1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Add2PSU vs dual ATX cables on: February 01, 2018, 03:53:54 PM
Would be nice to get a real answer here instead of the snyde remarks...
Two Gold PSUs are a very cost effective way to setup a mining rig, 1200w PSUs are very expensive.

So, let's try this again...
The Add2Psu as I understand it will turn the 2nd PSU ON AND OFF in sync with the first.
The interconnect cable may only turn PSU #2 ON, but maybe not OFF?

I haven't tried this yet, just about to setup my rig and I want to use the right part for the job.
Don't bother replying if you have nothing useful to add.

Add2PU is a relay device; meaning it will power on and off the second PSU and keep it in the same state as the first PSU.

Interconnect cable is more for a motherboard which will send the power on signal to both devices. While it performs a similar function, it will not relay the power state between the two power supplies and it's possible for one to go off with the other still running.

Generally speaking, it isn't a good idea to mix power supplies but if you had to do it I would go with an add2psu as the relaying of power on/off would be more reliable than just using an interconnect cable rigged to always be on.

3  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3+ Discussion and Support Thread on: March 12, 2015, 04:25:53 PM
At first I thought my 2nd S3+ was in a smokey environment but it turns out I must have been simply pushing my power supply too hard... Had both of the miners running off of a CX750M and I saw smoke coming from the pci-e port on the psu... So any recommendations for a psu that will run both without catching fire or something...? Probably 1000w at least?

An 850/1000 Gold rate PSU would do just fine for your S3+ units and give you better power efficiency. Some PSUs to consider would be:

- EVGA G2 Supernova 850w or 1000w

*note: There is 1300w version and its about $70 bucks more than the 850w but unless you are planning on getting a third unit, I would go for the 1000w.
or

- Coolmaster V850 or V1000 (850w and 1000w respectively)

*note: The 1000w is only like $10-15 dollars more than the 850w, so I would go for the extra wattage unless you are on a budget.

Both of these recommendations have excellent reviews and should provide a small return in terms of your power bill consumption (assuming you mine 24/7). If you feel rich and want some amazing stuff, look at the Seasonic X series but be prepared to pay a premium for the name / warranty.

P.S. I looked up the CX750M, its only has 62a available on the 12v rail (744w). While not horrible, that particualr PSU is not rated to run with a 96.7% load on it 24/7. Usually most people and myself, would not recommend putting a load on any PSU beyond it's efficiency rating (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/80_Plus)
4  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Running miners outside on: February 18, 2015, 09:04:24 PM
I would recommend a deck box / patio storage bin + a small wire rack inside for outside storage. That would give you some physical precipitation protection and you could organize it however you like on the inside. Ventilation holes would also be a good idea.

6  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Is Novello Technologies a scam? on: June 05, 2014, 08:48:46 PM
As someone further up this thread mentioned; it is best for the community as a whole if the majority of users (especially the older ones) don't support any pre-order model businesses. There are far better options in terms of companies who are actually shipping in hand hardware now.
With all of the recent cases of companies failing to delivery on promises of hardware, hash rate and on time, I simply can't understand why anyone would want to fund them.

tl;dr:

Don't fund an unknown company asking for "pre-order' money. It usually doesn't end well.

Ahm, useful guide.
I seem to be having trouble while logging in, that password doesn't work for me.

Yea root/pi does not work on my pi either. Im waiting for a response from bobsag about what else it could be.

Very weird. I'll upload my imagec file on monday when I get to a place with solid internet.
8  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitfury 16 Chip ASIC on: May 31, 2014, 04:35:14 AM
You can use either one of the following for power:

1.) Barrel Connector to PCI-E; make sure the gauge of your cable will support approximately 40-50w of power running through it for prolonged periods of time. I recommend 18 awg or better. Note: the polarity for the barrel connector is: outer = negative, inner = positive.

2.) The screw 2-pin connectors to an adapted PCI-E power interface or some direct 12V powersupply. If buy some 2-pin screw connectors you can chain supply power up to 3 boards per PCI-E power cable. If you are using a server power supply with good gauge cable (example 14 awg), you may be ale to get away with more in the chain.  Note: The PCB should show which pair of the 4 pins are ground and which are VCC (power).

Also based on your picture, you need to flip the switch on unit for it to be "on". Forgot to add, each board will use up to 50 watts of power, so if you have 1TH of boards, I would plan to have a power supply capable of delivery atleast 1100w or more.

cheers

Ahm, useful guide.
I seem to be having trouble while logging in, that password doesn't work for me.

Are you talking about the original Blackarrow Pi image? And I'm fairly certain that the username/password root/pi is the right combo for default settings. If you changed the password via the passwd change for the root account then it will be whatever you set it to. If you've lost the password your best option is to start from scratch by re-imaging your SD card. ((The other possibility is that you aren't sshing to the right device)). Try using a client like PuTTY to connect to the PI.

I recommend backing up the following files for a quick restore if you ever need to reimage the SD card(winscp is free and work great):

/opt/bitfury/best.cnf
/opt/bitfury/proxy_pools.conf
/opt/bitfury/chainminer/jobconnect.cpp
/run/shm/.stat.log

As for other devices interfacing with the controller; afaik the pi GPIO is the only way to interface with the controller board and I'm assuming all the existing code is written specifically for it.

your power cost is almost 3x what i pay in Ontario, Canada ($0.15/kwh CAD). thats the most significant reason your calculatiuons show no profit

i live in ontario too... based on those figures if i run 8 ants with 650W PSU's am i to assume that my power bill will be $600 / mth?

each ant should be ~$43/mo with 0.15 electric rate or ~$350/mo for eight of them.
[/quote]

This really depends on what kind of power supply you are using / what kind of efficiency you are getting at the wall; Bronze = 85% will mean 400 w = 460w draw at the wall and the best efficiency you can expect is 92% with a platinum rated psu. Generally speaking you can expect to pay $1.56 CAD a day / $48.21 a month for a single S1 at 0.15 cents per kw/h (I'm making the assuming you are OCing and getting near a power draw of 432w per device with a 92% efficiency).

The lowest any one has achieved so far is 140gh/s with a 166w draw from the wall with a platinum rated power supply; that'd be $0.60 a day and $18.53 per month / S1. That'd be $148.20 for your 8 ants Klondike albeit with a loss of 480 gh/s (8x60gh/s).

Thanks helipotte for the info! I'm actually going to OC my pi and see how things work out; I'm finding that chain miner has worked way better for me than cgminer but I may try the mod you suggest and give it another try.

One of the things I'm finding that seems to be common about the frying of boards; this may be because of the SPI connector itself and plugging it in the wrong way (i.e.plugging it in the wrong way). Can you take a pic of the 1.8v regulator / where to put the cap you were talking about?
12  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: [Setup Guide] Blackarrow Bitfury 16 chip board support and tuning thread on: May 24, 2014, 02:34:27 PM
Is there some more support documentation out there on how to set these things up?  I'd like to know a little bit more about how the controller interfaces with the Pi.  I'd prefer to start with a stock Rasbian Wheezy image.  I've got cgminer 4.3.3 building now, but I'm assuming some kind of configuration is required for the Pi to communicate with the controller.

Thanks!

Chad

Here's Kano's guide on how to get it working (he uses Arch linux in the guide tho):

thanks i will check it out my power connections.

seems a dodgy board has killed my controller. im wondering if you have power plugged into your 4x controller or if its just powered by the pi? previously i only had power plugged into the controller and this was also powering the pi, maybe that also contributed.

Try pulling one of your barrel connectors directly into the controller board; the controller should be supplying power to the pi via the 26 pin ribbon cable.

any one else getting a lot of duplicate shares? pool reports around 33k for 750gh, is this normal for these boards?

I'm seeing some high dupe as well. going to take a look at how cgminer performs once I tweak it.

please share your settings, i am using 4.3.3 on default which is supposed to auto tune but saw no improvement over 24 hours.

I tried:

./cgminer -o  -u  -p  --api-listen

after following most of Kano instructions without much success. I also tried:

./cgminer -o  -u -p --api-listen --bab-options 57:54:50:6:6:10000:0:0

but seemed to get some errors with the delay portion of the options (--bab-options max:def:min:up:down:hz:delay:trf). I've since gone back to chainminer as it's proven to be a bit more stable over a 24 hour period and that I've had more success with tuning it over the week that I've had it.
15  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: [Setup Guide] Blackarrow Bitfury 16 chip board support and tuning thread on: May 20, 2014, 01:31:48 PM
are you powering the controller with a barrel lead or something else or does it get power from the pi?

I'm currently using PCI-E to 3 barrel connectors for all my power needs at the moment one word of caution and the reason for why I am replacing my cables; one of the pairs for the PCI-E to barrel connectors frayed every so slightly and caused a brief short. Not sure how it occurred but I've order screw connectors for all of my units and intend to replace all the power connectors (better safer than sorry).  I recommend giving your PCI-E connectors a once over to make sure none of the power (red) or ground (black) are frayed and if they are you should at the very least isolate the damaged cables with small stripe of electrical tape or re solder / re-shrink wrap the cable.
