Maybe this is a stupid question, but... why did you keep that money in mybitcoin and not in your own bitcoin client wallet?

Ah, yes. The bulk of my wealth are stored on my desktop and netbook. They are my personal belonging. I don't bundle other people's money o business stuff with my personal saving. Bitcoin Weekly money are also stored in mybitcoin.

I used to be the escrow for the bitcoin animation bounty which were kept by me and noagendamarket as well as some other guy I don't remember with absolutely no problem. It was around ten thousand bitcoin. I don't think anybody have pointed out that storing the money in a third party wallet service is a bad idea on top of trusting people to hold your money. I was scared for holding that much money rather than being scared that mybitcoin might go down.

In any case, it was a serious mistake. A mistake that is difficult to see without hindsight.

I PMed bitlex.
1123  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: MyBitcoin guys might NOT be thieves!!! on: August 02, 2011, 12:52:46 AM
At what point were they very trustworthy?

They were the earliest ewallet service and lot of old timers like me used it. At one time, it hold the largest bitcoin development bounty prize in the world.
1124  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: MyBitcoin guys might NOT be thieves!!! on: August 02, 2011, 12:46:28 AM

I posted that mybitcoin was a scam almost a month ago on July 5th, and that was after trying to contact them for over a week.  Not trying to gloat here, but I don't understand why people didn't remove their money while they had the chance.  Very puzzled by you humans.

Because mybitcoin was not a scam. It was a very trustworthy service at that time.

From the old donation thread:

17.5 BTC were mine. The rest are bitlex(100BTC), and smoketoomuch(500BTC). This is because I remember donating 17.5 BTC.

We all have learned our lessons regarding bitcoin.

The community learned that bitcoin is real shit and we better treat all real shit like it's supposed be treated, with care.

Bitcoin isn't going to simply make us rich unless we treat it like an asset.

I am going to ahead with the bankruptcy process.

I think the largest debtor I have is SmokeTooMuch.

That's your prerogative but it hasn't even been 72 hours since the site went offline.

True....but I been keeping their funds for several months. It's time to give it back.

Right now, I am trying to make a determination of my possible debt.

How long was the last downtime?
1129  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: mybitcoin - leaseweb - proposal on: August 02, 2011, 12:21:06 AM
This is a good idea.

It's been over a month. People have been trying to contact MyBitcoin for at least that long with no response.

In that case, my heart just sank lower.

If mybitcoin was unattended for that long..then we're all fucked. There were warning sign, but we didn't heed it because mybitcoin was so trustworthyin the past.

I am never storing any significant amount of bitcoin on any ewallet service ever again.
1132  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: MyBitcoin guys might NOT be thieves!!! on: August 02, 2011, 12:04:01 AM
How many people were believed to work there? Were they all in a small geographic area? Perhaps they got hit by an earthquake or someone ran a digger thru the fiber trunk or somthing...

1 man.

The average IQ will always be 100.

Arguably (and fascinatingly) untrue:

IQ tests are updated periodically.

Average IQ is 100, and half the population is dumber than that.  I'm fine with a loosely representative corporate police state until something better comes along.  I can participate by timely buying a piece of the correct entities.

A pure democracy would be horrifying.

The average IQ will always be 100.

And I hope we all move all our money to some place else where they have dedicated staffs and multiple communication lines.

paid by who? afaik mybitcoin did not charge anything, there was no income to support dedicated staff.
if it is a one man show and someone else did his homework and visited him first, he might have been hijacked. attack vector via the site operator, hope he is alive.

otoh after their previous poblems with server performance and not being accessible few weeks ago (mid June, site was up but login did not work) he at least wrote a few lines note about the ongoing upgrade on the first page which worked back then. what is strange is that the June maintenance was about adding servers and it looks like they only use 1 ip address. this should not be a problem to arranche a load balancing device that would mask the whole bunch of servers behind one address, it's just strange that not even the first page shows up. hope it's just a technical problem still and the site operator is on vacation not knowing about the problem.

https://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=17411.0 the June thread

Pretty please let hope that. And I am going to find a better service.

One man operation, no dedicated support staff is not worth the freebies.

Democracy means you get to vote against the laws that you don't like, it does not mean you can disregard those laws at your personal discretion.

You can disregard immoral unethical laws.  You know that the vast majority of Americans were against the bank bailouts, but congress did it anyway?  And that the vast majority of Americans are against the illegal wars, but congress does it anyway?

You have no voice in The System except as a milk cow from which they extract your substance.  Come on, man!  Grow some cajones and don't cooperate with an immoral system.

What if the population choose an unethical and evil action? You could vote against it but half of the population already choose to do EVIL!

Democracy doesn't fix things, just give voice to a larger population of people, who may or may not choose wisely.

If mybitcoin.com is a scam, it is one hell of a sophisticated scam.

Screwup is a hell lot more likely.
1139  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: mybitcoin down or just me? on: July 31, 2011, 08:23:42 PM

I hope it is back up tomorrow.

If mybitcoin really ran off, that person behind would've netted like 10k+ dollars of bitcoins  Angry

The only thing I can do is beg for forgiveness from donors so that I will not be saddled with a 10K debt.
