601  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What all can I do to speed up my 5830? on: May 07, 2012, 05:26:23 AM
I have a Radeon HD 5830. An okay card to start out with.

Two questions:

1. How do I cool this thing as much as possible? I mean, *every* setting I can change to make it cooler

2. How can I get my MH/s as high as possible? Once again, I am open to *any* suggestion, including voltage changes.

I hear you can flash the bios with 5850 bios and get those things up to like 350 mhash but I too am a newb.  Do not know how to do that.

I have tried BitLotto a few times.  Great site!
Thanks. It will be interesting if this draw is even bigger than the last one!

Matter fact, I think I missed this month so far.  Gotta go buy a ticket.

604  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Looking for Bitcoins via cash in mail on: May 06, 2012, 09:19:05 PM
It is a legit question.

You can buy money orders and send them to CampBX and they will fund your account fast.  That is probably the quickest way to get BTC with cash.
605  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: New client (0.6.1) stuck downloading block 176947 on: May 06, 2012, 09:18:21 PM
Reinstall usually does the trick.  Delete any folders associated with the client and keep your wallet.dat before anything ... but you should already always have a backup of your wallet.dat file.

I am hearing these are some of the best out there for mining?

Thanks, I am new just learning.  I picked up a good bundle of them for a good price used.  Still in warranty.  Wondering if I got a good score!!!

Intersango is a bunch of scam artists.

I always hear to stay away from them.

613  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Buy and sell bitcoins -- or mine and sell. What one is better? on: May 05, 2012, 03:31:29 AM
My rate is 6 cents per kwh ... is that good?

That's very good. At that rate, you'd need a hashing efficiency at least 0.42 Mhash/J to be profitable (without taking into account the capital cost of your hardware), which you can get from any high-end ATI card. It makes me wonder why you're complaining about how expensive it is.

Interesting stuff.  Thank you.

I personally have been waiting for 3 checks

There are multiple methods to sell your bitcoins.  Have you considered CampBX?  They too are in the U.S. and offer as one with the withdrawal methods, to send a check.

What is considered 'cheap' electricity?

Electricity that costs less than the value of the bitcoins produced from it (the exact break-even point varies a lot depending on the efficiency of your mining rig).

My rate is 6 cents per kwh ... is that good?
616  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Buy and sell bitcoins -- or mine and sell. What one is better? on: May 05, 2012, 01:48:12 AM
Because if you live somewhere where electricity is cheap, then mining is profitable. Mining bitcoins in an area where electricity is expensive makes about as much sense as growing bananas in the desert, and in that case you're better of buying your bitcoins (and bananas) from someone who can produce them cheaper than you can. People wanting something that they can't produce as cheaply or as easily as someone else is pretty much the whole reason trade exists.

617  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How do you know if you won Gigavps raffle? on: May 04, 2012, 11:12:24 PM
The raffle was for a device that computes millions of SHA256 hashes per second, I figured it wasn't unreasonable to ask you to compute one. Plus, the entire process was explained in the raffle thread. The SHA256 calculator I linked you to? It's the one GigaVPS linked you to as well. Sorry if I'm unreasonably harsh but one of my pet peeves is people who don't actually read directions then complain when they can't follow them.

Well know that I see the humor in it, that was rather funny.

And I will take this as a lesson learned and I will read entire posts.  I have severe ADHD and I swear I cannot read one paragraph without wanting to go look at some boobs, then shortly after want a steak, then shortly after watch Sponge Bob while breakdancing on cardboard I got from ordering computers on newegg, cooking macaroni and cheese with bacon from pigs I raised in the back yard.

See... my brain goes offffff in wonderland too much.

But I appreciate your help.
618  Other / Beginners & Help / Buy and sell bitcoins -- or mine and sell. What one is better? on: May 04, 2012, 11:09:48 PM
I find that it is rather expensive to mine bitcoins.  Best deal I can find is 600 dollars to get 832 mhash (with waiting 4 months to get the item) or pay a crazy amount of money for a rig that does not suck up 1000 dollars a month power.

I also find that I can buy bitcoins from an exchange and sell them on eBay for much more.

Why do people even mine?

Thanks, just a newbie trying to learn.  This bitcoin stuff is amazing.
619  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How do you know if you won Gigavps raffle? on: May 04, 2012, 11:02:05 PM
Awesome, thanks for the help, Midskes!  I am a newbie (that is why I am here) and still trying to learn.  Your post was helpful.

enmaku - No.  I didn't realize I am in a room full of people who are constantly trying to engineer new ways to compute said hashes faster and more efficiently.  Last I checked, this is a newbie forum --- and I am a newbie.

But thank you for linking me to the calculator.  I learned something new and will hold on to this information.

Thank you.

How in the Lord Hell do I figure out what my email hash and that crap was for the raffle?  I only went to public high school.
