161  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What are the odds we'll find a collision by the time the last bitcoin gets mined? on: March 24, 2011, 04:00:11 AM
There are currently 329,993 addresses in the Bitcoin network. Say that this number of addresses are created every day for the next 140 years. That's 16,862,642,300 addresses.

The chance that at least two of those addresses collided is about 9.7x10-29, using the formula here. Calculation.
I get that the chance is very, very, very  small. But unless there is no chance at all there is still a chance. All I am saying is that there should be a check to make sure that a new address does not exist already.

No one will trust bitcoin with any large transactions if there is even the slightest chance of an address collision.
False. I trust it.
I understand math though ymmv.
Not everybody understands (or has the desire to understand) the math. I know that the chances of a collision is so small that it probably will never happen in a billion years. But try to tell that to some non geek.
Would you trust your money to a bank were the clerk just makes up an account number without checking if the number is already in use?
163  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is Satoshi really Steve Gibson from qrc.com? [dispute this gossip] on: March 24, 2011, 02:30:26 AM
There is no way Steve Gibson wrote the bitcoin client!

If Steve had written the bitcoin client it would be:
- less than 100kb in size
- written in assembler
- cost $ 89.00
- no new version in 7 years

I think that the remote possibility of address collision and the ever increasing need for fees are the two biggest obstacles to the wide acceptance of bitcoins. No one will trust bitcoin with any large transactions if there is even the slightest chance of an address collision.

There is no doubt that everybody likes a free lunch.
May I also have a free dessert after the free lunch?  Grin

There always will be someone to accept free txes.
We just have to find a way to fight off the bad guys who are flooding to make fees mandatory Smiley
Let's hope a solution can be found before it is too late.

Paying a fee was always likely necessary in the long run.  You might like sending free transactions, but that also means spammers can spam unlimited numbers of transactions, unless there are some counter-incentives in place.

If that's the case than I'm afraid that bitcoin will fail. I can't be the only one that absolutely despises fees.

Regarding this i want to say that my pool will continue to accept free transactions in my blocks.

I'm glad to hear that. Slush's decision to stop including free transactions was the main reason why I switched from his pool to yours. I hope the spam problem can be resolved. In my opinion, if  paying a fee will become necessary, bitcoin will die. What is the most hated thing about traditional banking? IT'S THE FEES!

This problem is not related to the pool - other people (on IRC) have the same troubles. There is only the difference that I'm more on the eyes and people are more sensitive. I understand this can turn to politics. But for now it is just technical issue and the best thing to do is to solve it, not to chat about it.

I have probably the working patch already, I have to test it with my rig over the night. As this is very critical, I don't want to pull fresh patch directly to the production. I believe that people understand this (those who _want_ to understand).

I understand and I will probably be back once these 2 problems have been resolved. I have been very happy with your pool this past 4 weeks since I started mining. I doubt you will miss me as my hashing speed is only 155 Mhash/s.

I just switched to another pool, not only because of the payment problems but also because this pool no longer accepts any transactions without a fee. I think this is really bad for the bitcoin network. Yesterday I had a payment take over 8 hours because I did not pay a fee. There is no way I will ever pay a fee! If I wanted to pay fees, I might as well stay with my local bank!

Well, in all cases, free transactions are only temporary bitcoin solution, it won't be probably possible in the future. Also, I didn't stopped receiving free transactions because I'm devillish slush, but because somebody else is spamming network heavily which consume too many resources. We are intensively working on solution and I believe that the bitcoin patch will be accepted also in upstream.

I understand why you are doing this but I think your pool is becoming too big and any changes you make (even if temporary) has a huge affect on the bitcoin network.
