801  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Javier Milei just won the presidentiial election in Argentina on: November 21, 2023, 12:03:46 PM
I'm trying to be unbiased here and I don't expect miracles, but would you rather have someone from the other side of the political spectrum? Someone like Legarde in Europe or Warren in the US?

It makes no sense to compare the president of the European Central Bank or a famous US investor with the president of a country because their roles in society are completely different. Regardless of Lagarde's attitudes towards Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in general, in many countries of the European Union there are perhaps the most liberal laws when it comes to cryptocurrencies when it comes to taxes and the legality of using them.

As for WB, he is simply a 90-year-old man who has spent his whole life doing what he knows best, and this obsession of people that he should accept Bitcoin is really ridiculous and only exists for the reason that people want him to have a positive effect on the price BTC.

~snip~
However, I have serious doubts about his leadership qualities. He's perhaps not necessarily a bad person but a choleric guy who often got very ideologic in his discussions with other politicians and journalists (like in the tweet you linked), and has some very excentric esoteric beliefs (e.g. he believes his deceased pet dog Conan sends him messages from Heaven). But if he wants to solve the country's problems he will have to unite experts from several backgrounds and needs talent to negotiate, also because he doesn't have much seats in Parliament (only about 15% of deputy chamber and Senate seats).

Obviously, your compatriots think that everything has gone to hell, so they gave such a man a chance, and when everything is taken into account, there is not much logic in hoping that he, as president, will change something, especially when you add to that information that is very important, and that is that there are only about 15% of those he can count on in the parliament. Those who try to compare him with Bukele may not be aware that his party has a majority in parliament, and therefore all his decisions are easily implemented.

And Milei has even promoted a crypto ponzi scam in the past (CoinX). So we could say it's the first time a possible crypto scammer became president? Grin
At least these episodes clearly cast a shadow over his intentions.

Crypto scammer president is a very interesting title, so although it may not be the first, it could definitely be one of the most famous. Such news certainly cannot be encouraging, but regardless of everything we know about the president, I say that he was elected by the people, and they will be witnesses to his actions in the years to come.
802  Economy / Economics / Re: when the rich say 'ill give 95% of my billion away over my lifetime' explained on: November 21, 2023, 11:19:02 AM
If someone has $200 billion (regardless of how he earned it), why do millions of people admire him, and at the same time struggle to survive from month to month? If that person wants to be a great man, let him distribute 90% of his wealth to the poor and make a difference in the world, and he will still be an extremely rich man.
Humans admire successful people. It's a natural instinct.
I do not think a wealthy person needs to give up a chunk of there wealth to be great.

I don't admire those people, nor would I ever want to be in their shoes, because I'm pretty sure that most of them are not happy people who wake up in the morning without a twinge of conscience that with their way of life make the world the way it is today. People who consider it a success in my opinion have a big problem in distinguishing the good from the bad.

I think that these rich individuals should not give anything and show themselves to the world that they are better than they are, because the facts speak for themselves. Anyone who thinks they need billions of dollars to be happy and successful while at the same time half of humanity is literally starving and has no basic medical care is to me personally someone to be despised not admired.
803  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Germany's fourth largest bank "Commerzbank" Granted Bitcoin Custody Licence. on: November 21, 2023, 11:02:12 AM
Should we really be thrilled because a bank has been licensed to literally become a "crypto bank"? After years of warning that CEXs are not a place to store cryptocurrencies, are we going to get another weak link in the chain?
It seems that a new era is coming, in which people will buy shitcoins and then store them in banks, and they will of course pay for this service. That will surely "end well" Roll Eyes

Well, actually, what this is going to facilitate is that my aunty, who used to buy only government bonds and some funds recommended by the bank, can end up buying Bitcoin and storing it there, because there is no way she is going to buy a HW, set up seeds and make transactions autonomously.

This is the catch-22 situation we have been in for years now. Everything that helps to popularize Bitcoin and mass adoption, moves it away from a P2P use outside of banks and states
.

I agree with you here, because most people who have heard about Bitcoin still think that there are some elements of ponzi schemes and internet fraud, and in the event that it appears as something that banks trust, they might change their opinion. So, on the one hand, people might start to look at BTC as something positive, but on the other hand, if we take into account the custody service and the risks of the same, and the fact that everyone who invests in BTC in that way actually supports it only as an investment, and not as currency.

When you mention hardware wallets, the recovery service that was designed by guys from France is based on the same idea, to help their mothers and grandmothers use cryptocurrencies more easily by sharing their seeds with everyone and everything because they will most likely lose them. In my opinion, all these ideas promoted by various "crypto geniuses" such as Ledger, CZ, or in the specific case banks, go in the direction of telling the average person that he is too stupid to be his own bank and that someone should still be trusted to keep confidential information for him.

~snip~
People still consider banks as their most trusted place to store their money.

Banks have been building this trust for a very long time, so people trust them for that reason - but most people also simply do not see an alternative to banks and actually have no choice but to trust them, even if they have a bad opinion of them. Banks are, of course, much simpler and, from a security point of view, more favorable for the average person, and of course they have insurance even when someone robs them, or when someone steals your bank card and spends everything from your account.

Does anyone around them see the changes caused by the fact that the richest people in the world give money to charity? I just see that ordinary people have less and less, and that those who call themselves philanthropists have more and more - and naive people admire them because they throw crumbs from their table. I can't call it anything other than calming their conscience, because deep down they know that all the wealth they have accumulated has denied many people a normal life.

~snip~
In the last bull run, some people commit suicide when they loss their funds and when some of them where victim of scams. It's advisable to invest in the amount you know it will not hurt you if anything should happen in the end, always consider this before you take that money to any coin.

It's not just a matter of the invested amount, but also of the fact that a large percentage of people who invest in cryptocurrencies have no idea what they're actually doing, and any investment of this type is just an even bigger risk than what already exists in itself.
Unfortunately, such things will continue to happen, people are simply too naive and do not have the knowledge and discipline to be successful - and their loss is only someone's gain, which results in the fact that we have very few rich and very many poor people.

~snip~
People that are saying bitcoin will go to $1M are all speculators and are just hoping it happens, nothing is guaranteed here, just be prepared and hope for the best.

Maybe one day that speculation will become reality, but that $1 million will definitely have far less purchasing power than it is the case today. In addition, if people already want profit (and most want it as soon as possible), then they should focus more on some goals that can be achieved in the next few years.

This news is really good news for bitcoin investors in Argentina but what you said is not wrong.
~snip~

Let the members from Argentina not get angry, but from everything that I had the opportunity to see about their new president, I can only say that after the circus that he will create in his term in that country, it will be even worse than it is today. To me, he looks like some psychotic maniac who lives in some parallel universe where it is normal to wave chainsaws in the sense that he will cut everything that can be cut, and then by some miracle everything will fix itself.

Is this someone who looks like someone who should be the president of one of the biggest countries in the world? I wonder where this world is going and what people are thinking about when they go to the elections.

808  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: [SCAM] Fake transaction accelerator that requires typing your seed phrase!!! on: November 20, 2023, 11:39:58 AM
For those who value privacy, this is not an easy task - because they either get an error when loading the page or fall into an endless loop of re-captcha.
You're right... I should've added their abuse contact email [abuse@godaddy.com] for those who'd like to directly send a report by using a disposable/throwaway email in order to stay under the radar [my bad].
~snip~

I think it's about the fact that on the first link the re-captcha is set to maximum difficulty and I didn't manage to pass it even after 30+ attempts, while Google phishing also has the same captcha which (at least for me) was very easy solvable. However, as I can see, the page is still available, which only means that someone on the other side does not take things like this seriously, or there simply aren't enough people who deal with things like this.
809  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Javier Milei just won the presidentiial election in Argentina on: November 20, 2023, 11:27:28 AM
I don't know why there is so much excitement over the fact that this man became the president of Argentina, unless someone thinks that the country is a dictatorial state where one man will decide everything? Does he have any kind of power at all or is this function reduced to protocol activities (as in many other countries)?

Even if by some chance he has absolute power and declares Bitcoin to be legal tender, for a country that is in such an economic crisis, nothing important will change because Bitcoin is only a cryptocurrency, not a recipe for solving decades of bad work by corrupt and incompetent politicians.

We have already had discussions on the same topic ->

810  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: [SCAM] Fake transaction accelerator that requires typing your seed phrase!!! on: November 19, 2023, 03:41:44 PM
They created a fake site and ranked on Google, was it that easy? These guys are master at scamming for sure. But I wonder how many people will give the seed phrase knowing that's the only thing a scammer needs to empty a wallet.
Good catch!

I would not agree, it is the work of an amateur who does not know that a seed can have more than 12 words, and also that there is something called a "private key". Some more serious "hacker" would make a little more effort and expand the base of possible users.

811  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The PATRIOT Act comes to cryptocurrency on: November 19, 2023, 03:20:01 PM
Agreed, it is nothing new and all these allegations of terrorist funding are only allegations without attempting to back them with proof. Also, Chainalysis has already declared that terrorist funding through the use of bitcoin has been overstated. However, my argument is this will not stop the government and the mainstream media from using terrorist funding as their next big storyline to make everyone fearful. Fud has always been something the government uses to trick ignorant people into supporting their oppressive campaigns very much similar to the war on drugs scam.

I really wonder how those who claim that terrorism is financed with Bitcoin react when the company whose services they use tells them that this is not the case? The problem is that the average politician usually knows about the term "cryptocurrency", where he puts Bitcoin and all altcoins in the same basket, and demands the same sanctions for all.

I remember that there was a lot of talk about how the cartels use Bitcoin to smuggle drugs from South America more easily, although even today, as in the time of Escobar, the vast majority still use the good old US$, which is of course much safer than Bitcoin transactions (of course when it comes to anonymity).
812  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2023-11-14] If you created a wallet before 2016, your money may be at risk on: November 19, 2023, 02:56:21 PM
Thank you for this. I was too lazy to read all that text and was looking for the short version.  Cheesy

To be honest with you, I read until I reached the link where you can supposedly check the vulnerability of the wallet, and then I gave up when I saw what it was actually about - and if you look at what the OP has in his signature, it's a bit strange that he shares links that are classic collectors of personal data that can then be used for malicious purposes.

Yep, web based wallet code was said far too many times it's insecure. And far too many people didn't read or didn't care. I don't expect OP's wall of text will change anything in this.

Over the years, I've read a lot of cases where people's coins literally disappeared from exactly such wallets, and mostly it was about the blockchain.com page - and mostly the first conclusion was that someone became a victim of phishing or stored their seed incorrectly, but obviously there were vulnerabilities that someone managed to exploit.

I recently received a notification from one such online service that I created a little less than 10 years ago, warning me not to use that wallet anymore, but luckily I stopped using it a long time ago.
813  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: ⚽ UEFA Euro 2024 in Germany ⚽ - Qualifiers on: November 19, 2023, 12:30:45 PM
Wales lost points in the match with Armenia, just a draw and now their chances of reaching the playoffs are becoming very low, and Croatia beats Latvia and goes into second place. Now all they have to do is beat Armenia at home to keep their place, now again everything depends only on them. Under favorable conditions, if Wales can beat Turkey, Croatia could even come out on top, but I doubt Turkey will lose this match.

Armenia is a tough nut to crack, but I still expected more from Wales, who showed an excellent game against Croatia at home, although it must be admitted that Croatia has been playing quite poorly lately, which is largely due to the absence of some important players. Although Croatia defeated the nominally weakest opponent in the group last night, the game they showed is far from what we have seen before and they will have to play much better against Armenia if they want to go directly to the European Championship.

Maybe Croatia's bad games has something to do with the fact that they know that even third place in the group does not mean the end, but additional qualifications in March next year. In any case, it will be interesting in a few days against Armenia, and everything could be further complicated by the bad weather, because rain and relatively low temperatures are forecast.
814  Economy / Speculation / Re: What will SEC delay on Spot ETF approval do to Bitcoin's price?@ on: November 19, 2023, 12:19:05 PM
I am not sure if all of us are aware of not as SEC has delayed their decisions on Spot ETF application but they were supposed to take the decision by now and will this delay cause any set back in price ?

The SEC has 240 days to make its final decision from the moment a company formally submits such a request and it is officially accepted. I don't know why you (and many others) think that this time should be different and that the SEC will not use its legal right to postpone the decision until the last minute?

People were speculating that there would be a price drop before halving and that didn't happened due to ETF as it helped increasing the value and since it's been delayed now will it cause any impact for the Bitcoin price? if yes then how much would it be and will it be that way till halving?

People speculate, but do they even know when the halving is and what it means before the halving? There are still at least 4+ months until the halving, and during that period anything can happen - and that includes a price change in any direction. You should not look at the current price as something that is only the result of waiting for spot ETF approval, but also as a pre-halving period in which the accumulation is increasing more and more because people who invest in Bitcoin still think that the halving will have a positive effect and result in new bull run.
815  Economy / Economics / Re: When Was the Last Time you Came Across a Positive Economic News? on: November 19, 2023, 11:53:35 AM
I find myself pretty bothered by everything going on in the world. Have you ever noticed how it's so hard to come across positive news about the economy, whether it's in our own country or globally? It's genuinely disheartening. Every time we read, watch, or discuss something related to the economy, it's all about inflation, recession, debt, bankruptcy, companies downsizing, laying off hundreds of workers, shareholders firing CEOs, and the company's stock taking a nosedive. Can't we just catch a break and have some good economic news for once?

It might sound strange to you, but ask yourself, does it make sense to burden yourself with things that you have absolutely no influence on - and some of these things don't really affect you personally?

I understand that it's hard to stand aside and pretend that nothing bad is happening, but the first step towards feeling better is to simply stop looking for bad news and try to create some good news yourself at your local level. If millions of people did the same, then it would have a very positive impact on everything, and even on the economy.

I'm sure there are a lot of good stories globally, but as someone already mentioned, bad news sells much better, and the media are exactly the ones we can blame for favoring bad news at the expense of good news.

Did you know there are websites that only promote good news?

Come to think of it — I wonder how long Bitcointalk would've survived if it wasn't for signature campaigns? Activity wouldn't be this big if it wasn't for bounties.

In the beginning, there were no signature campaigns, and in addition, Bitcoin did not have a price that motivated people, as is the case today - and yet a respectable community was created then, of which, unfortunately, there are not many members who are active on the forum today. Of course, the campaigns played a big role (and they still do today), although it should be said that the benefit was mutual because many companies from the world of cryptocurrencies successfully advertised on this forum.

I see this admin user has 7 posts, but can't see his posts, what's wrong with that?

I think that these posts are somehow hidden or even deleted. As far as I remember, it was probably some kind of test posts that did not have any important meaning. See more here -> Older profile than Theymos
817  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Any alternative Bitcoin transaction accelerators to viaBTC? on: November 18, 2023, 11:49:20 AM
The same reason other genuine transaction accelerators stop their service. The fees the miners will earn compared to other mining pools. Remember, mining pools are now getting more reliant on the transaction fees rather than block rewards and are soon going to be halved again. 100 transactions with way fewer fees per hour means less fees for the miners every time ViaBTC mines a block. If it's after 4 hours, that's 400 transactions with fewer fees.

I don't think that ViaBTC can generate any serious losses with this free service, but that it uses them very well to attract a large number of people to visit their website, which offers some other tools besides transaction accelerators. Of course, there is also an accelerator that is not free, and it is certainly used by some, so we can talk about some kind of source of income here as well.

At the end of the day, we cannot rely on such services forever, and even if they are still available with only 100 free transactions every hour, this will not solve the problem of expensive fees, not even for 1% of users.
818  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The PATRIOT Act comes to cryptocurrency on: November 18, 2023, 11:26:31 AM
Yup. It's their current favorite bullshit. A few years ago it was all about how bitcoin is single handedly causing global warming. But now it's about how bitcoin is single handedly funding terrorism. Next up will be something like bitcoin is single handedly going to collapse the economy and your IRA/pension will be worthless.

The worst thing in all of this is that through years of repeating the same claims, an attitude has formed among people that this is true - and to me it looks like some kind of operation that aims to eliminate Bitcoin at some point by simply banning trading through CEXs and mining. It won't literally kill Bitcoin, but most people still do what the authorities say.

Although their current mass surveillance has achieved nothing, all that proves is that the government needs more mass surveillance, right? Roll Eyes

I don't think that their current surveillance was unable to prevent what is currently happening in Israel or what happened in the US in the past, but that some things simply had to happen in order to justify all the wars that were fought in the past and which are being conducted today.

Of course, it is a win-win situation for those who want even stronger surveillance, because the "failure" enabled an open reckoning with those with whom they want to settle, and at the same time, human rights and their privacy will fall a few steps lower.

However, the big question is... what kind of malware and spyware has affected BTC wallet users on Android? It's true, I haven't encountered any malware and spyware on Android that threatens my security, but it's essential for me to know what their models are... this way, my vigilance will be more appropriately tuned without compromising my security.

In general, you can expect any malware/virus that appears in desktop versions, with the only difference being that malware adapts to mobile applications on such devices. If you follow all the advice that you could read in this topic, you have a small chance of infecting your device with something malicious, although you should always count on something new and unpredictable that can slip under the radar and infect millions of smartphones in a very short time.
