21  Economy / Economics / Re: Are we at the point where we HAVE to pay tx fee? on: May 05, 2011, 10:36:03 PM
What would happen if someone spammed the network with millions of transactions?

Reminds me of a similar question I'm mesmerizing about:

Who sets the price of transactions? The network or the miners?

If it's the miner, could an entity set up a massive supercomputer, mine most blocks and then set the transaction fees to 99%?
The prices are not set, they are "decided" by the market composed of miners and people who need the miners to make their transactions. There is a limit of one MB of transaction data per block which has been arbitrarily decided for now. It may be increased or not in the future.
At least that is what I understood.

For the time being, if you go on blockexplorer.com, you will see that blocks don't often exceed 5KB. So there should be 995KB of transactions more still possible per 10 minutes. Hence, I have no idea why there are so many pending transactions. Maybe they are invalid?

Good hearing that, BlueMatt.
23  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: need to check that binaries are generated from the exact source code on: May 05, 2011, 10:28:31 AM
I think what he's trying to say is that a random user can compile the program and say "Hey, i added X feature to bitcoin, try it!".

While in fact it had code that copies wallet.dat and send it to a remote server for someone else's use or directly sending the coins to a 'new' address.
No, I'm talking about the main version of bitcoin. You can't know that the person who compiled it didn't modify the code a bit just before doing so.
24  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: need to check that binaries are generated from the exact source code on: May 05, 2011, 10:20:28 AM
But if you went through all those steps to check the binary, you have built it yourself. So why not build it from source in the first place?

We would not be checking it for ourselves but for all the other people using bitcoin.
Maybe you are using the precompiled version. How do you know it doesn't have a backdoor? You don't! because nobody is checking.
25  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / need to check that binaries are generated from the exact source code on: May 05, 2011, 09:51:26 AM
There is obviously a need to check that the bitcoin binary is indeed produced by building the source code which has (hopefully) been thoroughly checked. Otherwise someone could potentially introduce a backdoor to for instance steal bitcoins. This is especially important since I suppose most people using bitcoins do not bother with compiling it and as we gather more users, there will be more and more people using the precompiled binary.

To quote the README.md file:
Quote
The master branch is regularly built and tested (by who? need people willing to be quality assurance testers), and periodically pushed to the subversion repo to become the official, stable, released bitcoin.

In order to check the binary we need to be able to reproduce it exactly from the source. For that, we need to know the exact version of the compiler used, the exact version of the libraries used, a script that reproduces every step of the building process (modifications to the makefile, stripping debug symbols, ...), and anything else that I may have forgotten.
So please, whoever is in charge of creating the compiled packages (Gavin Anderson?), give us all the information needed to check them.

Que se passe-t-il ici???
27  Economy / Economics / Re: Read this before having an opinion on economics on: May 02, 2011, 12:51:27 PM
This means that the creators of those goods would not have an incentive to continue creating them, and society would lose since it would have fewer inventions, etc.

That is simply false. There is still the incentive for the enjoyment of creating, becoming famous from creating, selling live performances, donations, etc. There are people that wish to create but can't because you can't use characters from existing works for fear of lawsuits. So it seems to me that even though there will be some discouragement to some people there will be encouragement to others. Which outweighs which? Do you have anything to offer aside from your gut feelings?

I would also like to add that we have a plethora of real world examples of free (as in free speech) intellectual creations being created and quite often working out better than commercialized intellectual creations. We have loads of free software for example, and not many computer scientists would argue that msdos is a better kernel than linux. We also have wikipedia that accumulated around 16 million USD of donations last year. So not only are people willing to give away there time for free in doing tasks that benefit the community as a whole but also, people are willing to give them money for doing so.
I would also like to point out - although this can be considered a subjective opinion I suppose - that intellectual works made with only money as an incentive (e.g. most big movies) are plain crap since their goal is not the expression of an artistic vision from the creator but just creating as much money as possible by pleasing the evermore stupid crowd of people who will buy it.
28  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin on Ubuntu 11.04 on: May 01, 2011, 10:13:47 PM
After compiling with latest wxWidget daily snapshot, I can confirm the GUI is working fine here.

By the way, are you using Unity? What do you think of this new interface?

I hate it. It takes up space and I find the new menu system a real pain. I just switched to the classic interface after a few minutes.

I am quite sure this is a bug in bitcoin and not in Ubuntu since the same thing seams to happen with other window managers. See this bug report: https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/issues/128

I'll do the *translation* (as you can see, I have a better English than Ptitfred Wink (sans vouloir t'offenser, Ptitfred) )  for 40BTC. I speak French fluently.

I just saw this:

Unfortunately, we have the official registration in Russia and we are forced to pay more taxes (about $ 1200 a year - it's a lot for me). In fact, I earn nothing on this site.

If you broaden your market to other European countries, you should be able to earn more from your exchange so our contribution as translators will be beneficial to your business. That is why I will only do it for a price.

Well, let me know if you're interested.

By the way, you have grammar mistakes in your English version. I will gladly correct these (for a price).
