Bitcoin / Armory / Armory on macOS: Requires openssl installed with homebrew
|
on: October 30, 2019, 04:57:42 PM
|
Just an announcement in case anybody else has the same problem: I just installed Armory on a relatively new Mac (running OS X Mojave, not the brand new Catalina). Armory did not work, it could not open the app. Starting the relevant script inside the Armory.app folder showed that the error was that a library in /usr/local/opt/openssl/lib could not be opened, that folder was missing. Installing openssl with Homebrew (see https://brew.sh) fixed it!It seems to be an error in building the MacOS executable, where OpenSSL has not been bundled as it should have been.

As I remember, there is a prefix ending with a : which you should manually remove. Also, if there are spaces in the keys, they need to be removed.

Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Bitcoin Gold signer

Hello. I just found this program by Jimmy Song, a former Armory dev. As I understand things, if you export your private keys (WIF format), you can use this code to sign transactions for various forks, including Gold. Be extemely careful! The moment you have exported just one private key, you have compromised your Armory wallet. Move all BTC out of it and into a new wallet before attempting anything like this.

It means that you will only be able to spend the money using the paper backup.
From the paper backup, you can create a full wallet. You do not need the watch-only wallet for that process.

Armory 0.96-beta
Core 0.15.1
That version of Armory is pretty old, and does not work with the latest Bitcoin Core (0.15.1). You need the release candidate, see the first post in the sticky thread called "0.96.4 RC 1" (the actual version number is 0.93.3.99 or something like that).

Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Can you get private keys from a paper backup only?

You need Armory to get the private keys, but you do not need to be online.
Just put Armory on a computer, disconnect it from the Internet, and restore your paper wallet. You can now click on Wallet properties, and somewhere on the window that pops up you can export the private keys. They can then be imported into another wallet. I have not done it myself, but many others have.

Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Export of Private Keys

My questions are the following: a) Does it damage the security of my Armory-wallet by exporting some Private Keys? (In other words: Is it possible in any way that someone could calculate my seed with some of my private keys?) (Ofc. I am aware, that i can not use this single address anymore!)
Yes, it totally compromises your wallet! Just one private key together with the watch-only wallet, or two private keys together are enough to calculate all remaining keys in your wallet! b) What is the best/easiest way to import my Priv Keys so that i can spend the BCH/BTG? c) anything you could add / recommend about this plan?
1. Create a new Armory wallet on your raspberry pi. 2. Back it up. Test the backup. Store the backup as securely as you store the backup of your previous wallet. 3. Move the BTC you want to sell to an exchange. 4. Move the rest to the new wallet. 5. Export all private keys, import them into a BCH wallet. Send your BCH and sell them. 6. Do the same with Gold, but later since many BTG wallets will steal your private keys, and run away with both BTG, BCH and BTC.

Yes, I blacklisted the kernel module for WiFi, but in principle some malware could sneak in and reactivate it. I am not that paranoid, even with current prices my stash is not big enough to warrant the development of malware targeting my RPi specifically. But I should probably blacklist the Bluetooth modules as well... EDIT: Even the RPi 1 is not *frustratingly* slow. It maybe takes half a minute to start Armory, and a tx with many inputs may take 45 seconds to sign. Enough that you start wondering when it will finish, but still less than the time spend on swapping USB sticks etc.

It is but I've had other stuff thrown on my lap these past couple days which need my immediate attention. So, no guarantees.
I also have some BTG in my wallet, but I can fully understand if goatpig does not want to touch that "project" with a ten foot pole. Bitcoin Gold is heavily premined, and would have been ignored if they had not generated interest by airdropping the coin to all BTC holders. They have a history of linking to key-stealing wallets from their web page, wallets that steal both the BTG and the BTC when an unsuspecting user tries to split the coins (both a "web wallet" which asked you to type in the seed, and then promptly took all funds; and 'Electron Gold' which is a fork of Electrum claiming to be from the same developer as Electron Cash, but said developer is very busy warning against it on Reddit, and has posted documentation claiming that it transmits the private keys). It stinks of scam. I guess the only reason the price is still high is that the developers try to pump it - which of course is an argument for dumping as much BTG as possible :-)

You probably have a European character (ü, á or the like) in your username or the path to Armory's folder. That is for some reason not supported.

No, the password encrypts the file. The paper backup is not encrypted - after all the most common use for the backup is to recover from a forgotten password If having a paper with all your bitcoins on it worries you, then Armory is one of the very few wallets that offers a 2-of-3 backup. You can print the three different sheets of the 2-of-3 backup, and store them in three safe places. If a thief gets any of them, it does not help him. If you lose the computer with the wallet, you need to get any two of the three backups, and can use them to recover the wallet.

The developers will need to see your log files to help you. Might as well post them before they ask for it Use pastebin.com and post the link here. It may leak you username and home folder name, but nothing more serious than that.

HDD Encryption is always a good idea. But if your wallet password is really good, then even if the thief does get access to the file, they will not be able to crack it before you have had time to move the BTC to a new wallet.
