1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: NXT coin - A total scam? on: January 21, 2014, 11:38:39 PM
I see great promise in NXT, I've set up the .jar and gotten 2 NXT from the faucet, but I am not spending _any_ money on it until I see a real source release.  There is no longer any reason to withhold source.  The argument that clones sprung up instantly?  By now, NXT is reasonably well-known, a pure clone is not going to overcome NXT's first-mover status.  "many of Nxt's advanced features are still being developed and are very new. "  <-- What's that got to do with anything?  Have a staging branch and a release branch, if you like.  I think the author means well, but he needs to realize that the real, full source is needed for anyone to trust NXT.

This is a very interesting idea (although not entirely new) and I hope that you do start developing it. I know very little Java and no C#, however if you need testing or VMs, let me know. PM or IRC.

I'm very excited, but ofc they'll never release the code, so I'll be forced to cave on non-FOSS on least one install. Not to mention we'll probably need to use a Debian-based distro at first. Maybe a Debian install with Steam and all the non-FOSS contained in there?

This is indeed a brilliant idea. I think weusecoins would be the best place to link, its what I think of as the "newbie link".

The specific item that prompted this post was just me spending a few mins reading through the Technical Development threads. As I'm not a programmer, it's all alien to me, and so I stand in admiration at the expertise and knowledge of these people. It's getting harder for me to think up reasons why the Bitcoin project could fail, with such minds behind it.
What impresses me most of all are the threads about doomsday scenarios & astronomically unlikely accidents, and all the people busily thinking up failsafes & such. They prepare for many things that will probably never happen. but they always have an answer. This is also what impresses me about the Tor project development.
7  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin potential value on: July 20, 2012, 07:49:55 PM
If bitcoin was used for every single trade made by every single person on the planet, the system would collapse in about 0.5 seconds... Smiley The internet would probably also collapse... We would probably need much more capacity, hard drives would be too small, processing power too slow, and we would need like a few hundred different crypto currencies...

Remember, the Electrum thin client only prevents the need for the hard drive space, but it doesn't reduce the network load at all. Besides, that would lead to dangerous centralization.
8  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Case sizes, Mid Vs Full on: July 20, 2012, 07:43:27 PM
I have a CM HAF X, cost $180, but its awesome & huge. http://www.coolermaster.com/product.php?product_id=6653 It has about 13'' room for GPUs, also a VGA holder/brace for the cards, which is really nice. Mine started to sag after 2 years.
9  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: satoshi client won't start on: July 20, 2012, 07:40:36 PM
I've had this a few times while distro-hopping, the only solution I've found is to shut down bitcoind, delete the .bitcoin folder, (backup your wallet first ofc), then restart bitcoind.

This warning is triggered when all of the blocks incoming are rejected. It means that either someone is pulling an expensive targeted attack on you (unlikely) or that you are running an old version of the client. If neither is true, you can probably redownload the block chain to fix it.
11  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Bitcoin Bus - We will print it on a real bus! on: July 20, 2012, 12:00:47 AM
This is a brilliant idea, please post lots of pics if it happens! Also, seeing as the exchange rate just went through the roof, you should probably hurry while your collected BTC are most valuable Smiley I wish I had a business to advertise Tongue
12  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [Announce] "Pay What You Want" at CoinDL - downloads marketplace, Bitcoin-only on: July 19, 2012, 08:39:45 PM
Hi jbreher,
Clearly increasing the upload limit is going to the ultimate solution but we'll change our suggestion when we've found something better for lossless audio compression. Or feel free to suggest one...thing is, it needs to be easy for most people to get their hands on so not to exotic. Again..the upload limit....

Thanks,
weex

Have you tried .wav with .7z compression? 7z can go to very high ratios, at a mild cost of CPU time. I just tried it on a .wav sound effect I had lying around, I got 33% compression. Longer files generally get better compression.

http://www.bitcointerror.com - Play Urban Terror (FPS), lose BTC per death, gain per kill.
(I don't run it, just stumbled across it, looks cool)
Thx for the list!
14  Other / Off-topic / Re: First quantum computer? on: April 08, 2012, 04:17:29 PM
That's pretty awesome. Diamond-based quantum computers have been theorized for a while now. The craziest thing, IMO, is that they used already-existing impurities, instead of growing their own diamond. I would never have expected that to work.
15  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTS] CLOTHES: new, custom branded Streetwear / Skatewear on: March 28, 2012, 11:39:51 PM
There's no actual clothes on the site. Is the idea that he'd be printing the designs on t-shirts and stuff?

Yes, the business is just starting up, so I don't have pictures of the finished product yet. At this point I am mostly trying to prove that there is a market here. Once interest has been expressed I'm sure he'll get me some ads / pics quickly.
16  Economy / Goods / [WTS] CLOTHES: new, custom branded Streetwear / Skatewear on: March 28, 2012, 10:46:49 PM
IDEA Clothing

A friend of mine is starting a small business selling his own brand of clothing. I want to find him some buyers in the Bitcoin community. This is a great way to get another business into the Bitcoin community, so if you are interested, or know someone who is, please post or PM.

Selling Streetwear and Skatewear for BTC equivalent of CAD. A few sample pictures have been posted at http://idea-clothing.tumblr.com . If interest is shown here I'm sure I can get more detailed pictures.

17  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Trust No One on: March 21, 2012, 02:02:46 AM
"trust noone" is bullshit. grow some balls, trust some people and take risks. otherwise we're getting nowhere: everyone just sitting on his rotten pile. money must flow, otherwise it's not money.

An economy is people working together, having ideas, producing stuff, investing their money. How is that supposed to work if noone trusts anyone?

Good point. However, that is optional trust. The whole point of cryptocurrencies, and thus Bitcoin, is that you aren't FORCED to trust anyone. Also, an economy only requires people to trust that others will act in their own self-interest. Being trustworthy is good for business, if the system is good. The optimal system is where all people's best interests are mutual, therefore, no conflict/crime.

19  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Fuck YOU! First post! on: March 15, 2012, 07:27:00 PM
This rule doesn't make much sense. they should just make an account do a captcha every time u post, until 50 posts or whatever. I wouldn't mind but it would block bots.
20  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Introduce yourself :) on: March 15, 2012, 07:14:44 PM
Hello everyone. I'm Lordcirth, a PC gamer, a hobby miner, and I need 5 posts.  In other news, a friend is selling his own brand of clothing, and I think he'll start accepting BTC if I get him an offer. So, anyone interested in Streetwear/skatewear clothes? PM if you are. TY.
