61  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: What's taking so long for my payment? on: June 09, 2011, 06:25:29 PM
Dwolla changed their API recently without warning mt gox first. Things should be working as normal again once mt gox is set up to use the new API.
62  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: bit coin address changing? on: June 09, 2011, 04:14:35 PM
There is another reason for using different addresses for each transaction. It helps keep track of where the bitcoins came from. If you give each person you deal with a different address then you can tell who sent you money by looking at which address it went to.
63  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Threshold for tx fee? on: June 08, 2011, 06:46:49 PM
Transaction fees are not based on the amount of BTC sent, except in the case of very small amounts to prevent transaction spam. If you received the bitcoins you are trying to send from a lot of small transactions you may need to pay a fee since that creates a larger amount of data for the network to handle. Also if you have very recently received the bitcoins you may have to pay a fee again to prevent spam.

64  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Tell us why you sold your Bitcoins on: June 08, 2011, 03:34:33 PM
I sold a few on Saturday at 17 to get back some money spent on mining hardware.
65  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How can I check my wallet balance without using the wallet.dat file? on: June 08, 2011, 02:20:41 AM
If you only have 1 copy it is not backed up. Always have at least 2 copies of any wallet and keep them in different places.
66  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Does Mt. Gox have enough cash on hand to cover massive USD withdrawals? on: June 08, 2011, 02:14:08 AM
Mt.Gox does not buy bitcoin it just facilitates trades between people. Considering how much he is making on the per trade fee, I doubt he would risk that by messing around with the deposits.
67  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is MtGox inflating the bubble? on: June 08, 2011, 12:13:47 AM
( idk why they don't take cc? )

Too many problems with credit card charge backs
68  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is MtGox inflating the bubble? on: June 07, 2011, 11:22:26 PM
You can sell as many bitcoins as you want in a day so I don't think the speed of getting funds out of Mt.Gox has much effect.

There could be some small effect. Those who wanted to sell bitcoins in order to pay for something expensive, but still expected prices to go up, would sell at most $1kUSD a day. Also if someone changed their mind and decided to buy back some bitcoins part of their funds might still be on Mt.Gox due to them not being able to withdraw it all at once.
69  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Don't talk about Bitcoins! (Bitcoin Establishment Plan) on: June 07, 2011, 07:32:10 PM
First I opened this thread expecting to find someone who was trying to hold down the price while their money got to Mt.Gox, I was pleasantly surprised.

Secondly the cat is out of the bag on bitcoin, I don't think anyone can significantly slow the spread of the information now.

Lastly I don't think a price crash would destroy bitcoin, as long as the technology is sound people can pick up the pieces and build the bitcoin economy you want to see created. This would take place at a much slower pace then we are currently seeing but I don't see any reason why it couldn't happen.
70  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Static or Reducing Difficulty, Panic? on: June 07, 2011, 04:36:21 PM
Part of the problem with difficulty growth at the moment is a lack of availability on the top end AMD GPUs. I'm not sure if miners bought the majority of those high end cards or if they were just the straw that broke the camels back. Either way the lack of any for purchase is slowing network power growth.
71  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How is it possible that a wallet backed up before a transaction occurs. . . on: June 07, 2011, 04:27:01 PM
By default, the wallet creates 100 keys as a buffer (not sure if it's a rolling buffer, you'd have to ask Gavin or someone).

So you have 100 different addresses to pick from with a fresh wallet backup before you need to backup again.

So yes, use only one address and you'll never need to backup again.

One thing to note is that the 100 buffer keys do not start getting generated until you create your second address. Even then it takes awhile for all of them to be generated.

0.3.22 might have changed that but someone got burned by expecting the 100 extra addresses and finding out they did not have them in the wallet backup they made.
72  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin exceeds searches on Google vs "Silver Price" on: June 06, 2011, 11:33:06 PM
Hate to burst your bubble but it looks like that is just because primarily people speaking english search for "silver" but people search for bitcoin no mater what their language.
73  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bwtween 17-18 dollars the last several days on: June 06, 2011, 10:40:04 PM
Yes this is the normal "Oh Shit what's gonna happen next phase"
74  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Can't Reconfirm My Transactions! on: June 06, 2011, 03:22:50 PM
Try running bitcoin with the -rescan option. If you are not familiar with the command line then do the following.

Go to the folder that contains bitcoin.exe

Create a new .txt file

Type "bitcoin.exe -rescan" without quotes

Rename the .txt file to somthing.bat

Double click the .bat file

This will cause bitcoin to go back through the block chain looking for transactions belonging to addresses in your wallet.
75  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: 2 Computers 1 Wallet on: June 06, 2011, 07:31:21 AM
A wallet in use in two places can't damage the network. Its is more likely to confuse than break the wallet. You would have access to all your bitcoins between the two copies. Telling exactly how many bitcoins you had would be difficult though since there would be a partial overlap between the two.

If transactions were sent from both computers around the same time you might end up trying to send the same bitcoins to two different people. The block chain would sort that out and one of the people would get their coins and the other would not. At that point one of the two would be rather annoyed with you much as if you had given them a bad check.

If something worse did go wrong though I won't be sending you any bitcoins to cover the loss so I would not recommend trying it out.
76  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Looks like someone is hiring coders to develop a competitor for Bitcoin on: June 06, 2011, 07:18:05 AM
I think the biggest advantage bitcoin has over any company developed competitor is that it can wait as long as it takes to succeed. A company would have a limited time to succeed.
77  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: how long to transfer coins directly from the client? on: June 06, 2011, 06:18:40 AM
You can wait as long as you want. Its the credentials for spending your coins that are stored on your computer not the coins them self.

Well the coins are stored on your computer but also every other computer with a copy of the block chain.
78  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: 2 Computers 1 Wallet on: June 06, 2011, 05:32:51 AM
As you use the bitcoin software you create new addresses, once you ran through the pregenerated addresses you would end up with a different balance on each computer as the wallets diverged.

There might be additional strange behavior from the software as well.

You can copy the wallet file back and forth between 2 computers as long as you are only using it in one location at a time and make sure you use the latest copy.
79  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Ultimate Newbie Question on: June 06, 2011, 04:54:45 AM
When I sent money to Mt Gox it went from my bank account to dwolla then to Mt Gox.

Edit: To be more detailed you first verify to dwolla that you are the owner of your bank account by reporting the exact values of 2 small deposits to your bank account. Then you tell them how much you want to move to dwolla and they do a pull from your bank account like paypal does. After that you send the money to Mt Gox with a comment including your mt gox account number (this is shown on the add funds page).
80  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: how long to transfer coins directly from the client? on: June 06, 2011, 04:47:02 AM
Ah I just assumed since the software seems to list number of blocks instead of block number there would be a difference of one since the first block was number 0.
