1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is It Late To Invest In Bitcoin? on: November 20, 2023, 06:15:05 PM
I am a 20-year-old student. Not long ago, I heard a famous cryptocurrency expert in Korea on YouTube.

He said, "Bitcoin investment seems to be late, to be honest. I'm sad, too. I think 2018 was the last chance for ordinary people."

This makes me feel depressed. That expert started investing in bitcoin in 2013, and he encouraged his acquaintances to invest in bitcoin, but at that time he said everyone thought he was crazy.

Honestly, as an ordinary college student, the price of bitcoin now feels too much to buy.. If it's the price of the early 2010s, I might have bought it through a part-time job..

I'm so pathetic and depressed because I didn't know Bitcoin quickly. What should I do? Cry

It’s not too late to invest in bitcoin. Bitcoin isn’t a means to make you rich, it’s something you can own over time even in small pieces and be part of something greater than the traditional fiat currency. If you can buy a piece of the technology now, you could. If you want to buy it in the future, you can do that aswell.

I prefer dogs over cats. They’re just more playful and energetic that I think they brighten up your day. Cats on the other hand think they own you.

Alright so here is the answer to Puzzle 2:

This one was supposed to be a lot easier, there is a total of 9 options for the leftmost digit since 0 cannot be in that place, and then 9 options for the second digit since 0 can now be included, then 8 and so forth. The solution becomes 9x9! which equals 3,265,920.

5  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: My regret for not adopting bitcoin earlier. on: October 05, 2023, 08:43:20 PM
There will always be regrets that people will have, but we have to move on knowing that it could've been worse.

I had 2 bitcoin during the time that bitcoin was worth around $300, and I exchanged them for amazon gift cards to buy something at that time. If I had kept them, I would've have been in a much better place today, but I still hold on to the small amount i have. I've recovered one of my wallets from a few years ago and now buying a bit here and there. My goal is to reach 0.1 btc before the end of the year.

Adding a new Puzzle 2!:

Puzzle 2:
How many different 10-digit numbers, such as 7,829,034,651, can be written by using all 10 digits? Numbers starting with zero are excluded?

This one is a step away from the area of probability and might be easier for some!
7  Other / Off-topic / Re: 🤔🧩The Puzzle Thread🧩🤔 on: September 23, 2023, 06:58:39 PM
Therefore it is always better switch.

Edit:
The probability of the discarded option is added to the free option, because you have chosen before with a probability of 1/3. Many mathematicians judged Monty Hall because you would think that the odds would be 50/50, but that is not the case.

What you’re describing is the solution to the Monty hall problem where the probability goes from 1/3 to 2/3 when you switch. This puzzle is different, well because you’re given the fact that one of the private keys revealed a bitcoin. Just with this statement you know that the probability of your wallet picked being the 2 BTC wallet is no longer 1/3.

Here are all the possible wallets with keys laid out but we don’t know which wallet is which.
Wallet1 key 1: 1btc
Wallet1 key 2: 1btc
Wallet2 key 1: 1btc
Wallet2 key 2: 1ltc
Wallet3 key 1: 1ltc
Wallet3 key 2: 1ltc

As soon as it’s revealed we have a private key with 1 btc in our wallet. We know it’s between wallet 1 and 2. Now if we look at what the odds are of being wallet 1 or 2, we would see that it’s 2/3 odds that’s it’s wallet 1 based on the fact that we know we found a btc key (there are 3 btc keys between wallet 1 and 2), hence wallet 1 has 2/3 cases where the btc was from and wallet 2 has 1/3 cases.

Now that we know that we have a 2/3 probability of us picking the wallet with 2 btc, it becomes pretty clear that switching would reduce it to 1/3 and therefore we should not switch!

Humble Request for Bitcoin Talk Community's Support in Promoting Bitcoin

Idea Image : https://ibb.co/sy0CfCP

Dear Bitcoin Talk Community Members,

I hope this message finds you all in good health and high spirits. I am writing to you today with a humble request that holds the potential to make a significant impact on our shared mission of spreading the adoption of Bitcoin.

I have a vision that I believe aligns perfectly with the values and aspirations of this community - to bring Bitcoin closer to everyday life, one street at a time. To bring this vision to life, I am embarking on a journey to launch a Bitcoin snack vending machine initiative. These vending machines will not only provide convenient snacks but will also promote the use of Bitcoin in a tangible way, fostering awareness and understanding of this groundbreaking technology.

To get this project off the ground, I am in need of your support. I am kindly requesting donations ranging from $1 to $10, with the goal of raising $3000. This amount will be used to purchase the initial vending machine and secure the necessary domain for our venture.

I want to emphasize that your contribution, no matter how small, will make a meaningful difference. I understand the value of your hard-earned Bitcoins and want to assure you that this investment in our project will not go unnoticed. As the vending machine business starts generating revenue, I am committed to returning the funds to our generous donors. This is not merely a request for charity; it is an opportunity to join me on a journey to promote Bitcoin in every corner of our communities.

One unique aspect of our vending machine is that it will only accept Bitcoin payments through the Lightning Network, enhancing the overall user experience while demonstrating the efficiency and speed of Bitcoin transactions.

To all the Bitcoin enthusiasts and believers in the power of cryptocurrency, I humbly request your support. Your small contributions will help us reach our goal and bring us one step closer to making Bitcoin an integral part of daily life.

If you are willing to support our cause, please consider making a donation to the following Bitcoin address: 168FF9EoZA5Hj49zqZzYrFfRB7zGaXfj4b

Thank you in advance for your generosity and for believing in the potential of our project. Together, we can make Bitcoin accessible to everyone, and I am excited to embark on this journey with you.

Should you have any questions or wish to discuss this initiative further, please feel free to reach out to me at lionswaq@icloud.com

With gratitude and optimism,

I’ll share with you this post from theymos in 2019 about nakamoto that I found very interesting. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5092492.0

It’s the hard work that Satoshi put in that’s made bitcoin such a success. I have no questions for him, I admire the hard working individual that satoshi was and hopefully is today.

I won't provide an answer because, to be honest, I was unsure how to respond until I did some online research on the Monty Hall problem. Wink

I just want to say that it was a fascinating and thought-provoking read. It's amusing how our logical thinking can sometimes clash with the mathematical principles of probability. Hats off OP for starting this thread. A great mental workout!

Seeing someone else fascinated by the same interests as mine is a great feeling, Cheers!

I'll add some sources to the main post for the Monty Hall problem, I forgot that not everyone would have seen the problem before, although it is a popular one!

The Puzzle / Riddle Thread

Hi Everyone,

As a bitcoin enthusiast, I enjoy math and statistics along with cryptography. So in this thread, I would like to share my passion with all of you. I really enjoy solving puzzles that have some form of math in them. Puzzles like the Monty Hall Problem are my favourite. I'll be sharing some new puzzles / riddles here that I found to be enjoyable, hard to solve and challenging. I encourage anyone interested in these to try and solve them without any external help. Some / most of these will be tricky so try to think outside of the box.

In terms of answers, I'll update the main thread after a few days to post the answer. If one of you solve it with an easy to follow answer, I'll use that as the solution and mention you in the credits!

If anyone has any submissions to add to this list, please reply or send me a DM and I'll consider it. Note: It doesn't have to be bitcoin/ crypto related, any tricky puzzles and riddle's are welcome as long as they require some thinking to solve!

Good Luck!

You can click here to travel down to the current puzzle: Current Puzzle

Puzzle 1:
inspired by the monty hall problem
You are presented with three wallet.dat files. Each file contains 2 private keys. These private keys can hold either 1 Bitcoin or 1 Litecoin. Lets' not worry about address generation for now!

  • One of the three wallets has 2BTC
  • One has 1BTC and 1LTC
  • One has 2LTC

You are not allowed to check the balances for each wallet and you have no way of knowing which wallet is which.

You are asked to choose one wallet as a prize. After you've chosen, your wallet file is imported into a desktop wallet and and one private key from your wallet is revealed. You find out that the key revealed holds 1 bitcoin. The wallet with 2LTC is taken out of the prize pool, and you are given the option to switch your wallet to the other remaining option.

Should you switch your choice??

Puzzle 1 Solution:
This puzzle is different, well because you’re given the fact that one of the private keys revealed a bitcoin. Just with this statement you know that the probability of your wallet picked being the 2 BTC wallet is no longer 1/3.

Here are all the possible wallets with keys laid out but we don’t know which wallet is which.
  • Wallet1 key 1: 1btc
  • Wallet1 key 2: 1btc
  • Wallet2 key 1: 1btc
  • Wallet2 key 2: 1ltc
  • Wallet3 key 1: 1ltc
  • Wallet3 key 2: 1ltc

Puzzle 2:
Martin Gardner

How many different 10-digit numbers, such as 7,829,034,651, can be written by using all 10 digits? Numbers starting with zero are excluded?

Puzzle 2 Solution:
Will be posted soon!

Revision Log:
  • 2023-09-27: Added a new Puzzle 2
  • 2023-09-23: Added solution for Puzzle 1

I don’t think it’s fair to say that people are not nerdy enough. Bitcoin in todays date is hell of a lot more recognized commodity compared to what it was a few years ago.

Even though the average person might not fully recognize how it works and operates, the average knowledge that an individual has on bitcoin is far greater than what it was 5 years ago.

This only goes to show that there is improvements being made in the knowledge transfer and we will be in a better place 5 years from now

I had a chance to test out the Texas Hold em Poker game mode on the Utopia platform and here is my review. The crypto-based poker platform was easy to download and get started into, redeeming the CRP voucher was a breeze as well. After I was ready to get started, there was a bit of a wait to find players to play with. However after a while, I was able to join 2 players and play a few hands of poker.

I'm a bit new in the forum and still trying to figure out how so many things work, I would love to know how to get a functional wallet address or a step-by-step guide on how to create one.

This post does a great job highlighting bitcoin wallets: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1631151.0

Give it a good read, I’m currently using the unstoppable wallet for iOS and it works great for my use case.

Electrum is good for windows aswell.

18  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin in your country. on: September 13, 2023, 06:52:57 PM
ATMs: There are a vast number of Bitcoin ATMs that can been seen and used freely.
I'm curious about Bitcoin ATMs in the Western countries. Are these owned by the government or by exchange companies?

Furthermore, when you conduct transactions, you're often required to go through a Know Your Customer (KYC) process for every Bitcoin purchase on government-regulated exchanges. Does this mean that when you buy Bitcoin at a Bitcoin ATM, you also have to scan your ID card or provide other personal information?

I'm intrigued by the presence of BTCATMs, especially since they haven't quite made their way to my country yet. Perhaps it's because our culture and societal norms haven't quite caught up with this technology, given that its adoption hasn't been widespread. Nonetheless, I'm eager to give those BTCATM buttons a try and engage in some transactions when they eventually arrive in my area. Here's hoping BTCATMs will soon be available in my vicinity!

These Canadian ATMs are owned and operated by third party companies. I found a cool list online that shows the breakdown by operator in Canada. Localcoin is the biggest operator. Source

Also Toronto has the most ATMs as expected. Here's a summary of all the locations for Localcoin operated ATMs. Locations

Usually for smaller transactions, sorry not sure how much, but im thinking around <$1000, you only need to provide the ATM with your phone number to be able to purchase, but for larger transactions, ID is required. Here's a snippet from the localcoinatm website: https://localcoinatm.com/faq/

Code:
All users will be required to supply a Canadian phone number and complete a one-time-password (“OTP”) authentication to register on our platform. This is how we will receive receipts after your purchases.

Additionally, for your protection, and in accordance with federal laws, you will be requested to complete a “KYC” verification at specified thresholds.  In these cases, you will be required to provide your name, home address, occupation, and provide a government-issued identification (“ID”), such as a driver’s license or passport for authentication against a “selfie” image. All of your personal information is securely stored in accordance with our Privacy Policy.
19  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: List of useful Bitcoin block explorers on: September 13, 2023, 06:41:25 PM
There is this new Bitcoin block explorer it just got to know about today. It also supports other notable chains. It has a nice UI. However, I can't rate as I have just known it only today, maybe someone can help rate it

https://3xpl.com/bitcoin
Tor Link: http://3xplor3rzajysy4j5fi3g3k27vivfcw75zjxdb2tg2wpz3i4cdiyhxyd.onion

My default explorer has been blockchair, but the one you linked has a very clean UI and I was hopeful to be switching as i was a big fan of the summary Events/sec, Events/24hr, Mempool size stats.

But when I tried searching an empty bitcoin wallet on the site, it just gave me an error. I would have wanted it to show me a wallet with 0 balance, maybe even show the qr code for easier input into mobile.

for reference here is the working link on blockchair, and the non-working link on 3xpl.

Anyone have any ideas why this happens for empty wallets? Anything with a balance shows up correctly.
20  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin in your country. on: September 13, 2023, 06:24:21 PM
I'm in Canada and here is a overview of Bitcoin in Canada:

Legal Tender Status: It is currently not considered legal tender, maybe one day in the future  Tongue
ATMs: There are a vast number of Bitcoin ATMs that can been seen and used freely.

Canadians are expected to complete KYC to buy bitcoin on almost all exchanges. Binance has stopped providing its services in Canada due to the "tight" Canadian regulations around bitcoin [1].

Digital assets like cryptos are treated as securities, and are under regulation through the different security laws by regional securities regulatory bodies meaning these regulations also operate at the provincial level [2].

I would say Canada is not a very crypto friendly country as of yet. But maybe I'm just biased because I miss Binance.
