1  Bitcoin / Hardware / From Laptop to Minepeon on: December 18, 2013, 06:34:38 AM

I'm having a good time playing with minepeon.  However, It looks like I'm getting 10ghs less on my bfl single on the pi then i am just plugging it into the current computer (windows) and running easyminer.  I've done some very basic tuning for moderate overclocking, made the FS noatime, reduced vm.swappiness to zero.  Running with bgfminer.  Any hints from the experienced miners out there?

Stats:
External Powered Belkin USB HUB
BFL Single 50/ghs
External Wireless dongle
Rasp pi model 2

Everything goes into the external powered USB (even the pi) - takes on wall socket for the powered hub
The minor is plugged into the wall.

2 outlets.

Let me know your thoughts.

As a follow up.  I was totally wrong; this gent has a better context I'd say:

Thank you all again for being so thoughtful and helpful.

@beet

Exactly the kinds of things you think about when valuing a company's shares.  You want to know if they are under/over valued -- not necessarily if they like btc or not.  Unless, you feel that truly impacts their fundamentals.
4  Other / Off-topic / Re: Sell your apple stocks now, war is amoung us on: December 11, 2013, 03:42:59 AM
I was under the impression that after the IPA all stock in existence were owned by investors.  Unless, the company issues more of course.  This means that selling the stock doesn't really "hurt" AAPL -- if that is the intention of the post.

If the intention that AAPL (the stock) will become less valuable based on not supporting BTC, there may be something to that. _Only_ in the sense that it (the company) will not take part in growth of BTC currently.  It isn't "exposed" to risk or gains of BTC.

All that being said, I'd bet someone would sell you an ipod for some BTC Smiley

Disclosure:  I do own a small amount Apple as a holding in a large cap divi ETF currently.  I don't own any products however, I don't happen to like them.  Many people do.

edit: bad spelling

Fascinating.  Thank you gents.
6  Economy / Speculation / Evidence of arbitrage US/China - probably me seeing things. on: December 10, 2013, 05:40:37 AM

My apologies.  I don't mean to butt in ( I really do try not to post much ).  However, I've been addicted to fiatleak and there have been a few times where the exact same amount has come in to the China exchange and the US exchange(s); 2 decimal places.  It didn't look very "coincidental" to me - but these things happen.

Is there any evidence of quick arbitrage between these exchanges currently?  If so we should expect the prices on these exchanges to become closer together obviously.  No, I'm not asking because I want to take part.  If it is happening, then it would be someone with much more access then a schmuck like me Smiley

Wait.  If someone bought the same amount on both exchanges at the same time, that wouldn't make sense unless they were using BTC as a medium to arbitrage something else.  These things make my head spin.
7  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoins to crash?? on: December 07, 2013, 04:30:59 AM
I don't post very much.  However, I wanted to point out the current graphical trading patterns on fiatleak.com.  Not that it can't change, but I think it means something that trading is still heavy in comparison to all other countries -- even after this announcement.  Just for consideration.

Edit: bad comma.
8  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / "Virgin" coins at a premium? on: December 03, 2013, 12:45:43 AM

Forgive me if I am missing something.  But if freshly "minted" coins have no transactions on the block chain, wouldn't they innately have a higher privacy value?  Less people connected to the btc.

And if this is true you would think they would trade at a premium.  Thoughts?

11  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: FYI: Think twice about replacing the thermal paste on: September 17, 2013, 04:34:24 AM

Got my "Phoby Thermal Pad Xt 1mm" today.  I cut a little rectangle out of it so that it would cover, with one piece, both chips.

Broke the jally down (again) cleaned off the paste very carefully and thoroughly.  I placed the pads between the chips and the heat sink and screwed the heat sync on securely but not tightly.

Note that I didn't put it completely back together.  In addition I have a stronger fan I pulled from a desktop blowing down on it.

A ten minute test:

Code:

So yeah.  I didn't fix it.  Currently pool reports ~300 mh/s.  I'm believe something irreversibly terrible happened during my mucking about.  It's simply something I'll have to live with probably.  At least now I won't feel weird trying to flash it.

Thanks all for the help/encouragement.  If anything changes, I'll post back.

Lot's o' HW errors.  So here is the plan for now:

Order some thermal pads and a less annoying fan.  Then see what we get.  I'm pretty sure it's hosed up -- mining pool says "12.622 MH/s".  I wouldn't mind flashin' the firmware either and have been looking for an excuse to mess with the rasp.

Ah well.  It's fun learning/mucking-about with this stuff.  Been quite an adventure.

"Maybe your particular unit has too much of a gap between the heatsink and the chip"

Is there supposed to be a plate between the chip and the heat sync?  My unit simply doesn't have that.

I was concerned that there was a good connection.  So I had screwed it on fairly tight.  Went through the whole damn process _AGAIN_.  I found after only having the screws secure but not tight got me back up to ~3.5GH/s.

Still not where I was before I started messing with it.  Perhaps the antec isn't good for this type of chip?  Can someone recommend better thermal material?
14  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: FYI: Think twice about replacing the thermal paste on: August 31, 2013, 05:36:36 AM

Broke it down again.  Cleaned off the paste with 91% isopropyl alcohol and q-tips.  Re-applied, put it back together and BAM!

1.3GHS

Seems like every time I touch this thing it gets worse Sad

Someone said "Replace the thermal pad and used thermal paste myself."  On my jally there is a aluminum pad on the bottom of the board, however there is no pad between the heat sink and the chips.  Is there supposed to be?

Thanks all.  I think now I'm going to drink.
15  Bitcoin / Hardware / FYI: Think twice about replacing the thermal paste on: August 30, 2013, 02:21:57 AM

I'm no hardware hacker, but I thought I was decent enough to put some antech on the darn thing.  After pulling the case off the jally, pulling the heat sink, removing whatever thick stuff they had on there, applied the antech and put it back together.

It was running at 5.1GH/s (with the case removed and the fan turned upside-down)

Now it's running at 3.5GH/s.

In short.  If you are getting good speeds, think about possibly not messing with the thermal paste Smiley

Fascinating about the temperature reading.  I hadn't heard about that.  I've heard that getting random numbers from programs (/dev/random on linux) isn't the best seed.  Thanks for the comments.

Thought Experiment: Entropy, Randomness and Online Bitcoin Casinos

What is "randomness"?  Is anything truly "random"?  Is everything by it's nature "random"?  My research has led me to believe that the only thing that is truly random is the decay of a sub-atomic particle.

Computers have a difficult time of creating a random number.  This is because they can only be told a process in which the outcome appears random by being exceptionally complex.  In addition, some programs (like the rand function in C) can be "seeded" by something that contains more "randomness".  For example when you generate a private key, some applications will ask you to type or click on your keyboard as this can generate specific data which can be used to seed the random function.

All that being said.  Here are the basic premises Aristotle style!

1.  The only truly random happening in the universe is the decay of a sub-atomic particle.
2.  Online casinos back-end random number generator is not tied to the decay of a sub-atomic particle.
3.  Therefore, Online casinos cannot be truly random.

The Experiment

Set up a neural network that attempts to identify patterns in the casino data.  For example an online roulette wheel.  Feed that data into the network and allow it to play forward.  If there is any "non-randomness" in the system, the program should get a higher win rate/percentage then just randomly choosing a number, or black, or red etc...

Thoughts?

19  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: My contrarian conspiracy theories. on: April 02, 2013, 03:12:44 AM

Thanks for the comments.  I can see the U.N. sitting around a large table with all the countries saying

"We are all in way to much debt to get out of."

Someone at the end of the table says "Fine, lets just make a new currency."

"Ok, how do we get people to adopt it?"

"We tell them we don't like it."

I guess the main argument against this type of thinking is that the source code is open and you can review it to find anything "shady".  These types of things are fun to think about though.

Forex trader eh?  I played with that with fake money for a while and realized it was too fast for me.  I try to ride the dividend train these days in the hopes that slow and steady win the race.

Thanks again gentlemen.
