Cheers guys, thanks for the links.

Hadn;t realised how much these had come down in price, these cost ~$200 when first ordered from beastlymac, then didn't arrive for several months, now they've finally turned up and I don't have time to obtain a controller and find a space to set them up I figured I'd just sell them on, but it seems I'll be swallowing a 75% loss  Sad

Ah well, shit happens.

bitlind: I'll let you know if I decide to sell, but I'm not even sure its worth dumping them at current price, might just order a controller and get them set up...
62  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: Gridseeds - $100 USD (11 available) on: May 14, 2014, 01:28:48 AM
Thanks for the feedback, I haven't been keeping track of prices recently but last I saw was group buy for $130/unit, I'm looking to shift quickly so I knocked off $30. I'll double check ebay and alter the pricing.

EDIT: Are you sure this is overpriced? I just had a look and found similar prices elsewhere...

Cheapest I could find was around $105 USD, shipped. So how would $105/unit including free shipping sound? Although I'd ideally want to make that UK shipping and not have to send worldwide.
63  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Question about paper wallet from new guy on: May 14, 2014, 01:15:56 AM
Blockchain.info is very good in my experience. Just make sure you use a strong password, and don't forget it! Also, back up your wallet identifier. I have one mate who used a terrible password and lost his entire balance, and another who lost his wallet identifier (fortunately we were able to recover the wallet, as he had remembered his password.)

Alternatively, if you have enough disk space just run Bitcoin QT and keep it running. Helps the network  Wink
64  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: Gridseeds - $100 USD (11 available) on: May 13, 2014, 10:28:38 PM
-Shipping from the UK

-USB cable included

-Unfortunately there are only 4 power cables available. 1 Molex, 1 PCIE, and 2 adapter/splitter type cables.
65  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Question about paper wallet from new guy on: May 13, 2014, 10:19:43 PM
Which wallet do you use?
66  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Question about paper wallet from new guy on: May 13, 2014, 05:46:55 PM
When you redeem the balance, you'll generally be sweeping the entire amount - then send any excess to a new paper wallet. The only exception I can think of would be if you import the private key from the paper wallet into an Armory wallet for signing transactions offline.

Then I started seeing suggestions that when you set it up one should test it to make sure all is good by spending a small amount.

They probably meant try out the process using a small amount to make sure you understand it, and then repeat using the full amount that you want to save offline.

I'd also suggest making several copies and storing them safely in different places.
67  Economy / Computer hardware / [WTS] Gridseeds - $70 USD (11 available) (UK) on: May 13, 2014, 05:26:30 PM
I have 11x Gridseed 5 chips which I've decided to sell. I don't have a controller and I don't have space to set them up, so I'm just listing them here for anyone who's interested.

Price is $70/unit + $20 shipping for up to 2 units; add an additional $10/unit shipping for more than 2 units.

Calculate the amount in USD, convert to BTC using Bitstamp rate and send to:

1NvtyUHQQ92w6JjVYCeMrBW4LTHMTZ757a

Then message me to confirm you have sent payment.

Please send from an address you control or have the private key. I will require a signed message to prevent disputes. I will ship as soon as as possible after I receive payment (usually next day at the latest).

Feel free to message me via PM with any questions.

Thanks.

From the official press release 2014:

Quote
As promised on our return this year we will continue with this project increasing the irrigation, more repairing of fences and planting more trees. As we have 60 people going we are currently negotiating a secondary project for the future and our continuing support for these people.

Any help that can be given is appreciated and donations may be made in several ways. Our Virgin Money Giving page on the internet is really useful as we can claim Gift Aid on donations made this way - http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/Hatters50Namibia. You can also send donations direct to Stephen Ward, 106 Arlington Road, Southgate, N14 5AT or transfer money electronically to Southgate District Scout Council - Hatters Explorer Scout Unit, Bank sort code: 20-98-21, Account Number: 03387119, Our Charity Number is 303656

Here are some photos from the previous trip:

I will get the registered charity number from the scout leader + any other information people request to verify the legitimacy of this project.

Would love some feedback on the idea of having a 'sponsor a tree' program.

Any other ideas from the community for ways to raise awareness would be really appreciated. I'm currently in the planning stages for a campaign on Reddit.

70  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Charity Project - The Hatters Explorer Scout Unit on: April 23, 2014, 11:16:53 PM
Hello everyone.

For those of you who don't know me, my name is Tim and I've been hanging around these forums for over a year now. I discovered Bitcoin in 2012 and decided to start trading on localbitcoins.com to earn a bit of extra cash in the form of commission.

Since then, I have also found myself learning about how markets function, and how to trade on the exchanges. I've gradually become more and more involved in crypto-currencies - This year, I co-founded a joint venture with a friend, cryptoware.co.uk - a mining hardware reseller.

So that's a bit about me and my background. Now I'd like to share something else with all of you: A charity project involving the local scout group, which my sister is a part of.

The Hatters Explorer Scout Unit – A sustainable development project in Namibia (Charity Number 303656)

In 2010, a relationship began between

1) The Hatters Explorer Scout Unit

2) The people of a small village in rural Tsinstabis, and

3) The Scouts of Namibia

This has since enriched the lives of the 27 strong UK contingent, developed Scouting in Namibia and transformed a derelict plantation into a symbol of hope for the local Bush People who now manage it. The expedition in 2011 was the result of a long and arduous year of planning and fundraising.

The expedition in 2014 is no different.

The result will be no different.

The Hatters have been fundraising and supporting the partnership since 2011 and will return to Tsinstabis this summer to start a new project. This partnership now has the potential to change countless lives.

The aims of the expedition in 2011 were:

-To provide a sustainable and plentiful supply of water that could be used to irrigate the soil
-To plant the initial 200 orange trees on a plantation that would eventually host 800
-To start a new Scout Group in Tsinstabis
-And crucially, to initiate a partnership agreement detailing commitments of all parties

The expedition of 2014 is not only a wonderful opportunity for a new group of young people to change their lives; it is part of a commitment that The Hatters Explorer Scout Unit has made to the area. The targets for 2014 are:

-To complete any work that has to be finished on the original site
-To start a new plantation within Tsinstabis and leave it in the same excellent condition as in 2011.

This sustainable partnership has already had a vast impact upon the UK Scouts, has changed views towards projects like this within Namibia and already made a difference to the lives of the San Bush People on the first site.

The next expedition will develop another plantation, change more lives and provide more Scouts with a once (OK, maybe twice) in a lifetime experience.

Here is the web page for the project: http://nambia.wordpress.com/

I'm hoping to help them raise donations from the Bitcoin community. I'd also love to hear any suggestions from people as to how else Bitcoin might have a role to play in helping this project. I have a few ideas myself which I'd love to discuss with everyone here. My feeling is that there may be opportunities further down the line; for example, to sell the produce using Bitcoin? I also had an idea of maybe doing a 'sponsor a tree' program, perhaps using something such as Mastercoin to issue 'orange tree' tokens which would entitle the holder to a share of the harvest.

Thanks for reading, and I hope we can all help to play a part in the continuing success of this project!
71  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2014-04-17] Coinbuzz: Second hand store CeX to payout in bitcoin on: April 18, 2014, 10:08:43 AM
Cex is pretty big and well known here - they have stores in all the main cities. If they started accepting BTC in store too, that'd be awesome.
72  Economy / Speculation / Re: SecondMarket Bitcoin Investment Trust Observer on: April 18, 2014, 09:51:05 AM
1048XBT net buying yesterday. The total holding is at ATH of 102293XBT

Thanks for being so on top of this. This is one of the most useful thread's in the speculation sub-forum.

+1, Thanks for the effort

This looks really cool  Cool

Great work!

Is it possible to use the hash of each new block as a source of entropy?
Not really - see above.

Ah okay, yeah that makes sense. So a pretty useless suggestion then...

Well, at least I learned something.  Smiley

76  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If there's a huge drop in hash power.. on: April 05, 2014, 07:56:09 PM
Since the introduction in ASICs, there's never been a drop big enough where energy cost of mining > value of btc produced.
Ahh but it has happened under the video card era, and there was no drop.  There's no reason to believe ASIC operators would be any different.

You can bet those datacenters spending thousands of dollars in electricity a day will turn off their ASICs if it turns unprofitable.
Only if those data centers are relying on immediate BTC sale to pay their day to day bills. If they're in it for long positions, the daily exchange rate means diddly squat.

Yes, if the exchange rate drops precipitously and stays low for a long period, some miners will drop off and instead put their money into direct purchase.  Will it be 95%? No.

Also remember that there's more to mining than just acquiring BTC.  If there were not, there would be no ASIC sales. There's not a single machine you can order today that will make more than it costs in BTC over its lifetime. Yet they still continue to sell.

You think someone who has millions to invest in an ASIC datacenter is stupid?

If the cost of mining a coin = $10 in electricity, and the current price of bitcoin is $5, someone who's in it for the long position (and has half a brain) will turn off their ASICs, and spend the money they would've spent on the power bill buying the bitcoin on the market.

Pretty simple math here.

Or they might keep it running to prevent a drop in hash rate which could threaten their investment.
77  Other / Off-topic / Re: Which was the last movie that you Admired? on: March 22, 2014, 06:48:03 PM
Recently watched the Wolf of Wall Street (obviously) then decided to watch the 1987 'Wall Street' too, and then Boiler Room. Might have to watch American Psycho too. You have to appreciate these for what they are  Smiley

Blood Diamond is another I watched not too long ago; that's a really good film.

78  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2014-03-19] Russia wiping out bitcoin on: March 22, 2014, 02:13:53 PM
Why are people surprised that Russia is tyrannical about economic freedom? When have they done anything different since the czar? It's not like the oligarchs are into sharing.

I think it's very unfair to paint the people of russia as bad because they happen to be run by corrupt oligarchs who also control the media they see. If you watch Russian TV you would think the west is demonically plotting against the russian people. It's somewhat sad that they seem to have gone back to the days of believing what they are told by the state, just like China, North Korea, Iran etc...

We too believe what the State tells us, but it's easier to swallow because we've all got smartphones, power, and just turn a knob when we want clean drinkable water.

Wouldn't it be nice if everyone had access to these things? Just as long as we still retain our freedom that is. Would anyone disagree with this sentiment, and if so why?
