can this be used with steam?

I wish they were, they use their own launchers and patchers from battle.net, however you can start them from steam if you add them as a 3rd party app.   (thats how I have it setup actually)

Cool story bro,

So where are the refunds?

Hopefully they get done soon I think. One of the points outlined today by Tihan was:

"This is what I need from each of you today:

1) A sign of life that the claims processing has begun -- an announcement to that effect and/or actually paying people back

..."

So things are moving forwards now after the hiatus. Most people involved are in agreement on what needs to be done.

would it be possible for you to reply to our emails and let us know if we need any additional information to proceed with the claims? I have sent in a ton of paperwork but I'm not sure if anything else is needed or not.

Since nobody seems to be reading the verify@bitcoinica emails I agree with Kokjo and kindly remind you to send me my 101 BTC  to: 1ET2ps7BRrZnDeq7bVNc8bS9ZmgN8DxUXy   - consider the BTC pocket change you owe me and my 3 cents USD a going away gift.

I respectfully do not care who pays for it, and this is not a trivial amount to me. You're not the only one with tuition fees to pay.

Afterwards, I promise to stop asking you on this forum for what is rightfully mine. Thank you.
You speculated with tuition money (money you cannot afford to lose), and did so on a bucket shop built in 4 days by a 17yo that was hacked 2 times before this? D00d. Even though I am quite sure people will get back their funds, I don’t feel sorry for the prospect of anyone possibly losing money on this because noone should have left any non-expendable money there.

People need to do a bit more due diligence on the businesses they leave their BTC with.

I do not think that is quite fair. I'm on vacation right now and while I don't need my money instantly, I would very much like it as the amount I had goes a long way where I am. I had budgeted with the expectation that I would have access to that money and now my budget has changed.

Yes, I was speculating and yes I was prepared to lose some of it through speculation (through stops/limits), but the idea that I would have no access to my money with this kind of silence from everyone but Zhou (who is the only one talking to us, even though he has no control) is surprising, given that this is a registered corporation. This isn't bitscalper or that anonymous wallet service from a year or so ago. This is a corporation, with real people behind it that are operating in a regulated fashion. This is not how they should behave and to be surprised by this and to say the amount you had in there was not trivial is legitimate.

On the plus side, I still feel a degree of comfort that we'll get at least some of our money back, due to this being a legal and regulated entity. The question is when, and I don't know enough about corporate law in NZ to know that.

Your post pretty much proves you have no clue about, or were neglecting willfully, counter party risk.

Expecting your counter party to not go bust is speculation too, especially in this case after a history of previous theft. Also in this case a registered limited partnership is probably a better shield to the limited partner than you, but I have no clue about NZ law.

I hope you and we all get some of our money back in time.

My point wasn't that there was NO risk, but that Bitcoinica was, on paper, one of the safest and most legitimate bitcoin companies to store BTC or USD with. To be surprised by the lack of professional response now doesn't make you stupid or naive. Of course they could go bust or be subject to an attack; that part isn't surprising. The neglect they're displaying towards their customers, given that they had a brand that survived past attacks and have the funds to compensate us ready is what is surprising.

Having USD in a company like that isn't as safe as having it in a bank, but in terms of counter party risk, it was about as good as it got when it came to BTC. They do have a legal obligation to us; they are not anonymous. It is entirely legitimate to be more upset and surprised about this current behavior than with anonymous e-wallets or fly-by-night exchanges. That is all I'm getting at. People who are upset have a right to be and it is sad seeing keyboard warriors tell them they should have done more due diligence about where they put their BTC. Hindsight is 20/20, right?

When Zhou says he hates seeing his brand ruined, I have to agree. We will probably all get our money back, but this present behavior is unacceptable.

+1

03 June 2012 23:20: We're adding extra fields to the claims database (should be finished soon), we have received the funds from Tihan to make the initial payouts. Then once that's done, the first round of payments can be finished.

That's a bit confusing.  If all that was lost was 20% of Bitcoins on hand it should have been possible to pay everyone out 80% (the initial round of payouts) without receiving funds from Tihan - additional capital should only have been required to replace the lost Bitcoins.  You should have still been in possession of 100% of USD and 100% of Mt Gox deposits.  Or were you still waiting on capital to enable you to replace Bitcoins which were lost in the Linode intrusion as well as additional funds to cover the most recent loss?

We don't hold the funds.

Do you mean there will be another claim form to fill out, or are you just speaking about finalizing the current one?

Finalising the current one for internal (staff) usage. We need to track the payments we make more accurately for book keeping.

sounds good genjix, let us know if theres anything else we need to fill out, I have some stuff I want to buy D:

I've sent numerous emails to verify@bitcoinica.com and still never received one single reply.

No answer to my question on the status of my claim, which is completely in USD. No reply whatsoever. Is anyone actually reading the mail there? Because it seems like no one else has received a response either.

I don't think thats a reply to inbox, iirc they use it to match email+claim and nothing else.
387  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Does anyone get the money back from Bitcoinica? on: June 02, 2012, 02:23:03 PM

This is what I think of when I think of the people who put money back into bitcoinica after the initial fiasco. Not a lot of sympathy really. Some, but not a lot. Learn your lesson.

I never heard about the first bitcoinica fiasco, never lost any money in the first "break in", therefore its kind of hard to make a case for it for me Cheesy

About email: not everyone appreciates constant small updates sent to their inbox. However once we are ready to move forwards, a mass email will be sent detailing everything.

for future reference, when its about peoples money that they have been waiting for desperately for almost a month, a few emails once or twice a day are nowhere close to annoying, more like critical.
391  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [Payout Updates] Bitcoinica site is taken offline for security investigation on: May 30, 2012, 10:11:42 PM
Smacks like favoritism to me.
If it makes you feel better, what Bitcoinica is doing is essentially issuing loans to people that are backed by their reputation. Anyone that doesn't have a reputation can't really be trusted to pay them back if Bitcoinica over-pays them.

And in case you were wondering, anyone who refuses to pay Bitcoinica back if they ask because Bitcoinica believes that you are owed less than you were paid will almost certainly get a scammer tag here. Please keep that in mind.

good call maged, hopefully this helps move things along.

Define 'A high rating in the community'

...

Smacks like favoritism to me.

You're totally right.

if you guys would like wire transfer numbers I have mine somewhere for nearly the exact amount in my account (minus fees), if that helps speed up the process I'll gladly send that along.

If you have anything that can help, then email verify@bitcoinica.com

There's an internal system being used to collate and organise all this information.

sent a couple emails there asking if they want any info that I have, I thought it was a standard email instead of a database, I'll send the AML files along then.

Were they given preferential treatment?

Yes. People with a high rating within the community. These people are having their process expedited.

Originally Zhou favoured simply paying people out based on reputation (trust-based approach) whereas we (me and Patrick) supported divvying funds up accordingly among people (pro-rata). That was the nature of the disagreement and why Zhou was saying he could do immediate payouts quickly if we handed over the process. We did not think this was fair despite people calling for him to handle the process. The final method that's been mutually agreed upon by all is a hybrid method - using both approaches.

That's why I said one method is fast but inaccurate, while the other is slower but more accurate. It's a difficult decision though. And despite the criticism, I'm going to perform the payouts in the way that I personally think is most fair for all. There are a lot of people on this forum who don't have a voice so it would be unfair to simply payout to people based on reputation alone.

excellent, please keep this thread updated, I'm checking it twice a day at least.

if you guys would like wire transfer numbers I have mine somewhere for nearly the exact amount in my account (minus fees), if that helps speed up the process I'll gladly send that along.

EDIT: and to be honest, all the people crying over favoritism, what did you expect? Hes saying they now have a system in place to pay everyone back, thats better than where we were this morning.

for what it is worth mtgox code would be great for me to get my funds. thank you

same here, thats what I requested right after I filed my claims aha
395  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [Payout Updates] Bitcoinica site is taken offline for security investigation on: May 29, 2012, 08:07:42 PM
I put in the basic claim based on my vague memory of what I had in there - I was waiting for something more. An email or something.

Same here, haven't seen any response to indicate that the claim was received and / or status.

I'm hoping that any announcements posted on the forum would also be sent out to the e-mail addresses from the claims.

as their rackspace was sideways hacked by resetting the password for admin via email, I'd assume they would be somewhat scared of using their old email accounts for verification or mailing lists, but then I guess the damage is done already isn't it?

Site note:

You can safely delete Bitcoinica from your Google Authenticator app.

The GA keys were stored in plain text, so we can't use it as an authentication method. In OTP authentication, we have to use the same key that was added to your smartphone to verify your OTP.
'

zhou, is there any way to get updated information on the progression of these claims without having to sift through this forum thread every few hours?
397  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Does anyone get the money back from Bitcoinica? on: May 23, 2012, 03:27:16 AM
read around, were all in the same boat. I'm hoping that they will reimburse us, but at this point I'm starting to get worried that I may never see my precious dollars again.
398  Bitcoin / Legal / Class Action Lawsuit vs. Bitcoinica for USD funds on: May 22, 2012, 12:59:22 PM
As per the title, I'm interested in possibly setting up a class action lawsuit against bitcoinica for both the return of our USD funds (bitcoins would never hold up in court as currency I imagine), however I think we would have a very strong case in taking our funds back, as well as receiving punitive damages for the in-access of our funds for what, 3 weeks?

Its been 7 days since the last official report from the bitcoinica consultancy, This is a short amount of time so I would give them some time to come up with something substantial for their next report, however it has been 11 days since the breach, I'd give them a full month to return the funds before any legal action is given, but its up to you guys what you think.

And before you guys ask, I have 5k USD in bitcoinica right now, I assume there are a few with quite a bit more, let me know your thoughts on the matter.
399  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [Emergency ANN] Bitcoinica site is taken offline for security investigation on: May 22, 2012, 12:49:29 PM
The silence is deafening. I had a hundred sitting with bitcoinica and I would like to get it back.

I have 5000, its not just you.
400  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [Emergency ANN] Bitcoinica site is taken offline for security investigation on: May 17, 2012, 02:11:54 PM
Ok, easy fix for you intersango/zhou.

Convert all the btc to mtgox codes, I know how much you guys love your precious btc and would hate to see it converted to dollars, but this is serious, if you have the same amount of money locked up in bitcoinica like I do, I'm going to assume you feel the same way.
Get rid of most of your website, its going in the trash anyways, no ereason to leave things that can be exploited, however keep the login system.

When person A logs in, give them a mtgox code for the valuation of their account in USD, and then your done, no fancy anti-theft bullshit, just take the site down and facilitate our refunds.

You guys have been pussy footing around for almost an entire week (including the weekends, since I'm going to make the guess that you didn't just take the weekend off after something like this happening.)

If you were a legitimate brick and mortar company, you would have been sued PER DAY that you have not allowed our funds to be withdrawn, now i'm not advocating this, but a certain level of professionalism is what I'd expect from a multi million dollar financial institution (based in the US I might add.)

Now I know a few of you are going to get angry at me over being angry, but I'll make a bet the people angry at me are the ones with next to nothing in their bitcoinica account.
