301  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Please explain Mastercoin? on: December 09, 2013, 04:59:03 PM
Here's a great article:

http://bitcoinmagazine.com/7961/mastercoin-a-second-generation-protocol-on-the-bitcoin-blockchain/

I recommend basically everything that this guy writes, he knows what he's talking about and he's good at explaining things.
302  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2013-12-08] Bitcoin: China’s New Special Economic Zone on: December 08, 2013, 05:32:53 PM
Any tl;dr version?

China creates 'ringfence' around Bitcoin economy in order to allow growth and development in a safe test environment.

Buy up all the cheap coins.
303  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I have over 33,000 bitcoins. on: December 07, 2013, 04:01:54 PM

Ah, I get it now!

Good joke.  Cheesy

Thanks for the lesson.
304  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Today was an excellent opportunity for an "Exit Drill" on: December 07, 2013, 02:39:50 PM
Good for you. Honestly I mean it, I'm glad you won this time.

Just be careful, I have seen enough people caught in bear traps to know that this is generally the less common outcome.
305  Other / Meta / Re: I have over 33,000 bitcoins. on: December 07, 2013, 02:34:30 PM
And seriously why don't they just delete this bullshit thread.

They shouldn't delete the thread. Censorship is bad. Just hope that people will have a bit of common sense and treat it with a healthy dose of scepticism.
306  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: MasterCoin Buyer/Seller Thread on: December 07, 2013, 01:54:23 PM
Successful trade completed with bitexch.

Thanks!

FucksGiven = (33,000 ^ 0);
FucksGiven--;

33,000 ^ 0 = 1

Correct.  Next line?

Is it 0?

Use these peaks to unload your coins.

Use the dips to buy more!  Cheesy
310  Economy / Speculation / Re: Borrowed $1,000,000 (1 million dollars) from my dad to invest in BTC (serious) on: December 07, 2013, 12:03:32 AM
Can I make a suggestion?

If your Dad has $1 million to lend you for a year, surely you could just borrow $50k more or less indefinitely. You will find this much easier to invest in one go. Try to buy on a dip. Sit on it for at least 1 year, no matter what (preferably 2 years). Follow the market closely but don't sell in a panic. Be prepared to lose the full amount (you would have to be prepared to lose the $1m, so this is less of a risk).

Okay, if Bitcoin really takes off in the next few years, we may well see a further 20x, and you get your $1m. Pay your Dad back and enjoy your newfound wealth.

If it fails, you owe your Dad $50k - a failed business venture. You have some hope of paying that back, or perhaps if he is as wealthy as your post suggests, he may write off the debt.

I suspect this thread is a troll, but if not, that's a lot of money to be throwing at something which you obviously don't have much understanding of.
311  Economy / Speculation / Re: Balls of Steel on: December 06, 2013, 10:24:46 PM
Titles like the one of this thread starts showing up when the panic is widespread Cry It's the first stage of grief.

All I can say is that I have been there. Eons ago I had over a thousand coins.

And boy I miss having so many coins which I sold in fear to "take profit" during bubble pops. Not even because of their fiat value now, hadn't I sold them. What I miss is the feeling of being part of an elite. Because now I know that with the earnings of my job I will never ever be able to have over a thousand coins again.

I wish I was able to really guess the dips and profit from them so that I could multiply my coins. But I suck at trading.
I have great hopes for wider merchant adoption though. I dream of being paid for my job in btc and to be able to pay all my bills and grocery in btc, while converting into fiat only at need.

I have learnt not to trade BTC/USD - I lose more often than I win.

Try trading LTC/BTC instead.

Here. Not phased.  Although it's not that tough if you're super long, and ROI already over 10,000%.

+1.

314  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin is looking weak. Recommend you guys take profits soon over $1000. on: December 06, 2013, 05:42:11 PM

May I just say, thank fk I know better than to listens to nutters like you!

Yes sir, I will keep my money and am looking forward to owning much more btc than I had, at yet lower prices.

It's your money and your way to lose them Smiley We'll talk again once you buy at 1300.

Why should he buy at 1300 ? he will be able to buy around USD 600 soon...

Maybe or maybe not. I would say yes, on this occasion, there is a good chance of going that low. But the only predictable thing about short term swings is that they are mostly unpredictable. Very easy to lose money trying to pick tops and bottoms. Instead, figure out your long term projection of price, and then devise your strategy to eliminate the risk of short term volatility.

Buy and hold is the simplest way to do this.

@MatTheCat: I hope we do go below $800, and you get to buy your cheap coins. Out of interest, if we recover from here, and go above $1000 again, do you have a price at which you will buy back in, if it continues to climb?
315  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin is looking weak. Recommend you guys take profits soon over $1000. on: December 06, 2013, 05:38:33 PM
I have now entered at top of market and done quite well, although am losing now and selling at lower prices than I paid to limit damage.

Oh man I considered you to be smarter than that. You just never sell bitcoin cheaper than you bought it, because every dip is a temporary retrace. Your panic mode for bitcoin should mean "stop buying" and then when you think it stopped falling you start buying again. Any other way - and you are just robbing yourself. Can't stop you, of course, but sad to see.

I think what he is saying is instead of buying at $1000, selling at $900, then rebuying at $800, you are better off to continue to hold those $1000 coins, and still buy at $800.  That way, when the price returns to $1000+ you are more ahead than if you sold for a loss.

NorbyTheGreek gets it.

EDIT: Note that if you successfully sell at $900 and rebuy at $800, you would be better off than just holding what you bought at $1000 and buying more at $800. The reason for not selling at $900 is to hedge against the possibility that price doesn't make it to $800, and instead goes back up to over $1000. Buying back after this leads to a loss.
316  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Today was an excellent opportunity for an "Exit Drill" on: December 06, 2013, 04:37:51 PM
For the benefit of OP:

Now that we seem to be dropping, here's a tip - You don't sell for $850 what you previously were unwilling to sell for over $1000. If you were unwilling to sell for $1000+, you should jump at the opportunity to buy at $850. Or wait, and see if it goes any lower. Point is, you can't predict where the bottom will be, so if you sell hoping to buy lower, and it turns around again, you end up buying back at a higher price and therefore you lose money.

If you believe that BTC will trade at $1000+ at some point in the future, there's no need to worry about a little dip back to $500 or so.
317  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-12-06 The Guardian "Bitcoin endorsed by Wall Street strategist" on: December 06, 2013, 12:05:15 PM
All media coverage should have this headline from now on: "BITCOIN OPINIONS POLARISED INTO THOSE WHO GET IT AND THOSE THAT DON'T"

Then just run the latest "I get it/I don't get it" report. It would save alot of time, we could just look at who the owner is of the latest head above the parapet, and skip the rest of the text. I can't even summon the motivation to find out how credible the latest head on the chopping block actually is, there's just too much repetitive "Bitcoin is a decentralised...." waffle to wade through till they tell you something new.

My thoughts exactly (by this stage).

Good post.

He is precisely the sort of investor who feeds whales :/

Added to the list of examples of how not to do it.

-MatTheCat (this thread)
-joburgtaxi (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=358584.0)

First they buy, then price drops, so they sell in order to 'limit damage'. Then when its going up again, and its 'proved' that it is now on an upward trajectory (after having climbed quite a way), they buy back in. This buy high sell low strategy is not a good way to make money.

OP is the perfect example of how NOT to do it.
