Anyone have a good technical post on mining pools that do empty blocks.

Here's a good thread that will help explain:

No known issues atm.

Sorted, my dns were playing up.... Tongue

I use IFTTT (If This Then That) to notify of new payouts.

I shared the recipe if anyone wants to use it: https://ifttt.com/recipes/338858-if-bitcoin-received-at-address-then-send-me-a-text-message

Basically it monitors the chain.com API for any incoming tx's to your mining address and sends you a SMS text message when coins are received...

This is cool - is there a charge for the sms?

Not from IFTTT, but perhaps from your carrier. If you pay to receive regular txt messages then I imagine there would be the same fee. I have unlimited texting included with my cell plan so no charge for me.

OK, I think I get 500 free sms p/m so I should be fine cos I hardly ever use it. Do you get the sms when the payment is sent to the address - or when it arrives in the wallet? I ask because my receiving wallet is not on 24/7, so it would be handy if the sms was sent when the payment is sent.....

I've updated my code for the new 0.11.9 client to the latest Bitcoin sources, including the upcoming BIP65.  If you can compile from source, please give it a try: https://github.com/domob1812/i0coin

I also updated the "temporary" branch: https://github.com/domob1812/i0coin/tree/temporary  If you run this one, you help stabilise the network during the transition period.  You may need to -connect to a node knowingly running the new version (e. g., 51.254.131.226) if you experience problems during syncing.

I'll try to get binaries built in the next days - but if you can compile yourself, any testing helps!

Nice work domob. If anyone has a list of nodes running the "new" client, I will run a "temp" node to help through the transition  Wink

Whew, that was getting ugly.....  Grin

Yeah - let's hope it's a while before we get one of those again. Good to see that the hash rate & miners kept at it though without bailing when luck sucks  Smiley
248  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: verified p2pool shares dropping O.o on: November 02, 2015, 07:20:20 PM
These are not "your" shares - they are shares that are yet to be verified by your node on the p2pool share chain. In order for your node to catch up with verifying the shares in the share chain, you should leave your node running - it will take some time.

Questions about p2pool should ideally be posted in the p2pool thread:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=18313.0

..where they will be answered quicker by someone who is experienced with p2pool  Wink
249  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [1500 TH] p2pool: Decentralized, DoS-resistant, Hop-Proof pool on: November 01, 2015, 09:05:56 PM
was exactly 3 months ago
Sorry for creating confusion with my slightly unclear post at forum.namecoin.info. Actually it was 3 months ago when the miners had the last chance to mine a NMC block using one of the old Namecoin clients. However, there was a p2pool-mined NMC block six weeks ago, and another one five weeks ago. Both using the new Namecoin Core client.

2015-08-02 23:21 UTC, NMC block 242312, mined by ghash.io. This was the last time an old NMC client was able to sucessfully mine a non-orphaned block.
2015-10-13 21:17 UTC, NMC block 253122, mined by p2pool miner 1GqdAgC1zmzLFMg3XyYctSECWUjkbT7Nv9 using the new Namecoin Core client
2015-10-19 05:10 UTC, NMC block 253874, mined by p2pool miner 14N4xNSDtNYatfCgHhyRaAhdZtaczUBnAa using the new Namecoin Core client

Ah! - that's more like it. Thanks for those stats & putting my concerns at rest cassini - phew!  Smiley

Is this due to lack of hashpower in the pool vs others (ie: everyone else is beating us to it) or simply really really bad luck..

I'd say it's a combination of all of those. Long blocks happen on all pools though, large & small, luck is luck  Wink
250  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2015-10-30] Can Fiat Currency And Bitcoin Co-Exist Peacefully? on: November 01, 2015, 08:02:02 PM
"Money" as we know it will become digitalised - it's inevitable. I would rather it be a decentralized system instead of the current setup.

Bitcoin will become the new "money" & the sooner the better.
251  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [1500 TH] p2pool: Decentralized, DoS-resistant, Hop-Proof pool on: November 01, 2015, 07:36:56 PM
Or even more accurately "Does anyone have a best share higher than the current NMC difficulty AND that share did not mine a block?"

I would say probably, yes. But without seeing everyones log it's hard to say. I'm pretty sure that in the months that p2pool users have been using the namecoin-core client for merge mining with p2pool - somebody would have found a valid share & been paid for it......I'd love to hear from that person  Wink

Update on this - I just got the stats through from cassini on the NMC thread - the last NMC block mined by p2pool was exactly 3 months ago, which pretty much matches up with what I thought:

https://forum.namecoin.info/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2371&p=15993#p15993

I think we need to look a little deeper into the namecoin-core code to try & find the cause - only I don't have a clue where to start  Cheesy

Looks like it was 8 and even 12 days before http://p2pool.info/

Do NOT use p2pool.info - it hasn't worked properly for at least 7 months.

Well supposedly I'm getting an S7 - so it would be soon after that if it happens.

Hi kano,

A little birdy told me that Yoshi was going to contact you about the S7 actually - maybe drop him a line to remind him? He does forget things sometimes....  Wink Smiley

Hi kano,

Did you receive your S7 yet - or are you still waiting like the rest of us?  Wink
255  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [1500 TH] p2pool: Decentralized, DoS-resistant, Hop-Proof pool on: November 01, 2015, 11:24:16 AM
Thank you for reply.  Actually I am not expert and I thought that we should find block before (or when) all shares in chain will be verified and found.   For example 2 days ago there was this count in p2pool log file
Code:
2015-10-29 21:21:25.788644 P2Pool: 17367 shares in chain (10488 verified/17371 total)
But for present moment all shares in chain were verified according to log file, what does it mean?

It means your node is still verifying shares - it can take a while if you have recently downloaded the sharechain.

Regarding NMC merge mining - I have posted about my concerns in the NMC forum:

https://forum.namecoin.info/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2371&p=15989#p15989

Hopefully domob or another dev will look into it. In the meantime, if anyone does actually find an NMC block - please report it, thanks.
256  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [1500 TH] p2pool: Decentralized, DoS-resistant, Hop-Proof pool on: October 30, 2015, 07:59:50 PM
Namecoin merge mining works

I'm not so sure, can you confirm you found a block merge mining with the core client & p2pool?

there is no sharechain so it basically solomining

Yes, I'm aware of that.

There haven't been changes to auxpow

There have been many changes to auxpow, see the github page:    https://github.com/namecoin/namecoin-core/tree/auxpow

Again, I'm not saying that there is definitely a problem with merge mining NMC with p2pool, I just want to confirm that there isn't a problem with it, & until someone can report finding a block while merge mining NMC there simply isn't any proof. I find it strange that since the implementation of namecoin-core, nobody has found one. I think it's just too much of a coincidence & want to make sure.

As I said earlier:

I remember that forrestv had to make a few changes to p2pool to accommodate the new code, & am now wondering if maybe there was something we missed?

https://github.com/p2pool/p2pool/issues/270

...yet everyone assumed it was working fine then also, only it wasn't. If we missed something before, we could quite easily have missed something else, either in the NMC code or p2pool (but I suspect NMC tbh, as all my other merge mined coins are working normally).
257  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [1500 TH] p2pool: Decentralized, DoS-resistant, Hop-Proof pool on: October 30, 2015, 04:06:32 PM
Yeah, I found a few NMC blocks myself prior to the code change to the newer core client, but nothing since then, and from what I can see, neither has anyone else. I'm not saying there is definitely a problem with the core client & p2pool - but think it's worth looking into, just in case.
258  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [1500 TH] p2pool: Decentralized, DoS-resistant, Hop-Proof pool on: October 30, 2015, 03:23:54 PM
P2pool hash rate has always been pretty erratic, especially with the luck hunters running around in circles..... Wink

Yeah - I've been using the namecoin-core client since day one, compiled from source, although there are constant updates to the client making it a race to keep up  Cheesy  Interesting that the GUI versions failed to merge mine, I'm curious as to weather this problem persists in the daemon, or is specific with p2pool?

Edit: I remember that forrestv had to make a few changes to p2pool to accommodate the new code, & am now wondering if maybe there was something we missed?

https://github.com/p2pool/p2pool/issues/270

Can anyone else report if they have found an NMC block merge mining with p2pool over the last 2 - 3 months?

Well, as nobody has reported finding any NMC blocks merge mining with the new core client, I'm beginning to think that there is still a problem with the code somewhere that's specific to p2pool, as other centralized pools seem to work fine with it. I'll pop over to the NMC forum & ask domob to maybe have a look into it, just in case.

Ok, how do they get updated QT libs? Apparently I will need to tell them Sad

If they're using Linux - for QT4 it's:

Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libqt4-dev libprotobuf-dev protobuf-compiler

For QT5 it's:

Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libqt5gui5 libqt5core5a libqt5dbus5 qttools5-dev qttools5-dev-tools libprotobuf-dev protobuf-compiler

Not sure why an exchange is using QT though, most exchanges use the daemon only. To compile without the GUI they should use:

Code:
chmod +x autogen.sh
chmod +x share/genbuild.sh
chmod +x src/leveldb/build_detect_platform
./autogen.sh./configure --without-gui
make clean
make
