Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Signed Binaries

It's been over a year since this thread was touched. I was just looking at my system with Process Explorer and out of the 62 processes, only 3 are not signed. One of them is Bitcoin-qt. Is there any downside to signing? I always verify with Gavin's signature and I trust that keychain more than I would one issued by a centralized authority... We all know what has happened to SSL CAs. Is this the argument?

(the people are wonderful and detest their government, my friend had gotten a visa to move to the US which is why I decided to finally visit; it was now or never).
From one oppressive government to another... at least he is used to hating his government, he'll fit in well here I know, I was thinking the same thing. Our government is oppressive in different ways which are less obvious to many people though. In Iran it is very overt. Although I would say it is pretty out in the open here too... But yea, everywhere people have ways of getting around the laws. I don't think Tor was working well but we had a VPN. And of course the girls to some extent violate the dress code, everyone has illegal satellite TV, etc.

Also you can run it through Tor (now there is even Tor service support). It would be cool if the protocol were eventually obfuscated in a way similar to the recent research makes Tor look like Skype video calls. Given that the blockchain is public the best would be to use a mixing service (I think there is research into better types of mixing services but I'm not too familiar with them), or something like OpenTransactions which would allow for an anonymous digital cash "on top of" Bitcoin.

I was in Iran two months ago visiting a friend. It was an absolutely amazing time (the people are wonderful and detest their government, my friend had gotten a visa to move to the US which is why I decided to finally visit; it was now or never). When I was there it was 20,000 Rial to the dollar - a few weeks prior I believe it had been 12,000. Right now it is almost 25,000. So Iran is experiencing massive inflation. Probably as a result of EU oil sanctions. BTW if you look up Rial prices online you have to make sure to get the actual street rate - I believe there are 3 different exchange rates and only the worst one is what normal people can actually get. Anyway, a great reason for Bitcoin to take hold in Iran. I sort of wanted to try running the client there but didn't want to get my friend in trouble It was rather ironic - we had a WiMax connection but it was severely rate limited!

Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Warn when transaction fee might be higher due to block chain out of sync
|
on: September 23, 2012, 02:04:25 AM
|
I was going to send a transaction but the it was too large and my client (0.7.0) wanted me to pay a fee. However, I was not fully synchronized with the blockchain yet. The client knew this. I waited a few more blocks and sent the transaction without having to pay the fee. The message asking me to pay a fee didn't mention the blockchain not being synchronized. Users who are unaware of how fees are calculated could have paid an unnecessary fee to the network had they accepted prior to the client knowing that there was a way to send coins w/o the fee. Perhaps the error message could be modified to reflect this? Edit: Opened an issue here https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/issues/1858

Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Poll - What kind of miner are you?
|
on: September 21, 2012, 03:37:27 PM

Mining with 7 5870s at 400Mhash each for a total of 2.8Ghash. Average hashrate in last 10 rounds: 2805 Mhash/s Been doing this for awhile but for a long time I wasn't at full capacity due to broken fans and things which had to be fixed. General cooling issues for instance (I have 2 cards running outside now). Now that the difficulty is high I am at full capacity since I had the motivation to fix the issues. I wonder how many others have done the same. I could probably overclock a bit but then stability becomes an issue... We used to have 8 cards but last summer the kill scripts weren't so great so one melted. Also have broken 2 A/Cs along the way... So does that make us small? I want to be a medium sized miner!!

Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [1800 GH/s] Slush's Pool (mining.bitcoin.cz); STRATUM=ASIC ready, low stales

Hi Slush,
Can you tell us more about the democratic mining you propose? Would that give miners the ability to select which transactions go into a block?
Re: "I already have some ideas for Stratum mining protocol extension, where miners will be able to suggest their own merkle branch (I call it internally “democratic mining”), which will solve such issues as centralized selection of transactions. For now I decided to focus on such a solution, which will fit to majority of miners and do some extensions later."
Thanks!

Bitcoin / Mining / Block 200,000 will be mined this weekend

Get ready to party Not a critical test like 210,000 but certainly a milestone. Block 100,000 was mined on 2010-12-29 11:57:43. Back then difficulty was 14,484. We are nearing 3,000,000 now.

Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Why are people afraid of pool fees?
|
on: September 18, 2012, 03:06:02 PM

I don't get it?? In the newbie forum most especially, pools without fees are preferred over those that take back a small fee.
Here's how I see it: Pools with fees are more reliable in the long run because they have some extra funding to keep their services up and running. Ones which do not incur such fees don't seem to have this safety net.
Am I missing something?
Yes you are missing things like p2pool No fee and it's much much better and safer than any other pool. Fees to keep the service up and running? You keep p2pool up and running I've been wondering why p2pool isn't more popular. Have people just not made the switch yet?

We are on a tornado watch at the moment but so far so good! As long as the tarp isn't blown over the rig won't be destroyed... Extreme mining.
