41  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / what will happen in 37 weeks when bitcoin halves again on: November 08, 2015, 02:16:23 AM

According to the bitcoin clock bitcoin will drop to 12.5 btc per block in late July of 2016.

How will miners react to this?

What will it take to keep miners mining?

What if miners in large numbers decide not to mine?

42  Bitcoin / Pools / how do I join a pool on: November 07, 2015, 08:13:57 PM

Hello to all,

Just purchased 188GHs on a ANTS5 miner from Hashnet. Is it a seperate step to join a pool or Am I automatically joined to the Antpool? I would like to join the antpool to try it out. How do I go about doing that?

Thanks in advance

Just beware if government want to take your stuff for the "greater good"

Actually, there are no laws regulating bitcoin in Argentina. It is perfectly legal to mine, buy, sell, or trade BTC.
We are not a communist country, and from the way it looks, it is going to stay that way. It is in the U.S. that bitcoin traders have to worry. The U.S. is scared of Bitcoin and they will regulate it soon more than likely. People have already been charged for trading in bitcoin without a license in FL. CA requires a license now and other states want to start regulating it.

I am moving into a place in Buenos Aires, Argentina where power will be free. Power is cheap here anyhow. How much mining power do I need approximately to generate 1 btc a month?

I heard another way of mining is to actually buy mining power on line. You donīt have to worry about any equipment breaking down.  Is there a tutorial on mining and how to perform all the necessary calculations? What about a excel spreadsheet?

What are your thoughts?
There are ways to get around the import tax but it may require him to have it shipped into uruguay.

I would not plan on that it's not a good businesses  practice to dodge laws.  If you buy new most likely it will come with correct amount and you will owe import/vat.

If op has them we need to know how much.   And we still need to know electricity price.

Well, I have a traverler coming in December, who is a U.S. Citizen. I am not concerned too much about the laws as Argentine Customs does not bother U.S. Citizens that much. Itīs their own that they scrutinize the most. I am not certain on the laws here. I was told by a lot of travelers that one electronic item is O.K, as long as itīs not for resale. Itīs when you start bringing in multiple items that they want to start taxing you.

As far as the cost of electricity down here exactly, I am not sure. I know it is cheap compared to other countries. I think somewhere around $0.03 per kwh. When I get my hands on a bill I will post it. Again the place I am moving into, electric is free. Might as well mine.

If you have free electricity I would get miners and set them up assuming you don't have a big import/vat tax.  Free electricity is hard to beat.

As far as online be careful on what site you go with do some research.  Looked like a possible shill account posting above me.  But look into cloud mining before throwing money at a site.  Some are not a good investment.

Yes, that is what I am thinking. At home mining with free electricity is the way to go. Might as well get something out of it since I will be paying rent.

Thanks for the info guys. Much appreciated. What I ended up doing is sending all of my btc to an electrum wallet where I generated a new private key. I have the seed saved just in case anything happens.

If you intend to leave your coins in those address, remember to backup your bitcoin core private keys, because the electrum 12 word seed will NOT generate those bitcoin core addresses when you restore from seed in the future.

Please feedback after do this step...

Is that because the private keys would have been imported and not generated in electrum iteself?

Still have 7 weeks left. I am hoping when I wake up in the morning it will be done and my btc will show up. Anyhow, Why does the core wallet need the entire blockchain and light wallets do not? If I donīt need to maintain such a large database why do it?
50  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Encrypted wallet.dat, lost password, any solutions? on: November 05, 2015, 03:35:48 AM
-snip-
you don't actually need to worry much as there are some scripts which you can perform on your PC which can take out the password from .dat file.
-snip-

Its not as easy as you might think.

Lets say you have a good randomly generated password with 6 alphanumerical symbols [a-z,A-Z,0-9] and remember nothing about it. Thats 862 possible combinations. With 1600 passwords checked per second (its roughly what my GPU does on bitcoin core wallet files) it would take 1.9*1045 years to crack the password. Testing a few million passwords is no problem though, but you will have to remember a lot about your password to get there.

You canīt check 1600 passwords a second, sorry to dissapoint you. Most properly written encryption software will allow 1 per second if the iterations are set high. In your case, you may need the help of a professional. If you had a passphrase with a high bit rate you are going to have to remember a good portion of your password, and then a script can be written to attack it. Again though, if the encryption for the wallet was written propertly, you may only be able to try 1 password per second. I used a script written by someone else to crack my LUKS encryption password to a flashdrive. I knew what the pw was. just didnīt know what symbols I added to the beginning and end. I was able to incorporate the symbols I thought were used in the script and after several days i got it. however, i knew most of the passphrase. LUKS encryption only allows you to try 1 password per second because of high iterations.

The other option may be to try to do a forensic search to see if the password was cached somewhere? This is unlikely however, as good encryption software prevents this from happening.

Hello everyone,

Just installed Bitcoin Core wallet on windows and the blockchain was 6 years and 50 weeks behind or so. The first 5 years went by fairly fast, however, the last year and 50 weeks are dreadfully slow and still going. There are 46 weeks left as I write this and it has been two days. There are 8 active connections to bitcoin network. Can anyone tell me why it is taking so long? How can I avoid this next time I set up another wallet, and can someone point me to a good tutorial on wallet management? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
