161  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][GRE] GreenCoin - A Tradeable Carbon Credit Ecosystem on: January 05, 2016, 06:40:06 PM
Instructions:

Windows users. Open My Computer and in the address bar type %APPDATA% and hit enter
Look for the folder called GreencoinV2 and delete every file except wallet.dat
Now you can download run the new greencoinv2 client

New Client Windows Link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/94bfex1or76ip19/greencoin.zip?dl=0

To perform the swap over, click help, debug window and then console on the V1 QT client

Do this for all of your greencoin v1 addresses:
run the command:  dumpprivkey <Your GRE V1 Address Here (Without the brackets)>
You should get a response such as: RhGsLCi4ckTfv9zMtq1WFhDukw2Z1HBUebH8EzoyeFXLh5pCTqqJ

Note all of these down

On the GREv2 client click help, debug window and then console
for each of the private keys from the V1 wallet run the command:
importprivkey <private key>
e.g. importprivkey RhGsLCi4ckTfv9zMtq1WFhDukw2Z1HBUebH8EzoyeFXLh5pCTqqJ

The wallet will appear to hang for a few minutes as it re-scans the blockchain.

Once completed you should see your coins in your wallet

Ahmed

Ahmed mentioned to me you can also run:

greencoind -rescan -reindex

and not have to dump the privkey to ASCII, if that's a concern

New wallet up and running, thanks Ahmed -- looking good so far. Waiting to see the staking turn to true (getstakinginfo).

Awesome.

We will find some way of re-compensating these users most likely through buying coins off an exchange and using those.

I will now compile some windows wallets and provide everyone with instructions to obtain your coins

Ahmed

Does it seem weird (as in, non random) those addy's are all GfH-something? Anyway, that list represents such a tiny amount of coins it can certainly be covered easily (I can do it).

Looking forward to the wallets tomorrow and maybe the changeover is complete. Exciting!
164  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][GRE] GreenCoin - A Tradeable Carbon Credit Ecosystem on: January 04, 2016, 05:49:19 PM
Given the events of the past few days, could Ahmed or Chris please finish de-bugging then;
1. provide a wallet,
2. bootstrapped IP address for chain dispersion,
3. clear and consolidated instructions on wallet transfer.

Regards,

Cranky

Some (bad-ish) news on this end. After processing about 20K payments the premine wallet ended up corrupting itself. Going to roll the chain back and this time send the coins using a small GRE network and will release the client as soon as theyre all sent and confirmed. Might be a day or 2 due to the 98K~ payouts left to make

Ahmed

Sorry the coin is taking a while. The changeover to PoS was hindered by the desire to be able to add data to the blockchain (via OP_RETURN). Ahmed is working on solutions but it will take time. He's on the case, probably one of the best guys you can get to be doing so.

Any coin transfer instructions will be posted and bulletproof, so don't worry about that.
165  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][GRE] GreenCoin - A Tradeable Carbon Credit Ecosystem on: January 04, 2016, 05:34:25 PM
If the change over works, will the non-redeemable coins the foundation paid out be re-issued on the new chain?

Producers: I'll keep paying on the old GRE chain even though they are not redeemable. This ensures if the new coin were to not work that there was payout continuity. However, if and when the new coin is working there will be a day (or several days perhaps) where users were paid in old GRE coins that ultimately are not redeemable.

I know it's not a very big deal, but the central tenets I have stuck to with running GreenCoin is to:
1) ensure it is fair to all participants equally and,
2) pay out every day

We will lose a couple of days with this changeover. I know this is not a big deal for the small number of you that are GreenCoin members but I just wanted to mention it.

Once we have the PoS changeover behind us we can make this coin into a potentially widely followed personal carbon crediting ecosystem.

no, but I can donate them in.

are you in contact with cryptopia to update also?

swap process? sorry if posted already but switching to POS is a pain in the #$#

yes, the PoS switch is definitely a pain and worth it once we get through it. Right now the number of users of GreenCoin is low so the inconvenience, learning curve, etc is small so we just get it done now and then the Foundation has a stable coin it can massively promote as a peer-to-peer carbon crediting system.

I contacted Cryptopia and they froze withdrawals/deposits until the switchover which is all that really matters. Once the new chain is live they can do the private-key import like everyone else and traders with coins on the exchange will be on the new chain automatically.

Producers: Given the time it is taking to re-scan the blockchain the coin release will be delayed an unknown amount of time (but hopefully less than one full day for sure).

I just ran the payout for Jan. 1 per the usual way on the old GreenCoin chain. I'll continue to do this until the blockchain gets switched over so there is nothing special to do. Just keep chugging along as usual. Once the new chain is up and running I'll need you to put in the new wallet addresses so you can capture the payouts on the new chain of course.

Is there any updated client? Mines still at block 120... 3 connections...

the link to the previous wallet is deprecated. It is being recompiled now. The inital ~800,000 blocks of addy's from the old chain are also being pulled into block 0 of the new chain. You can watch this in real time here:
http://greencoin.crypto-expert.com/

We are up to block 175,000 or so. This process will take awhile.
173  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][GRE] GreenCoin - A Tradeable Carbon Credit Ecosystem on: January 01, 2016, 08:03:04 PM
For Producers: I just realized last night's (12/31/2015) coin payout failed (this is what I get for not double checking -- but it was already late!!  Angry Angry ). I'm paying it now but the tx's will not appear on the blockchain until after block 800,000. Therefore it might make sense to keep old GRE up to block 801,000 or something like that so these coins are included in the snapshot of the blockchain for GREv2. Otherwise, for the first time in 18 months of operation, there will be a missed daily payout. Since we still don't already have a lot of users I'm sure this will be OK, but If ahmed has not performed the blockchain snapshot in the update we can move the block # downstream a little and it won't change anything else.

all payouts for 12/31/15 occurred by block 800,088 so I'll see if we can get the new coin blockchain snapshot to include up to this block....

Ready for launch!

Github: http://github.com/greencoin-dev/greencoinv2
Windows client: https://www.dropbox.com/s/94bfex1or76ip19/greencoin.zip?dl=0

POW mining is enabled with rewards set to 0
POS  mining will start 24 hours after the swap over

Swap over will start block 800,000 on GRE v1.

New wallet: 1 connection, not syncing, rpc says block 120. Ok or a problem?

There was a need to recompile the wallet. It may be a bit later than block 800,000 but will still include tx's up to this block.

I say, very little information on what is happening for such a big change!

Is there a new wallet out now, or will it be recompiled? Should the new wallet work or not? Are the OP-nodes valid for v2? Is the new blockchain moving? Should it, or will it start after v1 block 800,000+? Right now it is stuck at block 120.

Questions, questions, ...  Huh

Disregard Ahmed's first wallet release. It did not have the proper amount of premined coins. It will need to be recompiled. Per the discussion in IRC, he is waiting for block #800,000 to take a snapshot of the old blockchain and recompiling a new wallet for release.

Producers: tonight will be the last full payout using the old GreenCoin blockchain.  I will continue to pay it for a few days or weeks past block #800,000 in the event the new coin fails, needs to be adjusted, or other such issues, though this is not anticipated to be necessary. Assuming the new coin sticks the old coin payouts will only be transferrable to the new coin up to block 800,000.

Upon successful implementation of the new PoS blockchain the old blockchain will no longer be used by the Foundation or supported in any way. Of course, it will most likely continue to exist, given the persistence of blockchain technology being what it is.

The payout run on Jan 1 will be done using the new blockchain and include your carbon data in the comments of the block (if I can get this to work). Therefore I will need users to download a GreenCoinV2 wallet and generate a new address to put into your account at grcoin.com.

Check out the professionally done movie we made introducing GreenCoin on our Facebook page:

https://www.facebook.com/greencoinfoundation/

We will promote this a bit post launch and begin to add instructional content to the website. Feel free to share with any friends that have solar so we can start to build on the renewable producer side.

The new specs:

Block reward will be 4000 GRE per block (static) for both POW and POS (POW wont last long) of which 1/2 is paid to the foundation
Minimum stake time: 24 Hour
Maximum stake weight: -1 (no maximum but in this case doesnt mean much due to the static reward)
Difficulty retarget Algorithm: HoboNickels (HBN)
Block Time: 120 seconds
Base used for the coin: Blackcoin

Supported Features:
- Comments/Messages inside transactions
- OP_RETURN transactions (extra fees are charged here)

Other Info
- Premine (160002000 GRE) 1:1 ratio
- POW will last 3 days as a fallback incase wallets dont stake immediately

The launch is scheduled to occur at block #800,000. This should be about 10:30 AM PDT (US west coast time).

GreenCoin Fork Update:

As anyone familiar with GreenCoin over the course of 2015 knows, we've been advocating for a fork or re-launch for a variety of reasons discussed in length previously. We've ironed out most of the details which are listed below. We are going with a PoS coins for a couple of key reasons:

1) Obviously there is no power-intensive mining necessary, which is great for a coin with an environmental imperative.
2) Regular, everyday users can stake and receive mining awards as opposed to highly technical operations running huge, concentrated mining farms.
3) Other PoS coins exist and have had a fairly stable history of use and security, so we aren't re-inventing the wheel.

Release of GreenCoin V2 will occur at block 800,000. Currently this calculates to Jan 1st, 2016 between 11 and 11:30 AM US Pacific. The current block explorer is here.

Coin Specs:
Coin type: PoS
The Foundation receives half of the staking for awards (given to Renewable Producers through daily payouts, as usual).
Block time: 120 seconds. Note the block time previously was ~61.5 seconds. The dev recommended this.
Block award: see interest rate comments below
Retargetting: Hyperstake algo

Interest rate:
We're looking into a couple of things here. I'll start with the back-up plan, which is to go with a simple 10% interest rate. What this creates is a coin that would have much less per day payout than currently exists at the beginning. To put numbers to it, there will be 1.6B coins at block 800k. An interest rate of 10% would generate on average 438k coins per day early on (219k each for foundation/stakers), which is far less than the 1.4M currently being generated per day for each. Given this is no longer a PoW coin with a halving rate, eventually this number would grow and overtake the 1.4M per day number, but it would take quite awhile for this to happen. We could set the fixed interest rate higher but given the coin grows exponentially now, it may inflate too quickly to be useful at an interest rate set too high.

Therefore, we started looking into a declining interest rate. It could, for example, start at ~70% annual interest and the daily payout would almost exactly equal the current one, and then have it re-adjust along an exponential decay function in order to keep the payout about the same each day. The third and final option, which we just began to discuss yesterday is a fixed coin payout per block, which for PoS is relatively new. This would be ideal because then we'd keep the payouts equal to 2.8M per day (1.4M each). The 2 min block award set for this would then equal 4000 coins per block (2k each producer/staker). The staker also gets the fees, if any. Technically, this is 2.88M/1.44M coins per day for 720 blocks occurring every 2 minutes on average, which is very close tot he 1,419,060 coins/day average for each we see now with the PoW system, so that is the reason for picking 4k per block.

Other notes:
  • Stake time is 24 hours (time you need to hold before you stake). Given the Foundation pays out coins every 24 hours, the Foundation will not stake.
  • The coin will still be called GreenCoin. It will install in a folder named something like "greencoin_v2". The logo will be the same.
  • The blockchain will be able to store data via OP_RETURN
  • Important: An exchange for old coins will be unnecessary. You can simply dump your privkey from the old chain, then import this key into your new wallet and your coins will be there.

I will keep posting updates as we get closer. Feel free to comment and ask questions. This will be a fun and exciting upgrade for GreenCoin!
