2  Other / Beginners & Help / any good free pool mining groups? on: February 16, 2012, 12:47:24 PM
or should i stick with the big pools even though they charge a bit.

I do have two gpu's (6950 and 6850) so maybe the other can try a new pool

you can try the flags/settings of other 5970 owners here https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison
some of them get up to 800 mhash/s

as for the alienware laptop, there is a chance of it overheating if you run it 24/7 so maybe only do it a few hours per day.

ps
seriously you have a 6970, try crysis instead of dota Smiley

you could have saved yourself some cash with a single rig.
sell the 2nd rig and just put the 5970 in your first rig and change the psu to a quality 800 watts like thermaltake or corsair.

You can still game with the 6970 while the 5970 is mining

what else will you be using your rig for?

if you'll also do gaming and work on it, id go for two gpus instead of a single 5970.
You can use the 5450 as main gpu for adobe photoshop or watching movies while the 5970 does the mining.

or get two HD5870s. The two can get 600 mhash/s if they will both mine.
But you can play games on one while the other does the mining.

~650MH/s here, maybe 3kb/s being used on average.

ETA: Probably very relevant to note how many mining "threads" are active on the rig. 2, in my case, but Phoenix 2 dumps all the work in the same work queue.

thanks a lot for the quick reply.

I was thinking about this because I have a slow internet connection. only 1mbit Sad
i guess its all right to browse and download while mining if it uses less than 10kb/s

since your board has space for at least 3 cards.
Get a decent card as the dedicated miner/gaming card like HD6870 or faster

Keep your HD5450 because 15 Mhash is not bad for its low power consumption.
make sure you get an ati card because nvidia cards are bad at mining

how much bandwidth is used when mining?
do any of you have an idea?

Let's say 200 mhash/s uses 20kb/s or maybe more?
10  Other / Beginners & Help / A way to limit gpu usage while mining? on: February 15, 2012, 10:05:54 PM
A way to limit gpu usage while mining?

so i can do other things with the gpu like watch movies or even play games.
my HD6850 gets 250 mhash/s but if I can lower it to 100 maybe I can play skyrim at the same time?
