101  Economy / Economics / Re: Speculate about the year 2020 on: May 16, 2012, 04:51:10 PM
Wow, thanks you guys!  I love the Millie and Mike.  I knew there would be proper terms out there.

You guys hit a couple plot points (or came very close).  That's encouraging because I want this environment to be just on the edge of truely possible.

The prisons are swollen with violators of morality clauses of the new 'enhanced' Patriot Act. They are used as manual communications screeners (think of the NSA data hub being built in Utah, prisoners are the mTurk workers and they are incentivised to identify 'questionable' communications).  Alt.2600 has developed to an unregulated communications system and most resisters carry equipment adapted for connections to avoid the 100% government surveilance of all communications.

Physical money is strongly discouraged to enable 100% tracking and taxation.  Employers offer crap housing as part of wages (and USD wages are extremely low preventing escape from the serf labor class).  As a result, barter is more common and the bitcoin is an underground currency.

Water is tightly controlled. Pink slime is the main protien source (now I need to add fructaid - cool idea since a ConAgra has taken over most farmland for corn production).

Any other ideas, please feel free to post or send me a PM, no matter how weird.
102  Economy / Economics / Speculate about the year 2020 on: May 16, 2012, 07:28:26 AM
I'm working on a book that will be released in August.  The book is set in the US in the year 2020.  It's a humor/dystopia type book. (The movie Idiocracy is an example of the genre).  In the book, the USD still exists, but much of the population have moved over System D.  I'm specifically citing Bitcoins as the primary alternative currency and was thinking maybe you guys/gals could help me with some things:

[A] Have you guys thought about what it would be like in an environment where there is wide spread acceptance?  What are the "cool things" or "cool forms of trade" that bitcoins could enable?  I already have the tech basics down, like the square bar code, bitcoin logo in shop windows, etc.  I'm looking for funny / neat things that might be possible in an environment where the infrastructure as we know it today is going into a hole.

One example:  Fuel prices are high, truckers are paid like crap so make extra money on the side by giving rides to travelers along their trips.  Truckers/travelers coordinate through a "travel app" and truckers take payment in bitcoins so it doesn't show up on their income (because the government has essentially forced everyone into electronic funds and made physical dollars/coins almost useless).

[ B ] What would you name a 0.001 bitcoin?  I was thinking a bitlette or maybe kilocoin? Any ideas from people who've been in this environment much longer would be appreciated.

[C] Is there any bitcoin based kickstarter type site out there?

Thanks for any help.  I appologize if this is in the wrong forum, but I'm trying to capture a more fully developed economy in the book (and hopefully with a bit of humor to it).

Yes, just saw that.  You are GOOD!  Thank you.

Banks have standards and things to prevent their facilities to be used against money laundering and terrorism

I think any Bitcoin Business / Exchange where one can trade over a certain limit for Bitcoin should have some sort of compliance and procedures in place.

Doesent have to be as strict or pain in the ass as the banking institutions, but we still need to come off as we are trying

The easiest way to accomplish this would be to limit transfers above the cut-off limit (e.g. USD$10k w/the same day) to only those institutions that are regulated.  This doesn't prevent them from making multiple transfers, but even US banks don't document multiple small transfers.

Your right, it does sound like that.
However, in this case Im the one going to jail if I dont allow the probing.

I'm new to bitcoins and just learning.  But I've dealt with security in the US financial verticle for a while.  Judging by a quick look around your site.  I'm not totally sure if or how you would be regulated.  It doesn't look like you deal with actual cash. Unless you physically accept cash (as in dollars/checks) or disperse cash to individuals (I didn't see this, but I could have missed it), then your obligations are likely defined by your interface institutions.

What you should to do is write up a risk mitigation plan (based on your interfaces) that you can present in the event that your services are questions by any authorities. Then implement it.  That will give you standing for having considered the issue and addressed it within the current regulatory requirements. It will also save a lot of fumbling if you're drawn into any investigation or some sort of an audit.

As a minimum, you need a data destruction policy (that would be part of your risk mitigation plan) that is followed religiously - even if you do not have the entire risk mitigation plan.  I say this because IF an investigation is started the first thing you will have to justify is any deleted data.  Without a written plan (with evidence of enforcement), they can try to claim that you deleted 'evidence' or force you into expensive data mining to answer obtuse questions.

Where are you getting 16% inflation?  The current US inflation rate is about 2.5%

Also, bitcoin transactions/income are taxable.  They are not different than any other barter income.  And you do have to report barter income on tax returns.

Also, paying obligations (bonds) is an expense, not a 'loophole' as you call it.

Home are taxed as investments.  It is called capital gain/loss on the sale of a home.
107  Other / Meta / Re: We need a "No begging" policy... on: May 06, 2012, 03:46:59 AM
Wow. Now I feel like a total noob (again).

While trapped under the newbie dome, there was a thread, some guy asked for 1 BTC.  I thought all these nice people had actually given him 1BTC each.  (In my defense, I offered a 400-500 word article for 1BTC).

You guys need to be a bit more clear with your snarkiness (at least in that forum).  How else will we newbies learn the rules of the road?  Its real tempting to beg when it looks like some guy got 5BTC just for having the balls to ask for it.

*slinks away in shame*
108  Other / Meta / Secure/Non-Secure Mixed Content Pop Ups (IE8) on: May 06, 2012, 03:34:01 AM
I'm getting these popups.  It seems they're comming because the internal avatars (e.g. mine is set to Bon Jovi) are served as http instead of https.  This is so annoying.  It is on every page.  I'd rather not lower the security configuration of my brower.  Can this be fixed on your side?  Or am I doing something wrong in IE?

Thanks for doing this.  I browsed around your site a bit, then went over to bitmit too (based on your site write up)
I'm still working on even my first BTC, but did enter an address *fingers crossed*

112  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Give away/request free bitcoins here! on: May 05, 2012, 02:21:06 PM
I'm totally new and SOOOOOO confused.  Is there a link to all of the acronyms/abbrieviations anywhere?
I'd love it if someone could send me a donation to 15mNLMwAkcGCUpF9gc4oEMKkeZESCfG8M9

0.0100409 btc sent , enjoy  Grin
Got it.  Thank you so much.
113  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I was thinking. on: May 05, 2012, 01:52:07 PM
I'm new, so if there's a link that explains it better.  I won't be offended if you just post that.  BUT....

I'm trying to imagine how converting 30 million into bitcoins could put them in a position to create havoc on the network.  That would mean even individuals could do it.  Just look at how much is being spent on US superPACs.

They could buy stuff, they could convert back to USD or what ever at the current rates, they could give the BTC away (in wich case, please can I be in line?  I'm still working on my first 1BTC  Grin )  Or they could 'disappear' the BTC which wouldn't be a whole lot different than putting it into a savings account (potentially, that could raise the value of BTC if they took out a large percentage of BTC available?)

The only way I can see that they could create havoc on the system is if they could create NEW BTC from thin air (fiat currency).  I don't think they can do that, can they?
114  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can I have my first ever 1 BTC? on: May 05, 2012, 01:42:57 PM
In fact, you can have two--they're small.

Wow.  If you guys have all sent him BTCs.  You are amazing and very sweet.
115  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can I have my first ever 1 BTC? on: May 05, 2012, 01:41:14 PM
I need an auto blog network

Sent you PM to not derail this thread any farther.
116  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Trouble with getbitcoin on: May 05, 2012, 01:32:29 PM
Not to derail the thread, but is there a list somewhere of the 'companies' providing this type service?  What would they be called?
117  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can I have my first ever 1 BTC? on: May 05, 2012, 01:27:46 PM
I'll pay you for services, what are your skills?
I'll write a 400-500 word article for you.  I hold a MS in MIS, 10+ years as a professional and also am pretty good at humor if you want that.
118  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: CoinAd - Free Coins every single day. on: May 05, 2012, 01:20:59 PM
It could just be me, but I'm getting a pop-up asking if I want to allow non-secure content on your site.  (I also get it from this site as well).  That usually happens when you have people in an Https session, but then provide images that are not https (e.g. http//mypic.jpg  instead of https://mypic.jpg )

Also, have you thought about putting your advertisers into a phone-book style directory?  I clicked on one, but then closed their page and couldn't remember their name.  So I went back to your site and had to cycle severall times to find them again.

119  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What do you use Bitcoins for? on: May 04, 2012, 07:00:31 PM
this is expanding by the daily, i hope bitinstant manage to break through

I found their web site (Bitinstant), but am not sure what to make of it.  Can I use my Chase Bank account to buy bitcoins through them?
120  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What do you use Bitcoins for? on: May 04, 2012, 06:53:54 PM
buying different things online, wish I could use it for more, but not many real offers, for example I need some products in the hosting world, and not many accept BTC, reputable companies I mean.

I can set you up with a host gator account if you pay one year in advance.  My account is a reseller account (paid 2 years in advance) and you would be a sub account under that.  That would give you cpanel, storage, bandwidth.  You'd have to do all your own management/programming.
