641  Economy / Economics / Re: Why do people rush in to buy things when rates are about to be lowered? on: December 15, 2023, 03:32:00 PM
~snip~
So basically, why is people buying, if with 100% of certainty, this has been working since the 2000? Shouldn't you be considering a scenario where prices will be lower?

In the title you say "things", and I assume you mean goods and services and not Bitcoin? I think that when it comes to some basic needs and a little more than that, we cannot expect people to refrain from spending money and buying something even if they know that in x months the same thing or service will be xx% cheaper.

No one can wait to buy gifts for the Christmas and New Year holidays, or to repair a leaking roof - but they could definitely think about it when it comes to buying a new car or some expensive device.

In that case, how would BTC perform? Will it successfully decouple from the markets, or is it going to mimick SP500 and just crash harder? Will the ETF hype + halving be enough to counteract these dynamics?

I believe that the next year is specific because of the halving and the possible approval of the spot ETF, so I personally expect that the price of Bitcoin will achieve a new ATH considering that this year (so far) we have had a growth of over 100%. Taking that into account, I believe that $80k to $100k by the end of next year is a realistic price to expect, even if the spot ETF is not approved.
642  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Quickest way to earn merit? on: December 15, 2023, 03:00:04 PM
I'm new here. What's all about this merit count? How is it earned? I'm assuming it's linked to the quality/usefulness of your posts/replies? Their originality maybe? What are usually the subjects you'd get the more merit for posting about?

Somehow it seems to me that your statement is not correct, because it seems that you are an alt of someone who knows the forum very well and is technically very well versed when it comes to Bitcoin.

I feel like he was trying to sarcasm, he create a good topic in technical discussion and earn many merits in one thread, so I'd say he's not really a newbie. But there's no rule of having alt accounts, I'm not saying @OP was wrong or make a mistake.

I'm glad that someone else noticed (or at least publicly admitted that they had doubts). Alts are not against the forum rules, but some of the other things done with them definitely are. In any case, it will be interesting to see in which direction this "newbie" will go.
643  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin community are in support of BRC20 on: December 15, 2023, 11:37:18 AM
@Oshosondy, I agree with you in one part, because although some object to what is happening and say that something should be done, I think that the majority who are only interested in profit have nothing against all this. Some of them will easily say that you should use some altcoins and thus avoid big fees, because Bitcoin is not what it was in the beginning anyway.

Some others say that any prohibition of these transactions would be a form of some kind of censorship, which would later open the possibility of censoring individual transactions, as if some mining pools do not already do this or have not already tried to go in that direction.

Read this topic and maybe some things will be clearer to you.
644  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Beware of Clipboard Virus! on: December 15, 2023, 11:18:20 AM
@DYING_S0UL, I remembered one "trick" that might help you speed up your computer, because even though you have 8 GB of RAM and you say that it still works slowly, you can try to stop a W10 feature called (SysMain (Superfetch)) which actually preloads those apps that you use it most often, so it can take up a lot of RAM.

All you need is to follow the instructions on the link and first stop that process, and then disable it from starting automatically with the OS. In case you need this feature again, you can simply turn it on.

Quote
Superfetch was introduced with Windows Vista and it's now known as SysMain on the latest versions of Windows 10 and 11. This Windows service runs in the background and analyzes your PC usage.
Based on your usage, the service determines what apps you're most likely to use. Then, it preloads those apps in your PC's RAM so you can open those apps quickly. In other words, this service speeds up the launching of the most used apps on your PC.

645  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why do we spam on: December 14, 2023, 04:29:07 PM
Mods rarely if ever delete one-liners, posts that add nothing to the conversation or posts with grammar so poor that they are incomprehensible. So many users have given up on reporting anything that is not advertisement spam with links or completely off-topic.

I think that the status of our reports depends on at least two factors, the first of which is our assessment of whether something is spam, and the way we report it. The post can be reported as spam, signature spam, low value post, repetitive content - and it is always necessary to provide as much information (links) as possible in the report. Another thing we have to keep in mind is the fact that not all mods have the same opinion about the same thing, which means that some will delete a reported post, while others may mark it as a "bad report".

And you are right, the motivation behind spam doesn't matter, because we can't change it. Strict moderation is the only solution - those who would get banned once or twice would be more careful or would just leave the forum.

I agree, from personal experience I can say that week after week I report posts by the same members who spam one and the same thing, and they are still active, which is definitely something that should not be allowed. Such things can definitely be very discouraging for all those who want to do something good for the forum, so it can seem to them that they are really just wasting their time.
646  Other / Meta / Re: Second chances on: December 14, 2023, 02:57:51 PM
~snip~
I am surprised the thread has not been flooded with applications.

I am not the least bit surprised, because those who have been banned for a long time have already come to terms with it and will certainly not even know about this opportunity. In addition, there are certain conditions under which these accounts could be returned to their owners, and the signature ban makes them quite worthless for most of them.
647  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Data Harvesting Inside Ledger Live App - Is this really part of Non-custodial? on: December 14, 2023, 12:01:16 PM
The best option for those who have a Ledger wallet and are worried about data harvesting, is just to use another software.
~snip~

There is no doubt about that, but still from time to time you can't avoid using LL, at least when it comes to things like updating or adding a coin app, or maybe when it comes to a firmware upgrade. I turned off that questionable option a long time ago because I have a habit of checking such things, but this is a good warning for all those who haven't done it yet or are about to install LL.

Uhm...  what about the key extraction code that's not built into the firmware?

Maybe that code has always existed, only recently they decided to tell us about it because they want to charge us for a service that has a direct connection with that code.

I seriously do not understand why anyone is trusting Ledger at this point.  What ever happened to the days of Bitcoiners saying "Don't trust.  Verify."  Now, it seems to be "Don't trust, unless the company's CEO wears at least nine rings while defending key extraction firmware.  Nine rings or more makes it okay."

Some actually have no idea what it's all about, some others simply can't afford another HW, others think that the recovery option is actually something that gives them greater security. Besides, how many people actually understand Bitcoin as more than a get-rich-quick scheme? If so many believe in CEX as a crypto bank, it's no wonder that they still trust the company that allowed it to be hacked (data leak) and then came up with the idea of enabling seed extraction and sharing the same with third parties.

There are only three safe uses for a Ledger:

Door stop.
Target practice.
Decoy wallet.

I agree, and maybe someone could think of another way to use it - I know that some have managed to install a simple game on Ledger in the past🐍
648  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Secure on holding my btc on electrum on: December 13, 2023, 03:18:06 PM
If someone, for whatever reason, does not have the possibility to buy a hardware wallet or does not have the possibility to make an airgapped wallet, and plans to store a large amount of BTC in Electrum, I would advise the following.

  • First, make sure that there is no virus/malware on the computer by scanning it with a good AV.
  • Then following the instructions that have already been posted in previous posts, download Electrum from the official site and verify it before installation.
  • As a third step, go offline and install Electrum following the necessary steps, noting that you can add an additional word (passphrase) to the 12-word seed and enter a strong unique password of at least 10+ characters.
  • Then we will find something called extended public key (xpub) with which we will create something called watch only wallet, which has all the functionality of your main wallet, but without the possibility of outgoing transactions.
  • When you are sure that you have saved the seed and password safely (as well as the passphrase if you decide to use it), you can delete your main wallet.
  • Now you can use your watch only wallet for all incoming transactions without fear that someone will hack you, which is ideal for all those who want to invest in the long term.

649  Other / Meta / Re: Forum unusable with Tor on: December 13, 2023, 02:47:48 PM
At least you could go to the login page where I couldn't even connect to TOR let alone visit bitcointalk. I don't know why but for some reasons TOR is acting weirdly. It won't even connect from my side when everything else seems to be working fine. Tried switching bridge and changing options it doesn't work. Maybe something from windows update causing this. Better to use a paid reliable VPN for temporary if privacy is your first priority.

The only thing that comes to my mind is that maybe your country (ISP) blocks publicly known bridges, and the only way to get around that is to request a private bridge by going to "Settings - Request a bridge from torproject.org". As for VPN, regardless of whether it is free or paid, you should keep in mind that the level of privacy between VPN and Tor cannot be compared, the latter is a completely different level of privacy (in a positive sense of course).

Am I missing something? I thought APAC stands for Asia Pacific, which is a pretty big region, right? It goes from China in the north all the way to New Zealand in the south. So why Cambodia?

I'm pretty sure @BitcoinGirl.Club is just kidding - in any case Cambodia is a better choice than NK Wink
650  Other / Meta / Re: Forum unusable with Tor on: December 13, 2023, 11:52:20 AM
Yes, i also experience this problem. But there's no problem when i try to access different website using Tor. I'd guess something wrong on CloudFlare or CloudFlare configuration made by admin.
~snip~

You are right, it seems that the entire APAC region is affected and CF is working on fixing the problem.

Investigating - Customers may see degraded R2 performance in the APAC region. Impacted customers will see slower uploads and downloads.

651  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Can you recommend a web wallet other than blockchain.info? No KYC on: December 13, 2023, 11:38:01 AM
Can you recommend a web wallet other than blockchain.info for bitcoin primarily and with no kyc (no id). Thanks in advance

Why were blockchain.com, and bitpay booted out of bitcoin.org? What web wallets do you recommend other than those on that list there?

OP is still looking, even after 5 years the same question bothers him Roll Eyes

For those who wonder why and give him suggestions to use a non-custodial desktop wallet, I can say that he is already familiar with Electrum, which he used, but some things were obviously not clear to him then, and it seems not even today. I just hope that in his search (if it's true at all) he won't find that online wallet that has "free" in its name, and because of which many were left without their coins.
652  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Data Harvesting Inside Ledger Live App - Is this really part of Non-custodial? on: December 13, 2023, 11:15:29 AM
Someone already shared that news here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5469941.msg63308706#msg63308706

It's nothing strange to me, considering that various apps have an "analytics" option that collects data about how the user uses the app and a lot more that the company wants to know. The real problem is that this option is turned on by default, and those who are not aware that it exists at all are not aware that they can turn it off.

However, even if the user turns off that option, can we say with certainty that the app still does not (secretly) collect data and send it to someone for analysis?
653  Economy / Speculation / Re: BTC Sentiment Poll for December on: December 13, 2023, 10:48:05 AM
@bbc.reporter, I have no idea who this person is that you mention in your posts, but I assume that he has some influence on the people who follow him on social networks. However, you should not give too much credit to anyone for correctly predicting something, because considering that we are not in a big bull run, it is quite realistic to expect that corrections will occur after every major pump and that those who understand the market can make a lot of money from it.

In addition, December is the month of the year when people usually spend the most, and there should be no doubt that many have already taken part of the profit, which in the case of Bitcoin amounted to more than 100% compared to the beginning of the year. This is why we see that the supply is greater than the demand, and we can assume that this trend will continue until the end of the year.

Why do we spam

Does it matter at all? The more important question for me is "why do most forum members not respond to spam?" If everyone were to report at least 5 posts they consider spam every day, it would quickly become clear to most spammers that such a method of communication is not worth it.
655  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: The coin mixer advertised here stole my coins on: December 12, 2023, 04:57:51 PM
The minimum limit for this mixer is 0.003 BTC, which is equal to $125.71 at current prices. It is a little high. I tried to mix and there is actually no warning about the minimum. Have you downloaded the letter of guarantee?
~snip~

The FAQ has very clear instructions on what the minimum amount is and the OP should have just read it - but these new generations think reading is a waste of time and then accuse someone of scamming them out of the entire $7 Roll Eyes

In addition, why would someone want to mix such a small amount - especially if we take into account that these days, in some moments, the fee for confirmation in the next block amounts to more than that amount. In other words, to refund such a small amount would mean that the mixer has to pay out of his own pocket because someone failed to read the FAQ.

Quote
What amounts do you accept for cleaning?
The minimum amount to clear is 0.003 BTC, the maximum is 50 BTC. If you need to clear a large amount, you can do it in several transactions, or contact the operator directly, we will definitely find a solution.
656  Economy / Speculation / Re: Coinbase App Store rank as a market top indicator on: December 12, 2023, 04:33:36 PM
I can agree that it makes sense for someone to consider the number of downloads as some kind of indicator that retail customers are becoming more active, but all of these people are very likely not familiar with the risks that arise from trading and storing cryptocurrencies on smartphones.

If we assume that most people will keep what they buy on their "smart devices" and that the app doesn't have great ratings (at least when it comes to the Android version), it can be concluded that there will be a lot of disappointed users in one way or another.
657  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Nobody is above the law on: December 12, 2023, 03:49:30 PM
As for laws in general, in real life they are also very selective and do not apply to everyone in the same way. If by any chance the laws apply equally to everyone, the world will be a much better place than it is.
Thank you Lucius for saying it as it is.
Some people are not per say above the law but based on their reputation they community looks the other way.
~snip~

The truth should be told, no matter that someone may not like it - but it is better to face the facts in time, than to live in delusion. This forum is for the most part just a copy of real life, with some minor differences that are specific to the online world. Some would say that you shouldn't play the game if you don't know the rules, and others that the rules can always be adjusted if you have the knowledge and skills, and of course a good reputation Wink
658  Other / Off-topic / Re: I'll Pray for You ... on: December 12, 2023, 12:05:43 PM
If you're a Christian, be sure that you have told God about that need on a personal level before posting it here.
~snip~

Every Christian knows that the most effective prayer is the one that comes from himself, and not looking for an intermediary who will say prayers on his behalf. If you already want to do good deeds, then you can pray for all those who suffer in any way, and they are all over the world.

It is even better if you start doing good deeds along with prayers, because words are just words and will not feed the hungry or heal the sick.
659  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Hardware Wallets Reviews on: December 12, 2023, 11:35:03 AM
~snip~
Coming back to  your text " you should leave that to professional who knows what they are doing "  I don't think I get this statement, what's the professional part just asking

I wanted to say that maybe you are not up to the task, but also considering that what you want to do already exists, the only way to succeed in it is to do something better. There are dozens of topics dedicated to various HW with reviews from hundreds of users, which means that everyone who follows this board knows what they need to know.
660  Other / Meta / Re: Second chances on: December 12, 2023, 11:11:16 AM
I think that in most cases people deserve a second chance, but I also think that most of those who were banned for plagiarism, and in some way were of value to the forum, have already received their second chance. If by any chance someone got lost in all this, then this is a good opportunity to show that they want a second chance, so good luck to everyone who got banned.

I know it's OT, but what about all these members who persistently use AI for their posts and at best their posts get deleted but they don't get any sanctions? Can the forum finally equate such posts with plagiarism and send a clear message that this is not something that will be tolerated on the forum?
