Trying to bitcoins...confused.
Just be sure you don't accidentally the bitcoins.

Really? No other comments?
But it seems like a majority of the---uh, seven---voters agree with me.

Note to the original poster: This is the "buying things for bitcoins" forum. So if you want bitcoins, you aren't buying bitcoins, you're selling Paypal dollars.

I think the main point to take away from this is that he considers his bitcoins "profit."
What is wrong with profiting from his comic strips? How could that possibly cause exploitation? What is wrong with profit? Is he some type of communist? Why would he open the black hole in the first place? Your interpretation of edd's comment is very different from mine. I read it as, "He is thinking of his bitcoins as real money, not pretend internet money. That means there is a good chance he will accept them in trade in the future."

I would like someone set me up with a VPN located in China, so that I can see the internet as it appears within China. I don't need anything fancy---a dynamic IP and no storage space are both fine. I'll pay one bitcoin for one month of this service, and may subscribe for a longer term if I find it useful.
Be warned that I'm looking for a similar service elsewhere. If I can find it for free, obviously I'll go with that.

I understand that a lot of people in China use offshore VPNs and proxies to access the uncensored internet. I'd like to go the other way. That is, I'd like to make my connection appear to be from China, so I can see the internet that Chinese users see. This is mostly out of curiosity, but also has a practical purpose: it seems to be the only way I can open a PayPal.cn account. I've done some quick searches, but this is hard to search for because the typical hit for "Chinese proxy" is actually a proxy intended for people in China. Does anyone here know of one?

Guys, this may be the last day! My wife and I are going for her 20-week checkup today (a bit late). They haven't actually said we're getting an ultrasound today, but they haven't said we aren't, either. So if you want to place a bet, best do so now!

The client supports arbitrarily precise transactions and displays them correctly, but will show 2 decimal places regardless of whether they're needed or not. In the long run this ought to be configurable so that I can show 3 or 4 or 0 trailing zeros if I like. But even then, 2 will probably be the default setting just because it's so familiar to most of the world. (Do they use 3 digits anywhere outside Bitcoinistan and Kuwait?)

eMansipator, I believe you are within your moral rights to post this exchange with or without permission, since you were party to it and no promise of secrecy was made. In fact I hope you do. This case is impossible to judge on relative reputation.

It just annoys me that when I buy my first 1000GBP of bitcoins, I'm buying what probably cost the seller a few dollars several months ago. That's 1000GBP of real money they've got from me and in return for what? Basically nothing. Certainly nothing of any inherent value (unlike stock which produces dividends).
I agree that the scenario you've outlined is basically what's happening. Why does it annoy you? If you think bitcoins are too expensive now, don't buy them. But refusing to buy them because the seller will profit too much is just spiteful.

Hm. Paypal has banned currency exchange, but have they banned payment to sites that only facilitate currency exchange?
As in, I PayPal some dollars to Mt. Gox, "an e-wallet service". Then I exchange those dollars for bitcoins there. Does this count as using PayPal for currency exchange? I mean, banks do currency exchange, but I'm sure PayPal wouldn't stop Bank of America from opening an account as a convenience to its customers.
Not that Mt. Gox seems interested in accepting PayPal. But with their volume they probably could---the proportion of dishonest people is not that high.

Thank you, Madhatter, for responding. I'm inclined to trust you on this. At the same time, I have to wonder: what's the deal with eMansipator?
I'd ask to see the email, but I'm not sure what it would prove. Which brings me to an important moral: DIGITALLY SIGN YOUR CORRESPONDENCE, KIDS!

Hey, I'm interested in this but we'll have to re-negotiate the exchange rate. I'm sending you a PM.

No worries, bitcoin.* is fine as well. A top-level hierarchy in the hand is better than a well-placed subhierarchy in the bush, and all.

I'd like to buy up to 1000 yuán at an exchange rate of one bitcoin per 52.0, or 10000 yen at an exchange rate of one bitcoin per 645.
I don't know of a way to receive other than physical delivery, but I'm open to suggestions. If it is physical delivery, banknotes in an ordinary envelope are fine, and I'll repay the cost of mailing once I get the envelope.

There is some confusion on whether "selling BTC" should be in Selling or Buying. Logically it should be considered "buying (whatever currency)", since like other Buying posts it means that the poster is exchanging BTC for something else. But most people consider it to be Selling, as evidenced by where these posts actually end up.
It's because so many people find this confusing that I feel comfortable claiming currency exchange is different from Buying or Selling, and ought to get its own sub-forum.

|

That sounds about right. It'll take ten minutes or so for MyBitcoin to receive the coins.

edd, I'm likely to order from you if you start offering Ethiopian coffee or something with a similar flavor.

|
This forum is for people who *want* btc and have something to offer in exchange.
I've noticed this confusion myself. I agree in spirit, but in practice it seems like all the "selling BTC, buying national" posts are here, and all the "selling national, buying BTC" posts are in Buying.
