481  Economy / Economics / Re: Poor wittle miners taking their ball and going home on: January 15, 2015, 08:46:37 AM
What I don't understand is if all of BTC's coins are going to be fully distributed soon--why do miners matter as much?

From what I've read of it, if all commercial miners disappeared it actually wouldn't matter because there is enough worldwide interest in the currency that people would still support the network (even if it is at cost or at a slight loss)

So going out on a limb here and assuming miners aren't that important in the grand scheme of thing (they were important to mine all the coins initially) then isn't commercial-mining just going to die out and supply/demand will end up being the real deciding value of the currency?

I'm pretty sure most of the commercial mining operations were in it to get rich quick and instantly sold most of their coins to cover their costs--so why would users of BTC even want miners just dumping all their coins as fast as possible?

(and yeah I could be wrong with everything said here, its just what I've gathered from reading around)

Level of intelligence of the people invested here :

Agreed. I feel bad for the people who don't speak English as well (you can see their complaints on CryptoDouble's facebook page); it is sad to see people being taken advantage of like that.
484  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][GEMZ]| SOCIAL MESSAGING APP THAT PAYS | Android App Released | on: January 14, 2015, 03:37:26 PM
Suggestion for the first page of this thread:
Use the official "available on Google Play" logo and you know make it sort of something like this:

That way its immediately clear that the app is available right now!
Its also made immediately clear that there is an image that people know and are familiar with.

Rather than searching on Google play for gems/gemz and not finding anything and then having to go through the whole front page and see the "app available now" section.

Just think it would be good to make it more accessible and more obvious where/how to get the app.

Thanks.

I agree. I also wonder if the wording for the app could better reflect what it is. The crypto currency element is hidden in the last line. I would say a focus on getting coins/money as a reward should be cleverer. Maybe you have to careful about pushing a crypto currency, I dunno, but it just looks like another messenger app to me.

Good point, the fact that it pays users to operate within the network is much bigger than it being fun and simple which mean that it should be highlighted more boldly in the description, preferably in the first line. It says 'Rewarding. Earn coins for introducing new users to the network' but coins can be interpreted differently. It should be money/get paid or something similar. People should know they get value in return, coin doesn't really reflect that imo.

I edited the dutch section. The Google play download logo should just be on the top of the page.

I forgot to add in my original post that this is also the case of the official website (getgems.org); there is no android logo anywhere and the website has still not been updated to reflect recent events.

I also found the section on the official website regarding the wallet extremely confusing; I eventually figured out it uses counterwallet for storage of coins. This is great, except that it is information that is not conveyed in an effective manner.

Again, these are just the thoughts of someone who is new to GEMZ--but I really think there needs to be better work on the communication. I don't believe I'm asking a lot, just at least put the available on android logo on the thread and official website--no one wants to read 5000 pages of boring mumbo jumbo when they hear the term "android app" and see screenshots, the first thing they want to do is download/install the app.

Also as another note the app doesn't make it immediately clear what your wallet address is--I think it'd be much better if it showed the address in text and we could then click to copy; hiding the address makes it seem like there is some extra hoop to jump to find it.

The wallet should really say something like "wallet on PC via counterwallet.io"; this way its clear to users who don't want to read mumbo jumbo how they can access their account from anywhere.

I wouldn't put so much thought into what an automated bot is buying/selling.

So basically no visible progress??

Am i the only one who thinks there is probably a guy out there laughing his ass off at how he used the same scam thrice ?
What do you mean the same scam thrice? What were the 2 first scams? I'm just wondering what is your proof of this?

Ah, there have been claims of torrent based coins that have taken BTC and run. Please keep in mind that I was interested in this project from the start and even tried to engage the dev in a technical discussion. He was vague and evasive, not at all confident that he could implement it.

Now after so long

1) No updates
2) No wallet with trading
3) No torrents
4) No real whitepaper
I do believe he indicated before that he'd only release features once he was confident they would work well. For instance the trading feature is supposed to come in the next beta.

In any case software development takes time--would you rather have a shitty torrent client with a buggy implementation or a great client with fantastic implementation?

EDIT: and really you're going to say
"Now after so long"
It's been two months since this was announced. Be patient.

Dear Hashop.io clients,
Due to Bitcoin difficulty growth, electricity cost and maintenance fee became higher then mining income. Hashop Team made a decision to convert all recent GH/s into Bitcoins at the market rate without any fees. Converted BTC were sent to your BTC wallet addresses automatically. Thank you all for staying with Hashop.io and hope to positively surprise you all with the updates in spring, 2015!
Contact support@hashop.io if you need any assistance.
Hashop.io Team.

I received a tiny payout from the front end a few days back (which never updated again) and then found this message on their website.

I guess to their credit I do have a refund to one of my addresses that appears to be from them but it hasn't been confirmed at this stage.

Thanks for the reply.

I had another question, is there a predetermined value/equivalency you intend for CCN? Say 1 gram/coin?

If you go back and read through my analysis of cryptocurrency regulation being developed right now in NY and D.C., you'll see that price-pegging in cryptocurrencies is likely going to be illegal for businesses that don't meet strict financial regulations and acquire Bit-Licenses.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=740903.msg9978657#msg9978657

The issue with price-pegging is that you are essentially marketing a currency as an asset-backed security when in fact it is not backed by any assets at all.  We are seeing how GAWminers is not able to back their XPY with $20 as they claimed they would, because they don't have the assets to do it.  They will likely face some serious consequences for operating what in retrospect was a type of Ponzi-scheme.

The major issue with price-pegging in the Cannabis industry is that you have many different grades of product that can weigh 1 Gram.  From the perspective of growers and manufacturers of products, this doesn't make sense whatsoever.

If someone wants to grow some Cannabis and essentially give it away to promote their cryptocurrency, that's their choice, but this doesn't make sense from the perspective of serious businesses because it is not a sustainable model.  There is nobody there to guarantee a buyer at those prices, and there is no guarantee that you will ever redeem your 1 Coin for 1 gram of Cannabis.

It is one thing to do a promotion on occasion to bring more people to your store and it is another thing to back your currency 100%.  If you don't back the value that you are claiming it has, then it simply isn't a price peg.

So a bunch of cryptocurrency traders in Europe, China, Russia, U.S. go buy your currency for 1 cent... then you give away a bunch of product and increase the value of your cryptocurrency on the hype... and then they sell on the price pump and you've made those cryptocurrency traders some money.  But how is that a sustainable model?

It would only be sustainable if you were issuing those coins directly for a realistic price, and for each coin that exists in the market, there is a corresponding product there to back its' value.  At that point, you have a centrally controlled cryptocurrency, which defeats the purpose of even creating a decentralized cryptocurrency in the first place.

Thanks for the reply; that clears up a lot of questions I have had with cryptocurrencies actually!

It happens in linux wallets, windows or both?

mac wallet is this safe to use  Huh

It is perfectly 'safe' in using any version of the client as long as you DO NOT encrypted your client or by keeping a working backup of the encrypted client (wallet.dat) before you create any new address every time.

This possible bug with the client is NOT RELATED to hacking of any sort, my best guess and what I am focusing now is that the bug could be related to how the client generate new address in an already encrypted client and possibly in some circumstances affected the wallet.dat file making it impossible to get the client to unlock even with the correct passphrase.

My first priority right now is to try to duplicate the issue and try to find the real cause of the bug.

I have tried to get in touch with xCash developer since their users is apparently also affected by the same 'possible bug' but still haven't heard back from him so far.

Thank you all for understand and support.

Can you please let us know the specific best way to back up and keep our wallets safe, i.e. just backing up wallet.dat?
494  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] Hashop.io - Bitcoin Cloud Mining. on: January 03, 2015, 06:51:43 AM
So far around 12 hours of no output on the website (it says I'm mining at 50GH/s) but I can't see anything 'technical' happening still.

the support ticket I send asking if I could change what I was mining remains unanswered.
495  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Cannacoin (CCN) | PoW->PoSV | No premine | No IPO - [MANDATORY UPDATE!] on: January 02, 2015, 01:58:22 PM

My only personal complaint on the cannacoin/cannabiscoin situation is that the names are way too similar and it just ends up being confusing for users.

I guess the better coin will win in the end, otherwise my investments in both will just mean more smoking material.

The reality is that blockchains are much more than just coins.  They are networks and must be sustained and developed over time through code.  These networks do not just die or win over another.  They are a sort of digital living entity...   We expect to continue modernizing the Cannacoin network for a long time to come to provide much more than just single application cryptocurrency.

I'm sure everyone wishes there was a simple way to solve this brand confusion -- and we have approached other communities with the intention to fix this but did not get any assistance... in fact, we've never met the core code developers from either Potcoin or CannabisCoin.

Maybe some day they will decide it is better to work together than to go it alone.  But we will not wait for them and will continue to develop platforms and work with other developers in the cryptocurrency space to explore innovative blockchain applications.

Everyday, we are building new relationships throughout the cryptocurrency development sphere and there is steady progress behind the scenes in applying these networks in the Cannabis industry.

Of course, we are also constantly analyzing regulatory compliance developments in both the cryptocurrency and Cannabis industry here in the United States, and our partners and investors are well aware of this!

Thanks for the reply.

ok I bit and got a $99 USD plan for 50GH/s for two years

so far it says its mining but there is no actual technical information that I could find. You also can't change what coin you're mining for (this is why I wanted this particular service), you can only mine bitcoin.

not sure what the point of withholding all the technical information is unless its really just a bitcoin mining service and not a processing power rental service (i.e. i can't choose which coin to back with it)

If/when I start getting paid I'll update this thread and post my experience.

now my account shows no currencies at all and doesn't show any successful transactions at all. so my data just disappeared then I suppose?

same

Did you try to hit refresh and see if you're logged in as a guest? They have a weird auto-logout feature that definitely needs to be tweaked.

tried that and was still logged in, even if i manually log out and then log back in I still get a blank list of balances and no transaction history.

An official crypto to buy weed?? Sure it sounds legit? Smiley

I though there was a "cannabis coin" already tho...

Who said anything about "official" ?  Nobody here has claimed "official".  You might be confused with Potcoin.

Also, Cannacoin was launched almost 1 month before CannabisCoin and we launched Cannacoin with a 0% premine and steady block rewards of 12.5 CCN for over 8 months before transitioning to PoSV.

If you are interested in joining a great community and project with serious software developers that have a long background in the Cannabis community in Washington State then I hope you get involved with us... we are usually available in Freenode IRC in the #cannacoin channel.

Thanks
