ASIC and pertinent IPOs will destroy this.

Wrong window/thread?  Grin

It's too early to launch a service with BTC as the only way of payment. To begin something new, you need to get the largest possible customer base, and few people have BTC today. Or do you have any reason to believe your business will be more appealing to BTC owners than non owners?

No, our users should be of quite normal distribution regarding to BTC.
183  Economy / Economics / Re: [POLL] Accept Bitcoins only? Please vote in the poll. on: August 14, 2013, 06:21:00 AM
If it's not related to bitcoin, why would you solely have the option to pay with bitcoin? Wouldn't that alienate your customers?

That is definitely one of the possible scenarios. It might be affected by the quality and price of our services and also by our competition. If we are not significantly better either in price or quality then they are likely to leave to our competition. On the other hand, if we are better, it might be an impulse for them to get into Bitcoin just because the need to pay for our services.

It would definitely alienate those customers who already read about Bitcoin and did not like it (or worse).

And by the end of the day it is of course about the numbers - would the number of customers willing to pay in Bitcoin only be enough to give us a solid paycheck? Would the Bitcoin only strategy encourage Bitcoiners to leave their current service providers and go with us just to support our effort? Or would they be reluctant to do so? Are today's Bitcoiners still more enthusiasts who believe in Bitcoin because of its principles or are they more of people who use Bitcoin solely because of its direct advantages (e.g. no fees)?

Of course that from strictly economical point of view, it is more likely that we earn more money if we provide as many payments methods as possible. But being one of the Bitcoin enthusiast I can risk a part of the income to support the idea. The question is whether it is a good way to do so and whether someone would even care.

for 80 BTC u can get 7 new blades and have 91 GH  Roll Eyes

Source? Afaik, you can not buy new blades now.
You can buy old blades having 1+ BTC / 1 GH but you have to buy extra things like coolers and do a setup yourself...

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=271054.0

10.25 per blade

OK, old blade, need to cool it down a lot if you want the max 12.8 GH, you will need to buy power suply, fans, ...

so are you sure you can go under 1 BTC/GH effectively (i.e. including everything)?

186  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Vote for Bitcoin to WHMCS on: August 13, 2013, 11:26:08 AM
We need something around 200 votes to get this implemented officially.
187  Economy / Economics / Re: Accept Bitcoins only? on: August 13, 2013, 07:00:52 AM
I'd say, use other payment methods as well, but give a discount or benefits to those that pay with bitcoins. That would probably promote bitcoin the best.

 Who is going to subsidies that discount? After all, if you can buy an car for a discount with bitcoins, who's
going to cover that spread?

In our particular case, this is possible since expenses are not directly connected to the services we offer. Expenses are mostly on vages, HW, hosting and a like, but providing a service to one more customer makes no difference. So we can do the discount like some people suggest.

In your car example case, you can always replace discount for Bitcoins with extra charge for non-Bitcoins. But of course, this might cause your customers go somewhere else where it is cheaper. This means that if you have strong competition on the market (i.e. you can not make difference in things like quality or support - think about selling Red Bulls), discount with Bitcoins implemented as an extra charge for non-Bitcoins would be much like Bitcoins only way - you will end with only Bitcoin customers.

So far the poll is slightly for having other methods + Bitcoin, but we would need much more votes to have it clearly.

189  Bitcoin / Project Development / Vote for Bitcoin to WHMCS on: August 12, 2013, 03:43:47 PM
If this is implemented by WHMCS we might see many business owners to get interested in what Bitcoin is and maybe then use it.

Feature request: https://requests.whmcs.com/responses/bitcoin-payment-module

Note: You have to register an account there to be able to vote.

We are working on an online project which is not related to the Bitcoin world in any way. So far we are offering free services to thousands of users every day, but within a couple of months we should introduce commercial services too. And I am thinking about this:

Would it be a good thing to go with Bitcoin ONLY for accepting payments for the commercial services? Would accepting Bitcoin and Bitcoin ONLY encourage Bitcoiners to go with us, or would they NOT care at all if we also implement PayPal and fiat methods?

Would it make a difference? If we want to support Bitcoin by accepting it, would accepting Bitcoin only be appreciated more by the community than just accepting it besides others?

What do you think?

Of course that we can start with Bitcoin and add PayPal later and thus effectively finding the answer ourselves later, but once we do PayPal, there is hardly how to take it back down.

if the auction is still open to bidding I would change my 2@3.7 with John to 7@3.7 with John

if not, I am keeping my 2@3.7 with John

koxman: Thank you for your offer but for BIN you need to bid 110 BTC or equivalent.

all: Forgot to mention fiat bids rules - fiat bids are converted to BTC using MtGox price + daily xe.com conversion at the time of auction end.
197  Economy / Auctions / [AUCTION] Selling Avalon Batch 2, stable 81GH+, hosting possible on: August 05, 2013, 08:57:33 AM
Hello everyone, after bidding mess in my previous auction (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=265272.0) I have decided to lock that one out and start a new one (no valid bids were there at the time of locking). This one should have rules defined better, so no mess should occur this time.

I would like to offer you my Avalon Batch #2 in this auction.

First of all, the counter:

Auction info:
  • starting price is 95 BTC
  • BIN is 110 BTC
  • minimum increment is 0.5 BTC
  • auction ends when the GIF counter above finishes, but every new bid prolongs the auction for 4 hours; BIN ends the auction only when if I confirm it, so keep bidding even if there is BIN offer
  • public bids are binding, no exceptions, you should bid ONLY IF YOU ARE 100 % SURE ABOUT THAT, if you win the auction with your bid and then you refuse to pay for whatever reason, you will get negative trust from me
  • PM bids allowed for BIN only
  • fiat bids accepted, but see below

Machine specification:
  • 3 module Avalon
  • original 850 Watt PSU
  • black design
  • running CKolivas 20130703 firmware
  • uptime of the machine (not cgminer) at this very moment is 19d 16h 20m 31s
  • cgminer does restart a few times a day, sometimes it is up for up to 48 hours, sometimes restarts after 2 hours, avg. number of restarts is 3-4 times a day - I have considered this not to be a great problem and thus did not try to solve this although there are plenty of tips inside Custom Hardware part of the forum on how more technical ppl can solve this completely
  • avg. hash rate with the current setup is over 81 GH/s
  • temperature is set to auto regulate to max 48C
  • runs overclocked on Frequency 345-350 MHz (auto)

Hosting info:
The machine is running in server housing AC room in Prague, Czech Republic, EU. Modules' temperatures are cca (+-1 C) 25C, 45C and 47C. It is possible for me to keep the machine in this hosting for the new owner, see pricing of this below.

Hosting pricing:
First 30 days are free of charge. Then the cost of every 30 days depends on the avg. MtGox USD/BTC rate of the first of those 30 days as follows:
  • 140 USD <= 1 BTC ....... 30 days hosting costs 1 BTC
  • 120 USD <= 1 BTC < 140 USD ....... 30 days hosting costs 1.25 BTC
  • 80 USD <= 1 BTC < 120 USD ....... 30 days hosting costs 1.75 BTC
  • 60 USD <= 1 BTC < 80 USD ....... 30 days hosting costs 2 BTC
  • 40 USD <= 1 BTC < 60 USD ....... 30 days hosting costs 2.5 BTC
  • 20 USD <= 1 BTC < 40 USD ....... 30 days hosting costs 4.25 BTC
  • 1 BTC < 20 USD ....... not available

These prices include everything and even changing the Avalon's configuration on demand, but in long term not more than 10 times per 30 days (just be sane please).

Delivery:
I very strongly suggest that the new owner picks up the machine personally from me in Czech Republic, Prague. This is the only way to prevent problems with delivery, damages etc. You can come with me to the server housing, see the machine working, see how I unplug it and put into the original box. You can take benefit of machine's hosting here. If you are not near Prague now, you might be in one, two or three months and have it hosted until then.

If you do not want to pick it up personally, international DHL shipping with insurance is available, but it is at your cost and you take the risk (small but non-zero) that the machine will be damaged during the delivery. Shipping cost is paid upfront directly even when escrow is selected.

Escrow:
Escrow is possible with John (John K.), who can also confirm that I have successfully made some trades using his escrow in the past. However, I prefer not to use the escrow, so I am offering a bonus for non-escrow bidders.

Escrow bidders will have to pay John's fee on their own. Escrow bidders with personal pick up will have to use PGP/GPG and during the personal pick up process, send a message to John that they have received the machine and that he can release the funds. Escrow bidders with DHL will have to agree that they take the risk of damage on themselves and sign PGP/GPG message to John confirming this. Our agreement will contain that John should release the funds when he receives an email with a scanned proof of finished delivery from me, or the buyer's confirmation that the unit was received, or when online DHL tracking system with confirmed tracking number will stay that the item was delivered.

Bonus for non-escrow bidders:
When the funds are received on my address 1F3ykymgyso4aDQ4isuAwhtT9iogxHvEzz with 6+ confirmations, the machine immediately works for you. You just tell me the configuration (which pools + credentials) and I will set it up ASAP and from that very moment it works for you. I strongly suggest that in this case we do this arrangement publicly and with a primary pool that has option for public to check the stats. Eligius is a good example. Remember, you have 30 days of hosting (from that very moment) free of charge.

Obviously, the biggest bonus is for BIN non-escrow bidder. You place the BIN, send me the private message asking for BIN confirmation, send the funds and in several hours the machine works for you.

The auction topic will remain open in order to allow us to make these agreements publicly.

Proof:
In order to prove that I do own this machine I have set it up a few days ago to mine on Eligius pool. You can see its stats here: http://eligius.st/~wizkid057/newstats/userstats.php/1F3ykymgyso4aDQ4isuAwhtT9iogxHvEzz . It is now back on 50btc pool, which I like the most, but the historical stats on Eligius are still available and are good enough for the proof of ownership.

In order for the proof to be complete it remains to sign a message with that address - i.e. prove that I do own it:
Address: 1F3ykymgyso4aDQ4isuAwhtT9iogxHvEzz
Message: Bitdude does own this address and his Avalon mines on Eligius.

OK, so we have no offers.

I see that it will probably be the best to close this topic and start a new auction with even more precisely defined rules.
199  Economy / Auctions / Re: Avalon B2 81GH+ with possible hosting on: August 04, 2013, 03:04:10 PM
Please note that I have switched to 50btc pool back again, I like that pool most. The proof of ownership has already been done with Eligius, the historical data will still be available there.

Next 36 hours I will not be available. So please be patient with your questions.
