This Japanese lady can do fluent English reading and writing?  Shocked
1603  Economy / Economics / Re: Nobel economist Krugman on bitcoin and crypto-currencies. on: May 27, 2011, 10:56:22 PM
So somehow a group of 13000 or so forum users are effectively indulging in hivemind thinking when they reason that the economic model adopted by the entire world, with several documented records of horrible failure, is flawed?

At this point I'd rather be on the hivemind side...

It is a self-selecting effect because people adopt bitcoin if they think it will works. If you think the bitcoin deflationary model is bad, than that doubt might be enough to persuade you from using bitcoin.

Just like bitcoin wasn't invented until a cryptographer/programmer with no sense of mathematical of beauty wrote it. Maybe he does, but he was far more pragmatic than most cryptographers.

1606  Economy / Economics / Re: Nobel economist Krugman on bitcoin and crypto-currencies. on: May 27, 2011, 08:49:59 PM
Krugman's opinion would be similar to Cowen's or any of the other mainstream guys who refuse to think it is viable:

a wise man once said, "It is difficult for a man to understand something when his job depends on not understanding it."

Refusal to understand means they lose out on bitcoin.
1607  Economy / Economics / Re: Nobel economist Krugman on bitcoin and crypto-currencies. on: May 27, 2011, 08:35:34 PM
The problem with economists is that they have no way conduct scientific experiment on monetary policies. Yes, there are data, but interpretation is everything.

Economists can have interpretations that fit the data but it turns out to be bollock.

Population is less of a problem if you colonize space to extract more energy from the sun.

It is also less of a problem if we decrease the energy requirement of each individuals. That may require genetic engineering or cybernetic enhancement.

I am optimistic that we will reach 1 trillion human beings, no problem.

Believing starvation is coming to decimate us all because there's so much human beings is merely a failure of imagination. People starve not so much because of the lack of  the food but the lack of efficient and robust market that can distribute food and stabilize the supply. There may be lack of speculators who would bear the risk or it is not possible to transport food.

You can have the most efficient agricultural output in the world, but it means dilly squat if you can't get it to the right people.
1612  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Has bitcoin spurred your interest in technology/economics? on: May 27, 2011, 12:18:57 AM
I'm actually kind of bummed. When I first got into BTC over a year or two ago, I had well over 100 coins. It was at a time when the coins had a value of a fraction of a cent. Since then things have really taken off, and you can buy more than just books with bitcoins, but they have actual value (primarily for people trying to money launder, but that's a whole other story).

But now, it is extremely hard to mine, and the pools just don't come close to paying out like they used to. I feel like just two weeks ago was the last time BTC was actually profitable, and it is just compounding to be more and more difficult to get the sweet sweet sticky coin. Sigh, how I only wish I didn't procrastinate on getting back on this train and I could have actually made a decent profit and got tons of 5830s to boot.

You could alway write for http://www.bitcoinweekly.com/pages/submission but then it will be actual hard work.

I apologize. Based on the correspondence on the thread to date, I'm not longer interested as I don't think we'd be a good fit for each other.

Why? I am one of the most reliable employer in the bitcoin economy. I paid for 22 out of 29 articles/comic.
1614  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Has bitcoin spurred your interest in technology/economics? on: May 26, 2011, 11:54:00 PM
I love economics and technologies...but I become obsessed...with bitcoin.

I end up creating a publication called http://bitcoinweekly.com/

I am in the process of adding an "action" section. This section shows up after the content section when you finish reading the article. In the next few days or so, I will add in things to do like..tweet this article..

Public relations (what used to be called propaganda) is a weapon. Either we understand how it is used and protect ourselves with it, or we make ourselves vulnerable to those who are skilled in its use.

We should not make the job of those who would see bitcoin fail any easier than it already is. Ponzi schemes, deranged ancap/sociopathic rants and weak self-evaluation work to undermine this project.

There is an inherent tension between promoting free speech, which we bitcoiners value a lot, and PR, which is making us looks politically correct or inoffensive.
1617  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Liberals, why do you like Bitcoin? on: May 26, 2011, 03:48:54 PM
\

Bitcoins are not going to change the way society operates but if they do, great. If you sit down 1 on 1 with a liberal ask them how they feel about the value of the dollar I doubt your answer would be much different then that of a "conservative". You're implying an awful lot about liberals and come off as rather elitist in your main post.

It is a mistake to think there is no political consequences to technologies. Take a look at the Arab Spring. If bitcoin is a libertarian pipe dream, the political implication for conservatives/liberals are simply, dire.
1618  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: BitDNS Bounty (3500 BTC) on: May 26, 2011, 03:05:18 PM
Is this different than the current Namecoin (dot-bit.org) bootstrap project, or are they one in the same?

They are pretty much the same.
1619  Other / Obsolete (buying) / Re: Bitcoin Weekly Looking For Writers on: May 26, 2011, 02:50:04 PM
OK, well, I'd be happy to do an article on the social and economic aspect of a digital currency on emerging college/uni students, but I work at a rate of 1BTC/100 words, standard.

The problem with finding reliable writers is you don't really have a set of content for them to write about; a lot of writers have problems free-writing.

KP

I cannot afford such expensive rate. Bitcoin Weekly is capital poor.
