battery life is a consideration, and it looks as if I will only get about a third of the life that I was getting under Windows. If you have power monitoring installed, you can see the total power consumption (almost) real time. During block download, your CPU and SSD are actively used. Google the CPU type with "tdp", and you'll see it's maximum power consumption. It's probably 15W. The Hynix adds (up to) 7W. Chances are your laptop consumes only a few watts when idle, and stressing it adds the above 22W. IBD on battery is a challenge. But since it uses USB charging: have you tried charging from a battery pack? I've never tried this with a laptop, so I can't tell if the power output is too little. obviously Bitcoin is making some demands. That's an understatement I have Bitcoin running from a sub-directory in the Downloads directory, and that offends my aesthetics. I really should have planned my file structure before I started to install programs. I'm of a mind to leave it alone and live with its current home. The data is stored in ~/.bitcoin by default, right? That means all you need to do is move Bitcoin Core to wherever you want it to be.

Other / Meta / Re: Identifying the linked-to post in a topic (SMF patch)

Normally, the (optional) fragment identifier at the end of the URL (#msg60743 in the example link) suffices to position the viewport so that the linked-to post is obvious/unambiguous. But, sometimes that mechanism isn't precise enough, like when the post is the last or second-to-last one on its page When images without height/width tags load, the page "jumps" a bit, which makes the post I'm looking for not the first one that shows even if it's in the middle of a long page. I also sometimes lose track of the linked-to post when I scroll around the page for a bit to get some context before reading the actual post (then, I find myself going to the address bar and hitting Enter so that the browser snaps to the right post again). I do that too LoyceV and TryNinja would probably appreciate some notice before you merge it I have so many (old) scrapers, I can't tell if this is going to break something. I'll just see when it happens.
I think your changes are too subtle to quickly identify the post I'm looking for.

In addition, delving into this case, I was able to talk to some people whose level of knowledge is colossal. And they shared information that sinbad was not confiscated by the authorities, saying that this was just a very well-developed trick to relieve tension. I do like the theory but there is one major thing stopping me from believing it and that is the official statement of the Dutch Financial Intelligence and Investigation Service (FIOD), their official website is www.fiod.nl, and the article regarding seizing Sinbad is found here https://www.fiod.nl/fiod-takes-large-crypto-currency-mixer-off-the-air/ which also contains the same image that was present in Sinbad's website. The article explicitly says The servers of Sinbad.io were seized in the Netherlands and Finland. I do believe the domain name and servers were seized, but at the time it did sound like the people operating it would continue. Then Admin locked their topic and banned the OP from Bitcointalk, so it ended here.

Explain the Unspendable Transaction Output (UTXO) model UTXO stands for "unspent transaction output". It's probably a good idea to explain how transaction change works, I've seen many Newbies who got confused. The cash analogy fits better than the banking analogy.

I have started a learn and earn program for my facebook group members What's the goal for the participants? Do they want to "get rich quick", "earn money on the internet", or how to safely store Bitcoin after buying it? If it's the first two, I can't help them much. But if it's the latter, they don't need to learn a lot before they can start doing it. There's no need to install a full node for instance.

Other / Meta / Re: Can Grin become a payment method again?
|
on: April 03, 2024, 05:34:15 PM

I think that the problem is that Grin had bad marketing / business development. Many people never really warmed up to Grin. Truth be told, it's going to be VERY DIFFICULT to create an alternative SoV/payments cryptocurrency (besides stablecoins) that could rival bitcoin, even with a project with good marketing/bizdev. Even those with good technical fundamentals like Monero/Grin will simply just slowly but surely die in terms of attention. Most people are more interested in a quick hype, than anything with good tech. Proof of this statement: look at most altcoins, ICOs, DeFi, NFT and Ordinals. The large majority of it is BS, but because of the hype some people earn a lot of money (and many people no doubt lose money). Add the fact that many "users" don't even want to install their own wallet, and it becomes very difficult to get real users for something that could be good.

Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Securing Electrum seed phrases though Seed Extension
|
on: April 03, 2024, 01:02:02 PM

storing his Bitcoin on an Electrum wallet on cold storage (that never connects to the internet). ~ Now he keeps the original electrum seeds on a piece of paper as well as he is storing it online on his Gmail. That's not cold storage, that's flaming-hot storage! Since you said your friend memorized the passphrase and 'can never forget it', then i am certain it is a weak passphrase, Even better: he memorized 5 passphrases. if someone hacks his seed phrases both physically or online, that is of no use because he has seed extensions to the seed phrases which only he knows about. A seed phrase has 2 functions: provide a strong random number, and avoid mistakes writing it down. OP's friend basically replaced the first function by his own passphrases, and I doubt they have the same strength. But the second function is completely gone: one mistake and he loses access. Creating your own "system" for Bitcoin storage is, in general, a bad idea.

let's say the maximum number of merits that someone can receive from an individual user should be reduced from 50 to say 30 (or less) in one month. This would not solve the problem, but it would slow down the progress of those trying to outwit the system. I doubt that's going to change anything. If they have more than 30 sMerit per month, they'll just make their circle of "friends" bigger.

Jr. Member Chibit01 caught my attention by posting old news in the WO thread: In a landmark ruling, the London High Court declares Craig Wright is not the creator of Bitcoin, ending a contentious legal battle with COPA. This looks like plagiarism, but I can only find it in Google (without real link). Please ban Chibit01 for this plagiarism: Copy: The future of mining lies in the use of renewable energy. Since the construction of green energy on a global scale is quite expensive, it is necessary to eliminate the emergence of excessive power capacity. To do this, it is necessary to find energy consumers with oversupplies. This is where power-intensive mining comes to the rescue. Thanks to the very flexible ability to turn mining systems on and off, they can act as buyers of excess power. With mining, it will not only be possible to use electricity rationally but also to make a faster profit from renewable sources, and such examples already exist.
One of the promising areas of the mining industry will be cloud mining, which, despite its shortcomings, has good prospects for the future. The first perspective is the increasing number of users attracted to cryptocurrency mining using cloud mining. Due to the growing interest in cryptocurrencies, more and more people want to start earning from them. Cloud mining provides the opportunity to make digital money without purchasing and setting up specialized equipment. The second prospect is an improvement in mining technology. Cloud mining companies are constantly working to improve technology to increase the efficiency and profitableness of crypto mining. This can be achieved by using new mining algorithms and improving mining hardware and software. Older original: b2binpay.com. I bet he posted in WO hoping to get Merit.Update: He edited his post and added a link. In case someone's bored: he probably has more plagiarism.

Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Attacks to influence the difficulty adjustment algorithm of Bitcoin mining
|
on: April 03, 2024, 09:18:03 AM
|
What if it would be possible to influence a Bitcoin node into believing the current time, is a date far in the past where the difficulty was lower, and therefore it might be easier to mine a block and get newly generated Bitcoins as a reward? That's not going to work. The difficulty is determined every 2016 blocks (~14 days). If you manage to get the time on all nodes a week behind, the difficulty will go up more (to reach an average 10 minute block time). If anything, you could try the opposite: make it look as if 28 days have passed, so the difficulty drops. But every honest node on the network will reject your blocks, so you're wasting hash power on a worthless Fork.

Is $weetne$$ a very good poster to earn 201 merit in 60 days with 150 post? Nope, it's a shitposter and I've added him to my ignore list. Those generic posts in broken English aren't worth reading. It looks like someone found a way to still rank up shitposters despite the Merit system. He's close to Sr. Member now. Maybe we should raise the Merit requirements for those ranks

Economy / Service Discussion / Re: New transaction accelerator on the market - mempool.space
|
on: April 02, 2024, 09:21:35 PM
|
if you post in public the transaction that you want to accelerate, you might be in trouble because if you don't accelerate it and will hope that nodes will forget your transaction soon, then there might come someone evil who will push nodes to broadcast your transaction and it will be unconfirmed till the day recommended fees match to your TX fees. No need to post anything: the moment you broadcast a transaction, it's public knowledge. "Someone evil" can just be a node with very large mempool. But for most other nodes, 1 sat/vbyte is still under the purge limit, so they won't even remember it. The only way to make a signed transaction invalid is by moving at least one of the inputs (with a higher fee).
