4761  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Foundation to meet US authorities. on: August 27, 2013, 04:21:04 PM
I wonder what the government will say when they realise that the Bitcoin foundation are nothing more than a bunch of extremely pushy wannabe bureaucrats who don't know what the fuck they're talking about?

Feel right at home.  Bro hugs all around?

Not insignificant, but as I wrote, most of the weeks it would be hidden by the variation of the actual hash rate (glitches, problems, tests, etc).

Add on this that hardware sells also adds up to dividends in a variable way... it would be ridiculous to complain about a potential 14% variance, when the actual variance of dividends is much higher for different reasons.

Yes, over a week it is indeed not too important.
However, it would seem that it makes little sense to display 6 hour and 12 hour hash rate estimates on, e.g. http://www.asicminercharts.com/live/ . Even 24 hour estimates are quite unreliable: stddev of 26% assuming 10% network control, 37% assuming 5% control.

Or maybe the charts could be modified to include this standard deviation, so that the level of uncertainty can also be visualized?

I would think it would be trivial to include a standard deviation to the charts. A bar graph of 30Ths might benefit from a "+/- 2.43 Thz" disclaimer. If poll takers can do that, why can't we?

It would be trivial but then again you don't see a poll which says "52% +/- 45% approve (with 95% confidence interval)".  That is essentially the equivalent of the 6 hour stat.

and NOT on-time, or within spec! The boards came back with just over 1/2 the expected hashrate! You call that beaten? Haahahahahaha

On time, and hashing at 21 Gh/s, so they are sending the customer 42 Gh/s to make up for not getting the promised 25 Gh/s.  Sounds pretty damn fair to me...
as if they could deliver all August orders within 4 days, lol, and they are WAAAAAY over on Watts/Gh/s having to use DOUBLE!

Isn't double still less than KNC?
4764  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ixcoin TODO on: August 27, 2013, 09:09:33 AM
If I should buy a 400 GH/s Jupiter miner the profitability in mining Ixcoin will be something like 15 USD per month.
Considering it costs 7k USD, it would take 38 years to pay it out.

Something doesn't sound right to me .......even in case of merged mining.

Why would you consider only the profitability of ixcoin, if you are mining Bitcoins (and assuming your math is correct) merge mining ixcoin gives you a $180 free a year over just mining Bitcoin without any added expense.

So why wouldn't you?  You want to earn less on the same hardware and electricity?  You are afraid of mo money mo problems?  You have a cap on how much ROI% you are willing to accept and then will destroy your rig with a sledge hammer and mining ixcoin will  just make that day come sooner?
4765  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is the BTC network broken? on: August 27, 2013, 07:30:35 AM
These block times range from constipation to diarrhea... My understanding was 10 minute blocks?
What has happened?

Your understanding was wrong.  Bitcoin mining is random and follows a poisson distribution.  The AVERAGE time between blocks will be 10 minutes when the network is neither growing or shrinking.  The time between any two blocks is random.

What is the model number of the safe you bought? They have a lot of safes on that site you linked to.

Sent you a PM.

To which the attorney might ask "so, when did you order? October? And they were offering refunds no questions asked up until May or June? And despite all their missed targets, you never once requested a refund during the first 8 months that your order was outstanding? Only started demanding one after they had given notice that they wouldn't be providing refunds any longer?

None of that is relevant and no competent attorney would even allow that line of questioning to happen.  No sale has occurred because BFL has not delivered.  By the UCC they have no legal standing to refuse a refund on a contract they have failed to fulfill.   All "sales are final" is certainly legal but it requires a sale.

Quote
A "sale" consists in the passing of title from the seller to the buyer for a price (Section 2-401).

http://www.law.cornell.edu/ucc/2/2-106

For all orders which haven't shipped not sale has occurred.  It doesn't even really matter if BFL is in breach although their numerous false statements would make it likely the court would find them so.  It doesn't matter if BFL made those statements in good faith.  One can act in good faith and still be in breech of a contract.  Still the entire issue of a breach is moot as it relates to a refund as there is no "sale" only a "sale contract" and a sale contract can be ended by either party by termination even in the absence of a breech.

The fact that it would have been smart for customers to cancel before BFL violated contract law and prohibited that isn't really a defense.  It is stupid.  BFL has no defense but that doesn't mean a lawsuit is a smart idea.  In fact a lawsuit is a pretty stupid idea.  It will be expensive, time consuming and at best the plaintiffs could hope is to financially hurt BFL while not losing too much MORE money ("it will cost you more than it will cost me").  BFL could certainly (using the plaintiffs own money) drag it out so long that it won't see the inside of courtroom until late 2014.

Still there won't be a lawsuit.  Anyone who hasn't already contacted the FTC or Attorney General isn't going to file a lawsuit.  Filing a complaint with FTC or Attorney General costs exactly $0.00 and takes a few minutes.  If someone hasn't done that they aren't going to spends tens of thousands of dollars and take months for a lawsuit regardless of what they say on a forum.
4768  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Bitcoin Foundation should file a lawsuit against BFL on: August 27, 2013, 05:19:43 AM
Not only should the Bitcoin foundation not do this, they couldn't if they wanted.  There is a concept of standing in legal matters.  The Bitcoin foundation has suffered no damages, it has no standing to file suit.  Period.  It would be instantly throw out of court on motion and would make the Foundation a laughing stock in the legal community.
4769  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: LITTLE MISS ZIGZAG BTC FOR MONEY PACK AND OTHERS on: August 27, 2013, 03:43:19 AM
I will just leave this here.   For the record she might not be a scammer but you don't be the one to find out after the fact.  Never send funds first to a noob without escrow.

Alright, so I've been PM'd by a few people what red-flags to look out for since I have a pretty good track record of spotting scammers.  Sometimes I get it wrong, but better safe than sorry.  Anyway, watch out for the typical behavior from scammers who will usually fit at least two or three (and sometimes even more) of the following characteristics:

0. Newbies, NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH OTHER NEWBIES, EVER. There are plenty of veteran members to do business with and ALWAYS use escrow. If you're a newbie and you're doing business with another newbie, there's a 100% chance that you will get scammed (or you're a scammer yourself).
1. New account (usually created within the last 3 months, plus or minus)
2. Low-medium message count with vapid posts of little to no contributory value
3. Use of a seemingly realistic first/last name as their forum account name
4. Signs posts with full name
5. Straight out of Newbie mode right into Lending (requesting a loan of course)
6. Straight out of Newbie mode right into Currency Exchange (PayPal, Liberty Reserve, Western Union)
7. Straight out of Newbie mode and selling gift cards/codes/Steam games of any kind
(they'll often be purchased with stolen CC info, leaving you holding the bag later on down the road)
8. Any user blatantly claiming to be female
9. New user trying to sell an Apple iAnything
10. Sob stories asking for handouts
11. Scammers will try to scam you out of amounts as little as BTC.001 or even less. Do not think that just because the requested amount is trivial that it's any more legit than a 1000 BTC loan request.

There.  Pretty much in a nutshell how to spot a scammer.  There's still some finesse to spotting a scammer, but these rules will separate most of the wheat from the chaff, so to speak.  Oh, and I guess there's one more rule:

12. NEVER DO BACKROOM DEALS VIA PM WITH NEW USERS. Make sure all deals are negotiated in the open forum for both public record and peer review.

Examples of posts that fit the scammer pattern:

TLDR: Be careful before you freely give away your coins. From the evidence collected here, you stand substantial chance of getting ripped off if lending to someone who fits the scammer profile.  If that chance is worth making an extra 1-10% on your money, I can't stop you.

they can't tell you since they are all behind bars Wink

The origonal conversation stemmed from different utility companies sharing/not sharing grounds, so if your cable internet isn't sharing pole grounds on the way to your home, and gets hit by lightning instead of the POWER line, which IS grounded on every pole, it would indeed lessen the risk of lightning strike spike from the internet line, stopping at the wifi, instead of in your miner.

Yeah it is all about reducing risk.  No surge protector is lightning proof.  A direct lightning strike is beyond the capability of any surge protector. Ohms law and all that.  With circuits in parallel the relative current through each circuit is the inverse of the relative resistance of each circuit.   Surge protectors work by creating multiple low resistance circuits to the ground (which only exist at high voltage).  With multiple circuits and much lower resistance, due to Ohms law most of the current flows there.  The key word is "most".  Most is never 100% (that would require perfectly zero resistance to ground).  The problem is in a direct strike we are talking about 100 kA (100,000 amps) so most is not going to be good enough.  Without any attenuation due to miles of wire the full current slams into the surge protector, and even if it does an amazing job and shuts away 99.99% of the current , 0.1% is still over 100 amps.  That is smoke city.

Buy a surge protector but it is not a magic bullet.

TL/DR: Direct lightning strike = equipment dies.  End stop.

You know,  my biggest issue still stands after all this dick waveing.  If this is legitimate,  if this truely gives a user a cheaper trackable parcel. Then this should be given to the community. If it allows people to safely trade overseas why try to milk $3 out of everyone.

I provided an alternative answer upthread.

Step 1) Use USPS website (or any click to ship service).
Step 2) Select first class international shipping
Step 3) Ship to one of the 14 countries which provide delivery confirmation (not anywhere in the world that is incorrect).

Get free e-delcon.  No secret or trick needed.

yes IF the miner is designed for it.

What do you mean designed for it?  As far as the miner is concerned it is Ethernet.  Nothing special that it has to be designed for.  The miner has no idea (nor does it care) that downstream packets are traveling over a wireless link, a copper link, a sonar link, a tin can link, or smoke signal link.  It sends Ethernet (100BaseTX) packets and gets back Ethernet packets.  That is the whole point.
Hmm, after a momentary lapse of reason... I think you'r absolutely correct.. If it can navigate to the web on an RJ45 connection, it shouldn't care if there is a wireless connection downstream or not.
So, with that in mind, I think we'll need a wifi router on each side? The cable/internet provider gives you one with the service, which doesnt care what wifi device is connecting, but in our case, it will be another wifi router, hardwired to the miner, instead of a dongle or built in wifi...
Am I on the same page now?

I think so but the way you worded it I am not sure.  Assuming the user already has a wifi router (and who doesn't) they just need to buy a bridge router and then they can plug their miner into that.

A thief however can still dispute they never made the charge.  "It wasn't me, I have no idea who this Bitcoin hacker guy is, or how he stole my money but I never made these transfers. Please Mr. Bank Customer support person they stole all my money I can't pay the rent unless I get this back".

I would imagine this scenario would only work once per bank account.  After that, the bank would be onto the scammer's MO.  The 2nd and subsequent claims by a person doing this scam from their own account would be treated with extreme suspicion by their bank.  It would have to be a decent amount of money to be worth burning one's own reputation with their bank to try this scam.

Not everything is a grand criminal enterprise.  Most crimes are just a crime of opportunity "Oh look I can get a $1200 in free money using a computer. Sweet."   I mean lets put this into perspective.  Not everyone is Bernie Madoff.  Plenty of people have died in muggings gone wrong for a LOT less than $1,200.  Think any criminal goes into an armed robbery saying "I am going to kill this guy but the chance of 25 to life is totally worth a iphone, a couple of credit cards and a couple bucks in cash".  Nobody is burning their rep with the bank, the bank gives two craps.

I also find it amazing that there are many legitimately 'hacked' bank accounts in Canada.  I've been using online banking for years in Canada with no problems. I would think their security would be heavy duty.  I know if someone hacked my account and tried to do an Interac e-Transfer out, I'd get a phone call from my bank.

Do you get a phone call on every e-transfer?  The point of hacking is to impersonate the genuine user.  Any transfer the bank doesn't call you on could be a transfer by someone else using your account fraudulently and you wouldn't know until after the fact. What would you do?  Oh yeah call the bank and report that you didn't authorize that transaction.   Still you are right most of these types of transactions aren't genuinely compromised accounts, they are the account holder (or cardholder for CC) simply lying.  The bank doesn't really care though, it was never their money at risk.  Who cares if a merchant takes a hit?  You don't honestly think the bank does? They just want to resolve the dispute as quickly and more importantly cheaply as possible.

This steel hardware wallet is like software wallet encrypted with 56-bit DES. It is crackable by brute force in reasonable time.

If this safe would be 256-bit AES encrypted the monolithic steel walls would be thicker than diameter of Milky Way galaxy.

Good analogy.

I never said it wasn't real, I have no reason to doubt (or care) that the money order is real.  I said you can't PROVE it is real.  It is possible for both statements to be true at the same time.

The situation:
a) the money order is real (will not be returned).
b) you can not prove the money order is real (it will not be returned).
c) the only way to prove the money is real (will not be returned) is to deposit it and wait.
d) CampBX should clearly indicate how long they will hold client checks.

Likewise:
a) the Bitcoin transaction is valid (won't be double spent)
b) you can't prove the Bitcoin transaction is valid (won't be double spent)
c) the only way to prove the Bitcoin transaction is valid (won't be double spent) is to include it in a block and wait.
d) Merchants should clearly indicate how many confirmations they will require.

I haven't attacked you.  I even said CampBX is 100% wrong for not making their deposit terms clear.  CampBX should explicitly state in unambiguous terms how many business days it will take before funds are credited to a client's account after depositing a check received by the client.  If you see everything as an attack maybe that is the problem.

Nice.  I would bid on that.  Would need some better pics to judge its condition.  Assumming it is frame worthy it would be a pretty cool piece of memorabilia.

This will help you compare the options.

http://www.coinchoose.com/litecoin.php

Remember it is constantly changing as difficulty and prices change.  Litecoin is the king of the alt-coins (which doesn't mean much IMHO) nobody else is even close.  Understand alt-coin markets are often thin and pumped.  Just because coinchoose says xyz Coin is 200% the return of LTC it doesn't mean you will get 200% unless you can mine at the rate it assumes (not too many orphans) and the market is deep enough to buy all your coins without the price slipping.

Go in with your eyes wide open.  If Bitcoin is the wild west the alt-coins are a penal island where anything goes.
4780  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Keyur @ CampBX has gone rogue!! LAWSUIT, ARREST AND CRIMINAL CHARGES ON HORIZON on: August 26, 2013, 11:01:04 PM
I got ya, I was just putting it out there that I could prove it was real.

That is the problem.  You CAN'T prove it is real.  The only proof if depositing the check and waiting 5 business days.  There is no other proof the MO/check won't be returned.

Still CampBX is at fault for not clearing (as in in black and white unambiguous statements) specifying when the funds will be credited to the account.  Nobody is going to credit same day MO (or they won't be in business long) but customers should know going in that it is going to take 2-3 business days for the check to arrive and another five business days for the check to clear.
