1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Mining altcoins with non specialized hardware on: November 23, 2014, 07:09:09 PM
Hi!
Lately I've become very interested in mining altcoins but I am totally new to the whole mining community. I've realized that mining BTC is no longer feasible for an average home computer but would like to try to mine altcoins with a couple of average performing computers that I've got.

As I'm new to the mining community, I'm mostly just want to do this for fun and to learn. I'm therefore not expecting any profits. However I would still like to optimize the use of my hardware and therefore wonder if there any coin where I'd be able to break even with electricity costs?  If not, I'm open for taking losses but would still like to know which coin would currently be the optimal to mine with a desktop computer. Is there any general website for comparing hash rates of different coins?

Is it better to go for a CPU coin or GPU coin?
