1  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Mt.Gox [BETA] on: February 25, 2014, 03:50:40 PM
It's a shame a magic card trading site would have turned out better for him.
Nah.. I think things probably turned out fine for *HIM*... Him running a card trading site instead of a bitcoin site would have turned out a lot better for us though for sure..

I'm sure he's got a personal wallet worth a fair sum and will be retiring in the south of France any day now.
2  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: If MtGox can ident the Bitcoins, why not fix it? on: February 25, 2014, 03:38:29 PM
there never was double spends.

Only bad money managing from Gox
There were double withdrawals though. And at least Mt Gox should have a record of by who..

You could probably get a pretty good idea with careful examination of the blockchain, but you'd need Mt Gox's withdrawal records to be sure.. but the exact same amount withdrawn to the same address more than once, combined with hash padding issues seems like a good place to start.. Cross referenced with Mt Gox withdrawal records and their KYC records and it seems like you should be able to knock on someone's door and ask some good questions..
3  Economy / Economics / Re: BTC vs CC for ecommerce, advantage CC. on: January 07, 2014, 05:05:58 AM
It's up to the merchant to reward the customer for using BTC, which is well within their capability to do (and some merchants do... like Gyft)..

When credit card companies give you 1.5% cash back, they are giving you 1/2 (or less) of the extra money they made the merchant charge you back to you.

If a merchant can accept payment in bitcoin, then they can charge 3% less (generally) and still be ahead on the costs of accepting credit cards (because there are no charge backs or credit card fees for them to worry about).

It's pretty well established that the overall cost of the credit card system is much higher than using bitcoin.  There's normally a much higher disparity than that for remittances as well, which is another area where bitcoin can really help..

If you read some bitcoin FAQ's or watched an introductory video or something, you'd know all of this already.

4  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: How to drive the mining difficulty toward 0 rather than infinity! on: July 11, 2013, 06:08:07 PM
It's complicated, and people don't seem to be willing (or able) to think it through.  It's a shame though, because it's an interesting idea..

The worry I have under this scheme is the network.  Miners are going to want to "advertise" their blocks to as many clients as possible to up their changes of winning the election. They might also create other blocks and advertise them too hoping they'll take hold.. I could see a feedback loop ambitious enough to try to split the internet.. Then you might end up with two chains for a bit longer...

It's a very interesting idea though, and it's really possible (likely) that I'm not really understanding it correctly.. I think that's why you've got people reacting with their gut instinct instead of logic.  Their guts tell them that whenever you try to take the cost out of something valuable you've got a problem...

I think you should take a page from Satoshi's book and back it up with code.... If there's a way prevent *everyone* from trying to enter the lottery 8 trillion times, you might have something there..

6  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: The Solution To Oversleeping on: March 15, 2013, 11:21:30 PM
Is that the solution to oversleeping, or will it be the reason for it?

I could see turning off the alarm and falling back asleep because I was afraid of the cost Smiley... Especially at that price..

How about a price that starts low, and ramps up with the number of times you try to snooze it?
7  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: My Bitcoin master thesis on: February 19, 2013, 06:59:21 AM

Hope you'll enjoy the reading. I'd like to apologize for the use of polish at the start (it was a requirement), and for some boring introduction of basic things (also a requirement).

Donations welcome:

I'm sending a little for page count alone, even if much of it was index and references.. Someday when I have time to read it, maybe I'll send more if it's good Wink..

Anyone here has had luck or not on gambling site?

Only anyone that's ever gambled.

I won a Bitcoin this one time.. but another time I lost one.. On the whole, I've lost a little more than I've won.

9  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: BitCoin apps for iPhone? (without jailbreaking) on: December 30, 2012, 04:12:51 AM
I've still got QR

Huh.. I just put it on the iPad, and I've got it there too.. It was definitely gone for a bit... I tried to put it on my wife's phone a while back and it was useless due to apples restrictions..

Looks like they quietly snuck it back it.. If you read the changelog it certainly looks like it should still be gone Smiley..

Apple will not delete or modify your apps if they are neutered for extra-legal concerns. You have to intentionally delete them or update them to a neutered version, yourself.

But there is no newer version available.  Also OP seemed to like it after a fresh install two days ago.

Again, where's the reference?

I think that just the QR Code scanning feature was removed in the newer versions..

Other than that, everything is available on the web page anyway, so it's probably just a limited browser application that pins you to their site, and cleans up the interface a little..

I'd love to know if newer versions allow you to buy something by just pointing your camera at a QR code, and then hitting approve/send..

I've been a member for a (reasonably) long time, but have rarely been logged in when reviewing posts. I rarely see much of anything to post about in the newbie forums (to be honest, I rarely see anything in the newbie forums).

I occasionally see things that I'd like to reply to in the other forums though.  The thread that inspired this message is the "Faircoin" thread. I'd like to respond to the authors idea with a possible solution to his (or her) idea that initial blocks in a "faircoin" system would have no reward.  This (IMHO) is completely defective as there is no incentive for people to participate until after many people are already participating.  I would suggest to him that a more appropriate schema would be:

1. Reward based on a combination of the block number and the difficulty. Reward gradually reduces as block number increases, but not as rapdily as the Satoshi system since it's also regulated by the difficulty.
2. Reward has a lower limit (maybe 0.01 FC or something) and there is no cap on the total volume of currency, to allow for permanent expansion of the  economy, but in a very limited way.
3. Difficulty adjustments every N blocks (to ensure that rapid growth means rapid difficulty adjustment - downside: negative growth takes a long time to correct for, but keep N smallish to mitigate that)
4. Transaction fees remain the same as the bitcoin system.

This leaves people with incentive to participate from the beginning.
Mining rewards (even in the beginning) are tied loosely to mining costs.
Still acts somewhat like gold in that there isn't an actual limit on total currency, but there is a practical one..

I have 400 namecoin.. That's it.. It still looks like they have namecoin support from my account. Maybe that's only because I have namecoin there..

I had high hopes for them too, but I must admit, whenever I want to actually trade BTC, I headed over to MTGox... I kept a balance there for a while, but I never actually felt like trading where the volume always sucked.. Campbx always felt that way too.. I haven't been there in a while either.. I hope for their sake that they're doing better than Ruxum.

Bitcoinmarket has practically zero volume these days... Last trade there was on 11/06/11.  That one makes me really sad. Wasn't that the very first exchange?  They held my Bitcoins for me that I purchased at 1.39 cents until after their peak of $30.
