2  Bitcoin / Legal / US lawyers float Facebook Credits antitrust suit on: February 27, 2012, 10:36:35 PM
Any Facebook game developers on here looking to force Facebook to allow Bitcoin?

--

US attorneys are trying to drum up interest in a potential case against Facebook, claiming its Credits virtual currency is breaking US antitrust law.

The firm, Newman DuWors, has thrown up the site Stopfacebookcredits.com to attract game developers and providers of virtual currencies who believe their businesses have been or are being damaged by Facebook Credits.

Newman DuWors hopes to bring either a single or a class-action against Facebook under the US Sherman Act that saw Microsoft prosecuted during the 1990s. Derek Newman with the firm told The Reg on Monday that he hopes somebody who’s been put out of business by Facebook Credits will come forward who he can represent.

3  Economy / Economics / New Anti-Money Laundering Rules Apply to Gift Cards on: February 11, 2012, 06:06:54 AM

Wonder when Bitcoin transactions will have to be reported to FinCEN.

--

If you issue gift cards to customers, you may subject to new anti-money laundering rules issued by Treasury agency FinCEN.

“The law enforcement agencies that report to FinCEN have highlighted the use of gift cards in money laundering for some time,” JVC president and CEO Cecilia Gardner tells JCK.

The new rules, which go into effect on March 31, require retailers who issue store cards for $2,000 or more to take precautions to ensure these products are not being used to launder money. These precautions include gathering customer identification information, maintaining records of the transactions, and implementing an anti-money laundering program.

The rules also apply to retailers whose cards can be used in outside stores, of if they issue cards to a customer in the amount of $10,000 or more in one day.

Retailers who issue gift cards in the amount of $2,000 or less do not have to comply, unless this card can be used internationally or reloaded remotely.

Retailers must also report any suspicious activity using an IRS form called a “Suspicious Activity Report.”

4  Economy / Economics / FATCA & BITCOIN (The Financial Berlin Wall) on: January 09, 2012, 08:59:24 PM
Over the next few years the United States FATCA ( Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act ) will take full affect and declared and undeclared wealth will be looking for a place to hide, one of those places is going to be Bitcoin.

This law not only governs U.S. persons with foreign bank accounts but non-us residents with cash in U.S. banks.

Many U.S. persons are already starting to lose their banks accounts in foreign countries as foreign banks do not want to deal with the compliance issues of reporting these accounts to the U.S. IRS.

As the financial Berlin Wall goes up, the first people to be affected will be the high net worth individuals as they have a lot of cash to move around and will have the least sympathy because of their wealth, then over time it will affect everyone.

How this plays out I do not know, but it's something people here should be thinking about if they are not already.
