), I took the liberty to donate 1 BTC to Bitcoin100 in your name, legolouman. Please advise me otherwise if I shouldn't have done that.

As promised, one last thing.

but I'm now done with you, and this thread.

I feel sad that you feel this way after expressing your valid points concerning OWS and the calling of me out. Your unique insight on this issue would certainly shed a better light on what's happening in regards to OWS. And don't be done with me. I want you, or others, to STICK IT UP MY ASS if and when I'm wrong. I need YOU TO STICK IT UP MY ASS. Perhaps, after awhile, I'll learn to like it and book a flight to Pattaya. I heard there may be a convention there. (last 2 sentences in this post were the only 2 that's not serious)

Peace, Bruno

I don't know what to say. I was unaware of the Bitcoin 100 project, and how good at heart you really are. Let me try to get this out.

True! Via Bitcoin? and, possibly moreover, political interest. We know it's not Joe with his hash pipe pulling out $10 from his baggy pants, having it matched by his smoke buddy Rick, and together donating the $20 to the guys serving the free food and providing the free porta-johns. If I've read the articles correctly, these folks can't even pick up after themselves, leaving the public and privately provided venues a mess across the nation.

When I read that, I took it as ignorance. Ignorance, that is shared by most of the world. Ignorance that is used on the Protesters, comparing them to hippies, slobs, and freeloaders. Those protesters, as I've said, have guts. They have the guts no one else has to stand up and say 'This isn't right!' When I read that, I felt an attitude pointing out that they don't deserve the respect they should have. Comparing the usage of BTC users-Silkroad users and Occupy-hippies was a good way to put it.

As for other info and my opinions, I'd rather not get into them yet in this post.

I feel the need to apologize, as I was unaware of the Bitcoin 100 project. I didn't know that your off key comments were coming from someone who has a good heart. I'm honored that you donated to the Bitcoin 100 project on behalf of me. I almost feel that I don't deserve it, as I'm only stating facts. I feel that people should be informed, as to the misinformation that the press seems to be doing lately.

Thank you, and as I see it fit, I'm sorry.

As for the Occupy stuff. The Macing of the students (I assume is the video you were referring to), is entirely pathetic. It wasn't even a single spray, I'm told the officer unloaded the entire can onto them.

I'd like to add one more thing into this post, as to police brutality. This was a 'harmless beanbag round'

I'd also like to add the OWS donate address.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I feel as if I owe you. Not to mention the new found respect for this thread, and everyone in it a bit more. I will enjoy sticking it in your ass (couldn't resist).
If you find it necessary Bruno, apology accepted.

Edit-I typed Bruce (because I am a derp)
544  Economy / Marketplace / Re: [BOUNTY 20 BTC] Graphics Artist - Client logo and icons needed on: December 04, 2011, 06:25:37 AM
Can I try only an icon? I'm pretty good at pixel art, so a 64x64 might not be too bad.

By all means, I just don't know yet what icons I will need until I start laying out the UI.  However, I'll probably need stuff like send-button, money-recieved icon, money-sent icon, locks for encrypted/locked wallets.   "please wait" icon.   (I really don't like the 0.5.0 icons).

Is 64x64 a good icon size?  Could there be a problem with scaling down to a smaller size?  Perhaps, try scaling your 64x64 down to 24x24 and see if it still looks good.  If not, maybe make provide a good-looking smaller one along with it?  I'll throw in an extra 0.2 BTC for that Smiley

I don't see why 64x64 wouldn't make a good icon size. I'll come up with a few, along with a few smaller button type things. If any of them turn out like I'm hoping, I'll post em!

Also note, the smaller the icon, the better I'm going to be at it. By pixel art, I'm talking like 16x16 is what I'm used to. With that said, this will be more of a try and go, you might not hear back from me immediately. I also have to agree that .5 in general was a fail. I don't like the icons, it makes the coinage factor seem less important.
545  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: While the Occupy Movement Considers Their Next Move, Perhaps... on: December 04, 2011, 06:21:02 AM

I've said this in other threads, but any of the Anonymous (the hacktivist group) funding is done through BTC. I'm aware of an OWS fund, and OO (oakland) and a general Occupy fund. How do you think they get their tents, food, supplies? Thousands of dollars have moved through those accounts.

This gives me hope. Sorry I've miss reading, or remembering, your such posts, for I would have been less inclined to pen my last post, above.

That's fine if you've missed my posts. That is the key point of their use of Bitcoin. Transparency and Anonymity. Of course, a bunch of people protesting because they have no job and are fed up with the government can't just come up with the resources they have. The Occupy movement has a lot more backing than it appears on its facade.

That comment seems to have irritated me. You can't listen to most of the media's comments. They are living at these places, when they are evicted, with tear gas and bean bag pellets being used on them, how can they clean up an encampment. From what I've seen they are perfectly fine for a long term camp, considering. The hippy inference also annoys me, these are normal people who realize something is wrong, without getting into details, they are right. I'd tell you more, but I'm now done with you, and this thread.

549  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to create bills on the cheap on: December 04, 2011, 02:42:54 AM
Here's an experiment to try. Print key codes on fiat currency and release it back into the wild. Wait and see how long it takes before the amount is redeemed. This may help spread awareness.

THat is actually freaking brilliant.  And you could take back the money if too much time went by.

A lot of people would need to be doing it for anyone to notice...there are a lot of pieces of paper out there.

And it would be somewhat difficult to print a unique code on each bill, for most people.
I think it is technically illegal to print or write on US currency, although it's probably not enforced very often.

I thought the same thing, but WheresGeorge.com does it. However, after looking into it still illegal.

"Defacement of currency is a violation of Title 18, Section 333 of the United States Code. Under this provision, currency defacement is generally defined as follows: Whoever mutilates, cuts, disfigures, perforates, unites or cements together, or does any other thing to any bank bill, draft, note, or other evidence of debt issued by any national banking association, Federal Reserve Bank, or Federal Reserve System, with intent to render such item(s) unfit to be reissued, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than six months, or both. "

Take this idea and run with it. Rip a bill in half and print bitcoin on them.

Would printing BTC on them be 'mutilating'?

Defacing, yes... illegal

Unfit to be reissued? If you use holograms I'd think yes. Otherwise?
550  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Deepbit PPS or Proportional? on: December 03, 2011, 11:27:27 PM
Well I've seriously been contemplating the actual effectiveness of the Proportional Payout mode on Deepbit. Who uses it? How much do you get paid per M/Hash (or another comparable figure)? Is it really worth it for the little guys, such as >1G/h?

Thanks!

A lot of people use it.  You get paid proportionally to what you put in, it's different for everyone.  Proportional takes a 3% fee, whereas PPS takes a 10% fee.  Some pools have 0% proportional and PPS, look around.  Also, I think you meant < 1 Gh/s and it doesn't really matter either way, just don't solo mine if you want quick returns Tongue

Okay, so from what you're saying, the obvious truth that regardless of your payout speed, it is the same amount. Even with the proportional. Thanks for pointing out my Hash abbreviation error. I seem to do that a lot.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=53200.0

Beyond the hash abbreviation, was the greater than sign.  Hopefully that doesn't happen often too !

Oh my, that scares me... Thanks for pointing that out... I've decided I'm going to try it on a smaller pool, and thus increase my percentage.

That's the reassurance I was looking for. Power usage is still way lower than any GPU array can compete with, so there are no complaints there.
OK  Grin Its easy to miss some stuff by accident, not trying to be pissy at you. Wink

Oh no, I fully understand. I didn't take it like you were pissy. I don't actively watch the numbers like other people, I just seem to blurt out what I'm thinking. After I'm told I'm mostly wrong, I go back to monitoring. It is a pretty easy tactic.

I don't mean to be skeptical (still) but all of their numbers appear to be 'projected numbers'. From what they are saying, they are currently not hitting/not capable of hitting these numbers, so they make less optimistic calculations, and again, and again. People probably won't get 1.05 G/H at 20W for quite some time in that case.

umm, i don't mean to spoil your buzz, but:

2.  We're currently running stable in the speed range specified.
3.  The power will likely be higher by an as yet determined margin.

In sum, only one of the three is changing and as stated in our pre-order terms, performance is guaranteed to meet the specifications listed or the order can be canceled for a full refund.

That means that the GH/s are correct, and only the wattage is higher (at this point). To me, the relative power usage is still WAY under what it could be, and is therefore a good deal.

That's the reassurance I was looking for. Power usage is still way lower than any GPU array can compete with, so there are no complaints there.
556  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to create bills on the cheap on: December 03, 2011, 10:16:21 PM
I love what you are trying to do. I will add this into the equation.

If talking about US currency as a fiat currency, it is only illegal if you edit the money with a fraudulent intent, or use the modified money fraudulently. Like adding two zeros after a one (making it 100) and using it as a 100$ bill. That's how the 'where's geroge' thing isn't illegal.

I'm going to defend what I said now, while feeling kind of stupid.

The 5830: Where can you find it new? How much does that cost? For what 250 mhash or so?

The 5970: Okay, yes Newegg sold the last bit they had for $300, that was an awesome deal. Where else can I buy a 5970 for $300?Keyword being new! I need to snatch up a bajillion.

As for some of the other, lower end 6xxx series. I feel quite stupid and spoke before thinking. It proves the point of 'sneezing the wrong way will cause a flame war,' at least on this forum.
In that case, I'm going to say that I also took into account the power usage, and obviously the heat/cooling involved.
