121  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Could Ebay massively speculate adopting BTC? on: November 30, 2012, 07:46:37 AM
The key would to get eBay sellers to start accepting Bitcoins...<snip>

While the bay allows you to accept non-paypal payment methods you are only allowed to use those that meet certain regulations. That means credit card merchent gateways that do identity checks and such. They forbid Western Union because you can send money without ID by using a password instead and it cannot be taken back.

The bay depends on their ability to have complete control at a whim if the money goes to the seller or back to the buyer.

The source material is a press release from the US Dept. of Justice.  But, yes, I do agree that the premise is absurd.  Unfortunately that doesn't change the fact that it's the opinion of a US Attorney.

Yes. It could be a baseless claim from a US Attorney or a baseless claim by the Pope, baseless is baseless. It still smells like a skunk.
123  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Foundation successfully lobbies Valve to use Bitcoin as in-game currency on: November 30, 2012, 06:40:16 AM
How is using a volatile currency going to encourage a stable economy?

Online game economies are an endless repetition of hyperinflation after hyperinflation. Compared to online game currencies bitcoin is rock solid.

Just as world governments endlessly produce more money to keep the ponzi scheme from collapsing online games produce more and more currency until its population is happily accumulating worthless bits.

Take control of the currency away from the game designer and not only is the economy hyperinflation proof but they can incoorperate numerous ways to siphon bitcoins from the economy with in game perks.

I think there is a very strong business model here. You let people play for free but they enter the game with no money. They can send bitcoins to become rich in the game or they could gather resources or do other services for other players to earn currencies. The revenue for the game servers comes from certain expensive resources that can only be bought from NPCs who pay the game authors.

Online games lack poverty, they lack the power for the rich to dominate the poor. I think that dynamic is an important part of an immersive role playing game. The face that you could be a great merchent in the game and then buy real gold coins with the profit is just gravy.

It is the difference between a poker game with a $2 buy in and a poker game with a $500 buy in. In the $2 game you really don't give a shit so you are reckless, the game is less intense. In a high stake game you really act with more caution creating a dramatic standoff.

Same goes for an in game world with real world stakes, people will act with strategy instead of attacking with abandon.
124  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: CURRENTLY, what is the cheapest way to get BTC? on: November 30, 2012, 06:32:07 AM
CURRENTLY, what is the cheapest way to get BTC?

I have found that I can trade silver for BTC using the non-modified market values. This means that I pay 0% premium on the market price of bitcoins vs the market price of my silver.

You can even get the buyer to pay a reasonable shipping charge.

If you don't already own silver then this will not work.
125  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Coinabul gone Bust? on: November 30, 2012, 06:29:41 AM
I am sure it was not your intention, but you brought a very old thread with an inflamitory and innacurate title back out of the archives.

Shit happens though.q

127  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Building a good online reputation on: November 30, 2012, 06:09:27 AM
I came here and expected that as a new user I would get zero trust. So I asked for no trust. Instead I sent my product first to those on the forum who seemed to have a good history. Once they get the item they pay me(I hope).

This seems like I am taking all of the risk and posing no risk to others. Despite that I have faced some rather baseless and essentially silly acusations.

I don't know how to gain a reputation here, if you find out how let me know. All I can think to do is keep delivering on my promises.

129  Economy / Economics / Re: Billionaires hate Bitcoin. on: November 30, 2012, 06:04:32 AM
Why would they want to invest in something that could end their hold on cheap debt and a controllable monetary supply?

It would just be eliminating their power.

If bitcoins could render the fortune of a billionaire worthless, then don't you think they would want bitcoins? You don't become a billionaire by resenting change, rather by embracing it at the right moments.
130  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A plea to exchanges ... lets do 2 factor right! on: November 30, 2012, 05:50:55 AM
I would really like to see a system whereby any transaction on an exchange involves the server giving you a programatically defined contract(Send 150BTC to <someaddress> from my account) and then requiring you to sign it with your GPG key.

We have a high grade cryptographic signing system and I have seen it being used exactly once.

There is a project called bitwasp that will provide a "silk road like" website that anyone can run, but it supports requiring GPG signature for any sensitive action.

Not that user friendly, but if it is optional the more savy folks can really protect their accounts.
131  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Foundation successfully lobbies Valve to use Bitcoin as in-game currency on: November 30, 2012, 05:44:47 AM
Using bitcoins as an online currency in a MMORPG would be brilliant. The game could be free but charge a small 1% fee on withdrawing bitcoins from the game.

The one thing that has ruined role playing games was their failure to maintain a stable economy. By using real currency this is solved.

However, I think in some areas this may be considered online gambling?
132  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Could Ebay massively speculate adopting BTC? on: November 30, 2012, 05:41:09 AM
Could Ebay, strategically, invest massively buying BTC prior announcing adoption of it and earn millions with it so that it would justify letting go of paypal?
How much is Paypal worth and how could Ebay come up with such a speculative move?

Paypal and ebay are two heads of the same monster. Bitcoins will do to paypal what voip did to long distance rates.

The bay will not be embracing the seeds of their own demise anytime soon.
133  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A Interplanetary Currency on: November 30, 2012, 05:38:41 AM
Wouldn't we just use some form of quantum internet. If not, We could super-cool cas coins into BEC's scan them with lasers and beam the info to mars, shoot it at some more supercooled mass and teleport the coins of course.

This.

If we could incoorperate a shark somehow it would be the perfect internet.
Obviously the lasers shooting the BEC info to mars would be mounted on sharks

Be sure the correct shark species is chosen, for we don't want any remoras hitching a ride.

Didn't you know that transaction fees for solely for the purpose of nurishing remoras?

The US cannot even keep drugs out of prisons and they are going to take out bitcoin?

I wouldn't say they've officially gone that route yet, this is just one of those silly articles that get posted up in order to make people jump to daft conclusions.

I agree completely. My point was that not only are the source material's claims completely baseless but that the underlying premise is itself absurd.
136  Economy / Goods / Re: Gold Scrap + Silver Scrap on: November 30, 2012, 03:19:13 AM
Condition, condition, condition... most circulated morgans do not have any inherent numismatic value (with the exception of "key dates" and "cc" mint marks).  They do sometimes carry a spot + $1 premium at my local coin shop anyways, but I can often find them for spot.  Uncirculated morgans on the other hand can go for a much higher premium depending on condition.  One thing I have learned is never to rely on a graded given to a coin by a seller unless it is slabbed by NGC or PCGS.

Thanks for the information and link. I really don't know that much about precious metals. I have never really bought it. Some was left to me and I can't figure out anything to do with it other than sell it. I would really hate to sell the prize of the collection for melt value. I don't really have time to become a coin expert lol.

138  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is bitcoin democratic? on: November 30, 2012, 02:59:38 AM
It is capitalist. A group of people have entered into a complex contract involving fixed rules and cryptographic signatures. Currency is generated by proof of effort and is dispensed from there via the free market.

We all agreed to the same contract, but that is not the same as voting.

Mars has water. Not a lot...

If the frozen water on Mars was melted it would cover over a third of the world with an ocean. There is a lot of water there.
