Most altcoins are completely junk I'll give you that. There are however some altcoins that fill roles that bitcoin currently does not. For example if you want a truly anonymous coin you'd need to have Monero. If you think that decentralized assets will become a bit hit then either Counterparty, Etherum or Aetherum would be a few good choices. If you think that SuperNET will succeed potentially having a small amount of bitcoindark would be a good investment. Stay AWAY from Ripple centralized scamcoin and pretty much every other altcoin out there. Bitcoin is 100% guaranteed to succeed in my opinion. After that I give Monero a good shot due to its anonymity. Whether or not a small amount of counterparty and bitcoindark is worth it to you depends on how much you want to gamble/speculate. Don't gamble any of your coins. Don't believe any investment site. Keep your coins on your own secure trezor/cold wallet etc. Come back in 5 years and profit

News 3/18/15Fed takes step to rate hike but scales back intended pace n a unanimous vote, the Fed as expected dropped its pledge to remain “patient” about raising rates in a statement released after a two-day meeting. And 15 of the bank’s top 17 officials think the Fed will raise rates sometime this year. See text of statement.
Still, the Fed cautioned that it will wait to raise rates until it has “seen further improvement in the labor market and is reasonably confident that inflation will move back to its 2% objective over the medium term.” --It's getting to the point where the supposed debate about raising the rates is just as silly as discussing whether or not we should increase our debt ceiling. It will never happen and if it does we will have a major economic correction across almost all asset classes. Yellen Admits "Market Valuations Are On The High Side", Adds "No Comment" On Biotech, Social Media StocksWith a firm "no comment" Janet Yellen shied away from burstng the bubble in "extremely stretched" Biotech and Social Media stocks, but was forced to admit that "overall measures of equity valluations are on the high side." Then, rather oddly, she notes that The Fed sees unusually low spreads in corporate bond markets... which is odd since they have actually widened dramatically in the last year or so, perhaps signalling just how "high" valuations are in stocks...
Yellen "no comment" on Biotechs... but "market valuations on the high side."
--Yellen says that the bubble "threats are moderate", which really means that they are huge and she is going to downplay the threats in order to not cause a financial panic. Greek Bank Deposit Outflows Spike As Capital Controls Concern SpreadsWith Greek bank bonds collapsing, stocks near record lows, Greek default risk at post-crisis record highs, and Greek government bond yields spiking, it has been surprisng that we have not seen the ATM lines and generalized 'panic' of a population in fear of being "Cyprus'd." Well, now as ekathimerini reports, that appears to escalating and rapidly as credit sector officials estimated that the flight of deposits yesterday alone amounted to 350-400 million euros, which was some five times higher than the daily average in previous days.
As ekathimerini reports, Greek banks are suffering from fresh turbulence due to the tension and the apparent collision course between Athens and its creditors. Bank stocks gave up more than 8 percent of their value on Wednesday, while the outflow of deposits was far greater than on previous days.

Holy shit! We are getting 200+BTC dumps at a time on finex! I seriously just hope this is the Evo admins dumping their coins so we can move past this....
Edit: Market absorbed a 2200 total market sell within 5 mins with only a $3 decrease in price. Not bad for a change, this usually would have induced some panic selling but market is slightly recovering.

This could turn ugly for the guy... Running away with 43K is A LOT of money even at these prices, but not enough to be vanished. Hope he returns the funds... Lets not forget that they stole from drugs and arms dealers too....this isn't exactly nice Mt. Gox trading businesses that they stole from... As far as bitcoin price goes we have been seeing higher highs and higher lows since mid February, this dip back down to the low $280's is breaking that trend

Well they should have been targeting their tax evaders this whole time. One could even argue that if the people of Greece actually paid the taxes that they owed that it could have at least postponed their inevitable bankruptcy..... Now a Bail-in aka "hair cut" would be a completely different situation, that could start turning first world countries to cryptocurrencies as a safe haven for wealth.

Here is a snippet from the article: http://www.forbes.com/sites/thomasbrewster/2015/03/18/evolution-market-a-scam-says-site-pr/Reddit users seeking out mob justice believe they have found the Bitcoin wallet address that at least one of the admins is using to draw in Evo’s funds. It has seen an influx of large sums of Bitcoin in the last week, with its total now at 43,083 BTC, the equivalent of $12.2 million at the current exchange rate. There’s no proof that wallet isn’t legitimate, however.
https://blockchain.info/address/1Ps2m56aEudGVKj7ch8mAje4x6bBzGVNgU?sort=0 that address is where they are getting the 43,000 "stolen" btc from, but it has a total received BTC of 43,000 with only a few thousand being received in the past 1-2 weeks. Most of it has been dispersed to other addresses with only about 900 btc left in it currently. Either way though the owners of Evo could potentially be selling off their bitcoins currently, but if I were them I would do it very slow over a long period of time otherwise it may make them more obvious targets to exchanges (and thus potentially Law enforcement) who was running Evo.

Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation
|
on: March 18, 2015, 09:13:36 AM

I think the new ATH is realistic during summer and the end of 2015 we might reach the 10 usd/xmr target.
we will not see $ 10 this year. i think it is very unrealistic that we will overtake drk,bts and ltc in marketcap. In the end of this year the daily emission is about 11 000 XMR. 10 USD price means the emission needs 110 000 usd/day which is not impossible - in my opinion. I don't say it will happen but certainly it is possible. I understand that currently it looks pretty distant as emission is 16 000 XMR/day and price is 0.80 USD/XMR. Last summer Monero cost 3-5 USD so 10 USD is not impossible in my opinion. It's really a loop that will feed on itself though. If Monero price keeps going up more of the miners will hoard their coins in speculation that they will be worth more "tomorrow", which then leads to a lower available emission on the exchanges, which then creates a more limited supply -> Leading to more hoarding and so on. Also since most of XMR trading is done via bitcoin the value of XMR could just be seen fixed to what amount of bitcoin you would get for it (rather than a USD amount). If bitcoin goes up in price lets say back to $1000 and XMR is able to hold its exchange rate relative to bitcoin at 0.0025 (lets say that's the current price) then XMR would be worth almost 5x the fiat price it currently is without having to perform better against bitcoin at all. Also after the rise in price of bitcoin suddenly people turn to altcoins as a way to try to increase their profit margins (since they can rise and fall faster in smaller market caps) which could then actually boost its BTC/XMR exchange rate adding to an even higher USD rate. My example of this happening would be what happened to litecoin after bitcoin went through the roof.

Economy / Service Discussion / Linking addresses to wallets?

A few months ago I stumbled upon a website that gathered information on whole "wallets" by linking addresses together that are used to sign the same transaction. Now I can't seem to find it for the life of me. Can someone please share the websites URL again for me?

Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2015-03-16] CS - App Pays You in Bitcoin Based on Intensity of Your Workout
|
on: March 16, 2015, 10:41:30 AM
|
There is no real details there but I don't see how this will pan out long term. If it relies on fitness hardware eventually the hardware will be hacked so that people can reap maximum bitcoins per day without doing the workout. Also who will be paying for the bitcoins "mined on a cpu", which has multiple problems.
1) Why mining on a CPU? 2) Are you creating an altcoin that is being mined on the CPU that is then supposed to be traded for BTC (and thus lowering its value everday)? 3) Who is paying for the CPU's? 4) Who is paying for the electricity? 5) What benefit does the app developers receive from all of this?

Still hiring... You're paying someone 5 cents for something that makes the websites $50. You likely won't get many responses unless someone just writes a bot to do the work.

I would be highly surprised if she doesn't own a cell phone with internet connection in the USA....
I'd be more surprised to find out someone in certain European or Asian countries didn't have a cell phone with internet access than someone in the USA. It's shocking and downright shameful how many places in the USA have no options for useful cell phone or internet service. Where I live, T-Mobile or Verizon will work and any other carrier is spotty at best, there is no 4G or even 3G no matter who your carrier is. Up until about 3 months ago when Verizon finally got their act together and decided to make DSL available here your choices for internet would have been dialup or HughesNet (with dialup easily being the better choice.. trust me on this one). Believe it or not, this is in Southern California and only about a 1-2 hour drive to Los Angeles depending on traffic. Of course, I doubt the situation is the same in Austin, TX as it is here in this little rural desert town.. so odds are, she probably does have a smart phone with 4G internet access. Also who would go through the trouble to TRY to make a successful double spend on a $5 pedicab ride?
The same kind of people who would go through the trouble to try to pass off a counterfeit $5 bill, and that does happen.. although that's probably orders of magnitude easier and less expensive than trying to double spend a transaction (with appropriate fees, etc) that has been on the bitcoin network for more than a few seconds. Well 4G would not be needed just to check the blockchain or really for any normal internet browsing, any simple wireless internet connection would suffice. It's much easier for a scam artist to print a fake $5 than to successfully conduct a double spend, like you stated

How does she know that her customers actually paid her? Without something that is connected to the network she has zero way of knowing with any kind of certainty that she actually will get paid.
Although the tip feature/QR code on her bike does make sense for when she would receive payments that she doesn't need to know for sure will eventually get confirmed (and as a result few/no people will attempt to fake and ten double spend a tx to that address), she still needs to know that she will be paid when her customers actually pay their fairs

Get a USB stick of 32 or 64 gigs with a live version of Tails on it, encrypted. Download the whole blockchain manually. That's about the only way you can be sure that your coins are safe. DON'T FORGET to have a paper wallet, USB sticks can randomly fail...!!!!
The better option of this would be to just use the electrum on tails and remember the seed or allow it to be apart of the encrypted permanant drive on tails. Especially since electrum is already setup to sign offline transactions. Then make paper backups of the seed.
