I tested one at 20%  it was very quiet.

I have not heard an S3,  but I concur with @philipma1957. I had my S7-LN running the fans at 20% and it was very quiet, temps were 48/51 rising to 52/55 after running overnight. I sit at my computer maybe 4 feet away and the fan on the Enermax PSU was louder than the S7-LN fans. The only time the S7-LN fans are loud is when the miner reboots/resets, then quiets right down.

363  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience Compac BM1384 Stickminer Official Support Thread on: July 10, 2016, 05:19:42 AM
how long it would take to mine 100USD worth of bitcoin with this usb stick?

and can you mine monero with it? or use minergate?

let's see, with BTC trading for ~650USD/BTC, 100USD is ~0.15384615 BTC.

What you earn each day depends on a lot of factors like how the pool pays out; the total hash rate of the pool; total hash rate in the network; how many blocks the pool finds; how many of those blocks you contributed shares to; the difficulty of the network, etc.

My Compac, clocked at 325MHz, was earning me 1,000-1,250 satoshi ( a satoshi is 0.00000001 BTC) per block at kano.is. I mined there from 16-May to 3-July with a two week break from 8-June to 19-June (no shares contributed) and earned 0.00155947 BTC which works out to 1.01 USD at the current exchange rate. On a good day the Compac was earning about 4,900 satoshi, or about 0.032 USD at the current exchange rate.

Those numbers were all before the halving. To figure out the numbers now, divide everything the miner earns by two. So, instead of earning 1,000-1,250 satoshi per block, it's now 500-625 satoshi per block; about 2,450 satoshi earned on a good day, or 0.016 USD per day at the current exchange rate.

So, you are looking at approximately 6,280 days or 17.2 years. But that's not quite right because it doesn't take into consideration what the future exchange rate might be, any of the subsequent halvings, any changes to hashing rates (pool and whole network), and changes in network difficulty.

Now, that said, you could buy the Compac, point it at solo.ckpool.org and "lottery" mine. Maybe you get lucky and find a block. Finding a block pays ~12.5 BTC which is 8,125 USD before pool fees.

Not sure what the fsck is going on, but I have switched off my S7-LN. I'm pretty sure it's not the miner, but rather something going on in the network.  Sad

We needs some blocks n shit.

Welp, I won't be helping to find them.  Sad  There's some weird network sh!@t going down such that when I start my miners, they can communicate with the pool right up until the miner submits the first result. At that point the pool, every pool I've tried so far, kano.is, eligius, slushpool, and solo.ckpool.org, stops responding until the miner resets the connection to the pool. At that point the pool starts responding again.  Huh Huh Sometimes the stars and bits align on an even word boundary in the network and the pool magically begins to accept shares. At that point all is well until the miner is stopped/restarted, at which time the cycle starts all over again.

My Compac stick miner has been trying for the last two hours to mine at solo.ckpool.org with no luck.

I've sent @kano a more detailed PM with a link to a wireshark packet capture so perhaps he can see what's happening on the pool.

Ain't it grand when you "find" something nice like that?  Cheesy

This parallels my story with LTC. I mined BTC and LTC for a short while back in early 2012. I mined and slurped from faucets about 0.07BTC and some of it helped pay for a @sidehack modded S7-LN. The LTC, however totaled a bit over 7k coins. When I remembered that I had some, and then checked the price it was a bit over $4.00/LTC, and so I sold it in chunks all the way up to almost $6.00/LTC. Some of the proceeds paid some bills, some bought ETH, some bought BTC which then paid for the S7LN, and I still have some LTC.

Some days you're the bug, some days you're windshield.

The user field shouldn't be blank, judging from the screen shot there.

It's not actually blank. It only looks blank in that image because photoshop is my friend.  Grin

I've pointed my S7LN with @sidehacks mod to the pool, but none of the shares are accepted. The current run has been for over an hour and earlier I had it pointed at the pool for close to four hours with the same results. Lots of Diff1# shares, Discarded and Stale, but no DiffA#, DiffR#, or DiffS# shares.

When I login on the web site I can see the worker in the Workers -> Workers page so I know the miner is reaching the pool, but there are no stats shown.

Am I missing some special sauce?

Thanks,

- zed

My @sidehack S7-LN arrived today, and is happily hashing away at ~2.0 TH/s and pulling ~450W at the wall using the Bitmain Enermax PSU.

Nice work @sidehack.

I'm throwing my newly arrived S7-LN @sidehack Special to the cause. It's adding ~2.0T to the pool.

It'd be sweet if I got a block before the halting, but I'm not holding my breath.

An old Spondoolies SP20 I sold a while back just started mining again about twenty minutes ago.
Its mining for me for free!
LMAO if it finds the next block.

Smile and say thank you.

I guess the new owner should have bought a clue to go with the miner.

My round two miner arrived a short while ago, and is reporting just over 2.0Th/s and pulling ~450W at the wall per the kill-a-watt.

edit: once I set the fans to 20% (1,680 rpm) it's nice and quiet. Board temps are 48c and 51c.
374  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [∞ YH] solo.ckpool.org 1% fee solo mining USA/DE servers 184 blocks solved! on: July 08, 2016, 01:24:47 AM
No solo luck for me!!  Best Share 52,916,060,888

Geez, I wish I had a best share that high! Granted I'm only mining with one of @sidehack's Compac stick miners so not a ton of hashing power, but lottery mining it is for me.

I mined at kano.is and elegius for a while, but was only getting ~1200 Satoshi/block, so it was going to take a looooooong time to reach the payout threshold, which is what led me to lottery mining at solo.ckpool.org.

375  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Four days to the halving. Who's giving up on mining? on: July 06, 2016, 01:00:46 AM
Unless your miners are so inefficient that they have trouble reaching the minimum payout of your pool, I would just keep them running.

This is when lottery mining kicks in, although I would't want to be lottery mining with a 1,500 watt miner, unless you use the heat from the lottery miner to heat your room/house/whatever.

376  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain's Released Antminer S9, World's First 16nm Miner Ready to Order on: July 04, 2016, 05:41:57 PM
Only a fool pays full price at 2+ BTC for the next batch, with halving in the next 5 days. Bitmain will have to drop S9 price by 50% right after the halving. But stupidity and greedy go hand in hand.

Why would they drop the price? The halving? Nah. They'll drop the price when there is competition from another company. Welcome to monopoly pricing power. If you want to mine with the latest generation of chips, then the S9 is the only publicly available option right now. There are rumors of other current gen chips, but not generally available.

Cheers,

- zed

Hey Folks, I just pointed my GekkoScience Compac at the pool and I'm seeing a lot of these messages:

This is the command I used to start cgminer:

./cgminer -o stratum+tcp://solo.ckpool.org:3333 -u 1KZKt84mNoo3WFyiapRi5NAoi9V5DMi8nr.Compac1 -p x --compac-freq 325

Here are the stats links:
User Stats: http://solo.ckpool.org/users/1KZKt84mNoo3WFyiapRi5NAoi9V5DMi8nr
Worker Stats: http://solo.ckpool.org/workers/1KZKt84mNoo3WFyiapRi5NAoi9V5DMi8nr.Compac1

When I look at the User stats it shows that there are multiple workers, but there is just one worker, and that seems to be correctly reflected in the worker section of the JSON, and in the Worker link. I would expect that the 1-day and 7-day stats are off since I haven't been running long enough to have accurate numbers there, but the 1-minute and 5-minute shouldn't be zero, right? Also, should I expect to see the Accepted shares counter increment?

edit: I don't know what happened, but magically I'm now seeing [2016-07-03 01:38:38.824] Accepted <blah blah blah> messages in the window, the A: count is going up, the diff is now 16, and the stats links are showing numbers that now make sense.

And  guess what? they raised 200 or so million dollars for what? Investing in hypothetical Ethereum and smart contract related startups!

It was just a bit over USD 150 million until the USD/ETH exchange rate popped to USD 20/ETH just prior to the recursive send exploit event that formed the "dark DAO."
