A complete outsider who would like to see what's bitcoin and cryptocurrency about, will do a google search and most likely will come here.
What will it see? Fight between the coins and scam accusations. And gambling and a lot of Ponzi attempts. Lovely image, isn't it?

Now let's face the truth:
Altcoins are GREAT! Some of them bring innovation, some of them have great communities, some rise, some fall. Some are scams too. Some will die soon, some will die later, some will prevail.
Bitcoin has the advantage of being the first. Still, bitcoin may learn from them, bitcoin may accept them, bitcoin may evolve. Or may die too.
