1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Gridcoin (GRC) - first coin utilizing BOINC - Official Thread on: November 20, 2015, 03:10:14 PM
Hey Gridcoin-Folks,

today, Gridcoin reaches the lowest reward phase with the last reduction of block rewards. The protocol will stay at this level regardless of new and growing BOINC users.

Proof-of-Research consists for one part of Proof-of-Stake paying interest to stakeholders for securing the blockchain and for the other part of Proof-of-BOINC with a block subsidy paid towards active research participants. A comparison of those different proof mechanisms was done by user RTM: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSg2Dt61DQs

At this stage, the Max Block Subsidy is reduced from 75 to 50 GRC.
Interest on positive balances is reduced from 3.0 percentage points to 1.5 percentage points per year.

For details and examples on reward calculation go to
http://wiki.gridcoin.us/Proof-of-Research

As of now, Gridcoin has a working "Research Age" feature which is able to support hundreds of thousands of researchers without mining losses. One month ago, Robert Halford introduced this new feature in a screencast:

...a good POS coin?

Trick question? Also, is it just me or are all the gridcoin "comics" really terrible?
lol, we will try harder next time. it is a complex story to tell Smiley

there were a lot of things happening:

Press Release: PiGrid - get rewarded for helping research projects at home

Researchers already have technologies that can help in the fight against climate change and diseases.
Yet, those technologies often depend on large computational ressources for simulation and validation.
Now, a combination of innovations allows to incentivize progress.

In citizen science projects, each individual can volunteer to help.
By devoting spare computing time to research groups everyone could "recycle" idle working time of any computing device for a good cause.
BOINC[1] is a scientific network that has a paramount solution to manage the needed logistics:
it distributes small work units to participating computers for calculation and collects their results later while maintaining scalability.
On top of that, another innovation, Gridcoin[2], is able to reward participation in the BOINC network.
Gridcoin uses a blockchain algorithm to achieve fast and secure payments in a global, energy-efficient network.
While Bitcoin was consuming more than 15 Million US-Dollar in electricity each day[3], Gridcoin is able to strip energy waste and
dedicate 98% of globally networked ressources to scientific tasks.
This became possible by utilizing self-organizing properties of Bitcoin, asymmetric cryptography of Blackcoin[4] and
Gridcoins advanced blockchain concepts in "proof-of-research".

Still, a remaining problem is user adoption. The setup of Gridcoin combined with BOINC is time consuming and tricky.
This bars novices from easy access. In order to provide end users with a plug-n-play solution, PiGrid[5] has developed open-source software
that works out of the box and takes care of all related configurations and updates.
PiGrid can be used on existing hardware or bundled with pre-installed systems.
A graphical user interface allows choice of research projects via drag-and-drop, monitoring of progress and tracking rewards in Gridcoin.
The first generation of PiGrid solutions will be crowdfunded in this Kickstarter: http://pigrid.com/kickstarter

the network should have inherent value in it self. Each new block should not only represent an amount of wasted electricity, but also equal an amount of research that took place, like in Gridcoin (hey, they are hot and bring relevant changes into the crypto space, see for instance http://pigrid.com )

Besides, Robert Halford has accumulated quite a record in the past 24 months:
his effort is relentless, all the while he is responsive to input.
moreover, innovation cycles are short, some days there were multiple updates to the codebase.
Gridcoin is rising Wink

energy issues are very sensitive. if you believe the early dev?

I am sorry, I probably did not get that commment right. What do you mean, whether I believe Gridcoins dev to solve all energy issues of blockchain technology? Well, I can actually see my computers use the electricity to calculate research work units and I can also see my Gridcoin wallet getting a higher balance every day so yes, I believe we are going into the right direction here!

Hey Sep, great idea on the tipbot, I was thinking about something like this just the other day. I think I might go on a massive tipping spree across all of freenode lol Smiley

We now have a IRC tipbot at #gridcoin on freenode. Join us there for some tipping action. Type !help in channel for info.
lol, would love to see this happen, did you shout out already?

Guys, let's list all our stuff that has been collecting dust for sale on Cointopay! I put up some of my gpus and older PC stuff up! I think this would be a great way for newbies to get some GRC, but don't have bitcoin and don't want to deal the hassles of opening exchange acc. They can just list their stuff for sale and get into the Gridcoin economy that way! I created a sales thread where people can list their stuff here: https://cryptocointalk.com/topic/38289-cointopay-sales-thread-post-your-stuff/
yeah, new growth potential! Smiley
