what is it?

It was an attempt to double-spend (or to post a non-serial unit, to be accurate).

The flight oracle is run by tonych so there is too much incentive for him not to lie, and he has very much already earned street cred.

Most oracles should not be anonymous though, unless you think shady deals.

How reliable is this oracle? If it doesn't report the information in time, can we see that it indeed has crashed and hasn't been just switched off to not report the outcome which would lead to money loss for its operator? Without reliability usage of such oracle is like playing in online casino which can say "Oops, we can't decide if you have won or lost" any time when you would win.

oracle should have some secure deposit based on game theory.

Oracles (same as witnesses) are non-anonymous and they stand to lose something in case they misbehave.  This can be called a form of security deposit.

The flight oracle is run by tonych

How can I make sure of this? Anybody can download oracle code from github, modify it to feed a crappy data and run. How can I connect oracle address with RL identity?

This oracle GFK3RDAPQLLNCMQEVGGD2KCPZTLSG3HN  is one of the witnesses that I run, you can find this address in your wallet and in every tx on explorer.

Dear hodlers,

The time has come to put your bytes into real use.

We are launching P2P insurance on smart contracts https://medium.com/byteball/making-p2p-great-again-episode-iv-p2p-insurance-cbbd1e59d527.

Starting today, you can use your bytes to buy or sell insurance against flight delay.
Some of you might be going to fly in the near future.  Buy insurance from peers and get paid if your flight is delayed.
If you are selling insurance, you have opportunity to make a profit, thus earning interest on your holdings (with correct risk management, of course!).

Before buying/selling, learn stats about your flight to estimate the probability of delay and decide how much you are willing to pay (if buying) or ask (if selling).  Some useful resources:
http://www.flightstats.com
http://flightaware.com/
https://www.flightradar24.com

Then post your offer in #p2p_insurance channel on our slack.

I'm going to fly to Dalaman (Turkey) via Istambul, and to get this market going, I ask you to insure my flights:
TK420 on Apr 30
TK2554 on Apr 30
TK2561 on May 9
TK413 on May 10

I'm willing to pay 10% for insurance against delay of 15 minutes or more, or 5% for insurance against delay of 30 minutes or more (I didn't actually research the stats and don't know how fair these premiums are, but a disbalance of supply and demand will tell me if I'm wrong).  Each flight is a separate contract, and I'll be more than happy to buy from different sellers.

Sorry for frequent upgrades, a new bug popped up yesterday and is fixed now, please update if you are running a full client https://github.com/byteball/byteball/releases.

It was a validation error that needs to be fixed in two steps to minimize disruption.  This is step 1, step 2 will follow after most full nodes upgrade.

Also since this release, the node automatically clears old log data to save some space (thanks @portabella!).

The update is mandatory for all full nodes (both GUI and headless).

My Byteball app would crash whenever I tried to do a full backup, so instead I am backing up the folder in the user local folder manually. This seems to include all the chain / DAG, etc...

There isn't anything else I need to backup that I should be aware of is there?

Full backup stopped working in full clients after the database got too large, we are working on a fix.  For now, you are doing right that you are backing up the data folder manually.

Version 1.8.1 released https://github.com/byteball/byteball/releases.

This is a bugfix release.
* Fixed a rare validation error that could cause a crash
* Fixed handling of responses from malfunctioning peers, this could cause sync to stall
* Fixed a crash when starting a light client for the first time
* Fixed a crash when opening chat on some old Android phones
* Other small bugfixes and improvements

I was playing with the chat function (multidevice wallet (2 of 3) two devices @byteball.fr/bb -and replaced witness).
For every paired device itís possible to change the chat hub independent (on both sides)
The global preferences (setting) does not affect the chat setting.
This allows a lot of combinations.
If both device used global   byteball.fr/bb and both devices used i.e. byteball.org/bb as chat hub. Chat does not work.
Maybe there are other invalid combinations which will not work.. Maybe this is an esoteric problem, but it can be lead very confusing  Huh..

The hub setting under global preferences is the hub where you receive messages.  Your peers use it to send messages to you.
The hub setting under Chat/Edit is the hub where your peer receives messages.  Your wallet uses it when you message the peer.  Usually you don't need to change it manually unless you learn from the peer through other channels that he changed the hub.

I've been told that our Android app can connect through TOR, despite what I previously believed.  And it is quite easy to set up.

1. Install Orbot https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.torproject.android

2. Start Orbot, enter the left menu, and enable Apps VPN Mode.  You will be presented the list of apps, tick the checkbox next to Byteball.

The next time you start Byteball app, itíll connect through TOR.

This forum post will not be easy to find, I put up the how-to on Medium: https://medium.com/byteball-help/how-to-enable-tor-in-byteball-android-app-38cb1605a51d

Version 1.8.0 released https://github.com/byteball/byteball/releases

In this release:

1. Option to save chat history. It is done in the most privacy-centric way: chat history is saved only if both parties agree, and the setting can be changed in the middle of the conversation.  If at least one of the parties doesn't want the history to be saved, it is discarded when the app is closed (of course it can still be saved manually by copying and pasting).

2. Push notifications for chats / received payments on Android.  What's important, even alternative hubs can send push notifications, which makes us even better decentralized than Signal.  Alternative hub operators, please follow instructions at https://github.com/byteball/byteball-hub#push-notifications-for-android to enable push for your clients.

3. Ability to remove chat correspondents unless they are part of a multisig address or smart contract (thanks @vakar!)

4. Improved French and Portuguese translations

5. Fixed a validation bug that caused crashes while syncing for many users.

Because of the above bugfix, upgrade is mandatory for all full clients.

I am happy to say that 2 of 5 above items were contributed by community members.

Can anybody help me pls?  Undecided

First everything worked well, but the syncing needed 15+ hours so meanwhile i tried to install a second time to start the lightwallet. After that, suddenly nothing worked anymore. I tried to install and uninstall several times, but suddenly i always get this error after a few seconds:

Uncaught exception: Error: known bad
...... (many letters and numbers)
authentifier verification failed

I use:
macOS Sierra 10.12.4

Thanks!

Schnidl
Try pointing your wallet to byteball.fr/bb (in wallet settings/hub)

is that better than default hub?

It is an alternative hub (peered to default). The error means your default hub is down or too busy.

I'm having the same error (using 1.7.1), even after I changed the hub, any idea?

1.8.0 is coming soon, it'll fix the issue.

Hello
I have this message when i try to send blackbytes through chat to another wallet:

"Impossible to send payment
conflicting spend proof in inner unit"

Even with version 1.7, the problem still exist.

Thank you if you have somme help!
I will reward the first who will help me to solve this issue with 24 GBB (~ $100).

The error means you were trying to double-spend.
This might happen if you are running the same wallet (same seed) on more than one device.

Here it is: I have made a copy of the wallet on another device and deleted this wallet everywhere else.
But I still get the same message.

Thank you

If you deleted the clones _after_ this error, it shouldn't help.  You can spend blackbytes only from the device that was most recent to send a blackbytes transaction.

Well, it's hard not to see DAG in Byteball design.

It's also seen in Ethereum design, any idea why they call themselves "chain", not "DAG"?

Ask them.  Perhaps they started from a chain and allowed for a DAG in some cases to accommodate for some need.

- GHOST protocol gives a similar topology of blocks and if we have only 1 transaction per block then there is no difference in first order approximation.
And what?  Of course, there are edge cases.  And I didn't invent DAG if you want me to admit that Smiley

- The whitepaper tells about ordering and the main chain.

And?

I just mentioned things which point toward "chain", not "DAG".

They are not mutually exclusive.
If you want to make some point, make it.

- There is no publicly available information on transactions topology in high TPS mode (this would show if Byteball utilizes high scalability granted by a DAG).

Any reasons to believe the topology will be in some way "wrong" in high TPS mode?

Yes. I suspect the ordering will slow everything down significantly. Is it hard to run a test?

It might slow down or might not.  What I know for sure, the current implementation leaves a lot of room for optimization.  But it is not my primary concern at the moment, all these TPS should be useful for something, and I pay most attention to the demand side rather than the supply.

I saw these pictures 2 or 3 times before but it's still unclear what you want to know?

Why Byteball is a DAG-coin, not a chain-coin.

First DAG coin

This reminded me about

I'm still not convinced that Byteball is a pure DAG coin, to prove my position I would need to generate a lot of transactions on Byteball network to show that in certain conditions (related to DAG topology) TPS growth is negatively impacted by necessity to pick the main chain. If you compared Ethereum (which calls itself blockchain) and Byteball you would see that they don't differ much:

If you looked at IOTA you would see this:

I'm not interested enough to make sure that my assumption is correct, but you could help by generating a lot of transactions and posting here the topology of the resulting Byteball DAG. Try 10 TPS on the testnet maybe?

Not sure if tonych thinks that I'm trolling so he ignores the question or he doesn't feel himself comfortable to be involved into a dispute regarding that issue. Anyway, a run on testnet would give some ballpark numbers on Byteball scalability potential thus giving 50% of the answer.

I saw these pictures 2 or 3 times before but it's still unclear what you want to know?

@tonych

The initial_witnesses array is used only when your hub starts for the first time.

It seems complicated to have witnesses diversity to emerge unless some major industry player claims he is running a witness and asks for adoption. Although the project adoption looks going well it may take some time for this to come.

In the meantime, I beleive we should start to show that the network relies on community independant operated witnesses for at least a portion of the 12 default list (my personnal opinion is 6 over 12).

On the project side: I think it is really important for the mass adoption that independant witnesses now show up (would later be spontaneously replaced by thoses of notorious captain of industry when they come in) to guarantee witnessing diversity.

On the candidate witness side: unless validating, candidate witnesses are just bleeding byte. It comes, soon or later, quite frustrating and leads to discouraging skilled volunteers.

As you know, together with a hub service to the community, I am operating a witness at MEJGDND55XNON7UU3ZKERJIZMMXJTVCV

Would you agree on setting up this witness as a default in byteball.org/bb and in the conf.js files on Github as a first step to diversity? (I personnaly choosed to replace the 12th one starting by UENJ)

Please take a couple of minutes to think about it.

It is great that you are getting expertise running nodes, but we need well-known trusted people/orgs as witnesses.

There is no such requirement for running hubs, and I'm happy to see the hub network decentralized.

Maybe someone knows what this error is and how to fix it?
This is witness:
1)
Witnessing failed: not enough spendable funds from KEKYWT35NDA7LA7M23JTXTEZW2U7242I for 488
2)
Witnessing problem: only 0 spendable outputs left, and can not add more

I get this on the mail set in the settings of conf.json

Throw some money into KEKYWT35NDA7LA7M23JTXTEZW2U7242I.
258  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: BYTEBALL: Totally new consensus algorithm + private untraceable payments on: April 13, 2017, 02:56:16 PM
Clear it is so. Does it mean that BB hub runs on teddyid server?

Yes, they are on the same server.
259  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: BYTEBALL: Totally new consensus algorithm + private untraceable payments on: April 13, 2017, 02:17:22 PM
@tonych,  client is always  connecting to mail.teddyid.com. What is it for?

I guess it is your software (that produced this image) is trying to reverse DNS the default hub's IP address:
byteball.org: 144.76.217.155
mail2.teddyid.com: 144.76.217.155
260  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: BYTEBALL: Totally new consensus algorithm + private untraceable payments on: April 13, 2017, 11:31:57 AM
I updated the OP to include the list of alternative hubs:
byteball.fr/bb
byteroll.com/bb
Let me know if there are more hubs.
