That's the post, with, like I said, the itemized numbers to get to 80k/family of 4. I would really like to see your list of estimated costs, so we can compare, critique, and come up with the most likely scenario.

Listen, I want free society. I can't stand the current US government -- I think you're right, that there is TONS of room for improvement, most relating to replacing people in simple jobs with computers. Whenever I have to work with someone whose job could be replaced by a computer, I make a note. We've got a lot of optimization we could do.

Most of my dislike for large organizations comes from being in charge of various things -- volunteer groups, etc. It's enough trouble getting things done correctly when you're in charge of 400 people, let alone 400 million -- I can't even imagine how that works. What I HAVE learned though is that larger groups get better deals on things. Better hotel group rates. Preference for renting buildings. I think part of the reason the US government can do what it does for the price it does has to do with it's size -- we're able to secure what we want for a lower price, because we're just so big.

At the end of the day, I think people are smart, and if given the opportunity and responsibility will do the right thing. Here in America, we were fairly recently given the opportunity and responsibility to decide how we wished to be governed -- our current system is what we've come up with, and it's worked pretty well, as evidenced by the fact that we haven't had any major revolutions/coups etc (at least since 1865).

It's very easy to provide services at a better rate considering all the waste, excess benefits and corruption that exist in government. Really, it's very silly that you propose such an argument.

With profit incentive, things can be made very cheaply. Have you heard of bureaucracy? It's a derogatory term for a reason.

I bet my life that if you disbanded all these government services, cheaper and more efficient ones would take their place assuming people actually wanted them.

I itemized prices with free market alternatives earlier. I even sliced some of them down to account for more competition without government monopolies. Those are the numbers I was referring to.

$25,019,360,000,000. That's the number, in dollars it would take to provide every person with the services I outlined. Lets divide that by four, since those numbers were for families of 4 (more or less). Actually, let's be nice and say there's at least 6 people per family.

4.17 Trillion. US budget for 2012 was 3.72 Trillion.

Seems to me like the US is providing those services for much cheaper than I could. PLEASE, PLEASE find better numbers than I did, rather than skirting around it.

Froggy, did we really just find 4 blocks in an hour? Pretty cool if we did =)

Pointing my new 1090t at your pool Froggy. =)

The other MAJOR con at the moment is the relatively cheap cost of performing a 51% attack.
588  Other / Off-topic / Re: Solar Panels, Home fuel cells, etc? on: December 06, 2011, 10:02:07 PM
If you're not afraid to go the DIY route, you can get enough cells to make a 3KW (or so) array for around $2k USD. There is A LOT of soldering to be done if you go this route, not to mention placing them on boards, getting a charge adapter etc. but if you live where there's lots of sun...
589  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Bounty for QR Code LTC Payment Processor on: December 06, 2011, 09:45:23 PM
Yeah, I was just suggesting that:

Seller could display BTC, LTC, or both

Buyer scans.
If it's BTC, app defaults to BTC. LTC, it defaults to LTC. Both, the app would decide, based on balance/address, which to use. Or it could manually ask.

I'm really not sure about having one app manage both, but I'm not a fan of "catch all" apps anyway. Obv. if the bounty is there for it, it's worth looking into.
590  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Bounty for QR Code LTC Payment Processor on: December 06, 2011, 09:21:52 PM
Really, outside of a couple things (what the address is) BTC and LTC are pretty much the same, as far as using them goes. The easiest thing would be to have the payer's app detect if it's an LTC address (starts with L) and act accordingly.

My GF and I might work on this over break. If you have any features you'd like to see, post them so we can get a better idea of what this'll entail.

Once pooler releases the source, assuming your smartphone is android, it shouldn't be TOO difficult to port it into an android app (android is coded in Java, primarily). By kill the battery I didn't mean drain it, but wear it out -- IIRC that's why you're supposed to remove the battery from you laptop when plugged in and at 100%.

Gotcha, the megadrain on the processor hurts the ultimate battery life?  I'll remember that if I'm using a laptop.  Thanks!

I think it more has to do with the fact that the battery is discharging/recharging at the same time. There may be newer designs that fix this -- it's just a habit I've gotten into. The heat produced by the processor is also not good for battery chemistries.

You would have to write a custom miner to do it, I think. Unless it runs java, in which case you could try pooler's online one. I don't think it would be worth it though -- from my experience phone heatsinks leave something to be desired, not to mention it would kill your battery. To top it all off, those little ARMs don't have all that much muscle.

But if you try it, please post results =)

If I didn't already have an LTC related project I'd jump on this. I have some experience doing just about the same thing on Android, although it would take some work to have it function with LTC. Good to see someone jumping on the ball for this.
596  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Prevention of the 51%-attack on: December 03, 2011, 05:58:43 PM
Tools will one day be created that will mitigate 51% attacks with real world solutions. In a worst case scenario we can always point nukes at the server sites identified as primary attackers.   Wink

Or better yet, point Aunt Tillie at them.

The way I understand it is like corporate ownership -- if you let more than 51% out of your control, someone might buy it up and take over. Since the BTC model hands out "assets" to whoever wants to buy more computers, it's possible for a takeover. Expensive, but possible.

I figured the image itself had something to do with it -- I also pulled apart the HTML just to see if there was something in that. Anyway, kind of a cool hiring process.
598  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Physical Litecoins on: December 03, 2011, 05:25:37 PM
I wonder if there would be a way to encase the private key in clear casting resin, and to get to it you had to break the coin...like a fortune cookie. Would possibly be cheaper than doing metal coins.
599  Other / Off-topic / Re: Can you crack it? on: December 03, 2011, 06:32:37 AM
Almost wonder if the correct answer is "brute force it." Don't see any captchas, might be worth trying a dictionary attack.

I don't really understand the whole point of a bar like that -- I thought the purpose of having physical coins was to facilitate in-person trading, and trading where no network connection is available. Bars don't seem to be good for that.
