Heuréka!! It turned out that the retardd was just bootstrapping and was not binded to the socket thus the refuses for connection. I'm pisses. So much time wasted...
2  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: error: couldn't connect to server on: November 25, 2012, 06:56:48 AM
I tried every option possible for both client and server and still getting same error message. I even tried omitting the config file, listing all the options directly in command line still without any change.

Please, HELP? I'm fucking desperate here...
3  Other / Beginners & Help / error: couldn't connect to server on: November 24, 2012, 06:43:18 AM
I encountered a problem when trying to connect to bitcoind via CLI. I start bitcoind in daemon mode, reading all configuration from default config file but when i attempt to connect to daemon via RPC i get the error message stating: "couldn't connect to server".

Here's my config file:

Code:
# bitcoin.conf configuration file. Lines beginning with # are comments.

 # Network-related settings:

 # Run on the test network instead of the real bitcoin network.
 #testnet=0

 # Connect via a socks4 proxy
 #proxy=127.0.0.1:9050

 ##            Quick Primer on addnode vs connect            ##
 ##  Let's say for instance you use addnode=4.2.2.4          ##
 ##  addnode will connect you to and tell you about the      ##
 ##    nodes connected to 4.2.2.4.  In addition it will tell ##
 ##    the other nodes connected to it that you exist so     ##
 ##    they can connect to you.                              ##
 ##  connect will not do the above when you 'connect' to it. ##
 ##    It will *only* connect you to 4.2.2.4 and no one else.##
 ##                                                          ##
 ##  So if you're behind a firewall, or have other problems  ##
 ##  finding nodes, add some using 'addnode'.                ##
 ##                                                          ##
 ##  If you want to stay private, use 'connect' to only      ##
 ##  connect to "trusted" nodes.                             ##
 ##                                                          ##
 ##  If you run multiple nodes on a LAN, there's no need for ##
 ##  all of them to open lots of connections.  Instead       ##
 ##  'connect' them all to one node that is port forwarded   ##
 ##  and has lots of connections.                            ##
 ##       Thanks goes to [Noodle] on Freenode.               ##

And here's a pair of commands i use to run bitcoind (daemon, client):

Code:
[earl@b2x2:~/bitcoin_utils]$ bitcoind -daemon -server=1
Bitcoin server starting
[earl@b2x2:~/bitcoin_utils]$ bitcoind -listen=0 -server=0 help

I do not think I need to provide rpc related options when running a client as all information are mentioned in my config file. (Right?)

Any idea what I'm doing wrong? I had the working commands until they have been flushed out from my bash history and i'm not able to replicate them from scratch. I would be much grateful if anyone could help me with this one so I can finally go to sleep. :-)

Guess i got what i need.

Generating addresses

Code:
./vanitygen -k -o keys.txt ""

Mass import

Code:
#!/bin/bash

p=$(basename $0)
pywallet_bin="./pywallet.py"

if [ $# -lt 2 ];then echo "Usage: $p <VANITYGEN_FILE> <WALLET>"; exit 1; fi

file=$1
wallet=$2

if [ ! -f "$file" ];then echo "$p: file '$file' not found."; exit 1; fi
if [ ! -f "$wallet" ];then echo "$p: wallet '$wallet' not found."; exit 1; fi
if [ ! -f "$pywallet_bin" ];then echo "$p: pywallet '$pywallet_bin' executable not found"; exit 1; fi

private_keys=($(grep "Privkey: " "$file" | awk -F " " '{ print $2; }'))

echo "Private keys found: ${#private_keys[*]}"

for key in "${private_keys[@]}";
do
#echo $key
$pywallet_bin --datadir=$(dirname "$wallet") --wallet=$(basename "$wallet") --importprivkey=$key --dont_check_walletversion
done

exit 0

[earl@b2x2:~/.bitcoin]$ pywallet.py --datadir=./ --wallet=wallet.dat --dumpwallet | grep "$ADDRESS_VISIBLE_IN_BITCOIN_QT"

You probably are missing the error message.

Try just this.

 $ pywallet.py --dumpwallet

And if the wallet is encrypted, you'll need to add --password=PASSWORD

Well that was strange. I deleted the old wallet and let the bitcoin-qt generate a new one, then created a few new addresses, re-run pywallet and finally got what i need. :-)

And yes, there's a message about 'ecdsa' but I dont think I need that feature:

Quote
'ecdsa' package is not installed, pywallet won't be able to sign/verify messages
6  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Confused about addresses on: November 22, 2012, 07:07:54 PM
I'm trying to dump addresses from the wallet.dat using pywallet but the results confuse me. I expect to see all addresses visible via bitcoin-qt interface but when grepping the output from pywallet none of them are found.

Not sure why that is.

You could also try Gavin's bitcoin tools, which has a dumpwallet.

According to the README (https://github.com/gavinandresen/bitcointools):

Quote
These tools are becoming obsolete as we move away from using Berkeley DB in
Bitcoin-Qt/bitcoind.

If you are looking for a tool to manipulate the wallet.dat file, you might
want to try https://github.com/joric/pywallet

Again I'm running in the circles. Thanks to your reply I got the idea I'm doing something wrong with pywallet so I'll try to fiddle with it a little more.

Here's how i call pywallet:

Code:
[earl@b2x2:~/.bitcoin]$ pwd
/home/earl/.bitcoin
[earl@b2x2:~/.bitcoin]$ pywallet.py --datadir=./ --wallet=wallet.dat --dumpwallet | grep "$ADDRESS_VISIBLE_IN_BITCOIN_QT"
# empty result

You can torrent it (or technically most of it).  Quite a few seeds so it has pretty good download speeds.

There are some direct download links but not sure how up to date they are:

Thank you sir. You probably saved days of my life. I'll look into it.

Is there any chance I can download blockchain directly from FTP/HTTP? My problem is I had to switch back to Satoshi's client and now I have to wait until all the blocks are synchronized and it's taking so freaking long...

I tried to google it but probably used irrelevant keywords. The kick in the right place is all i need... Smiley

14  Other / Beginners & Help / Are these bitcoins services anonymous? on: November 16, 2012, 02:01:30 AM
Hello,
I would like to know whether services listed  in https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Trade#Dedicated.2FVirtual_Server_Hosting  and labeled as anonymous are truly anonymous. Meaning if they ignore requests from authorities to reveal IP address of the computer that submitted a registration, or any other logs that could lead to revealing the identity.

Not planning to do anything illegal just curious and i need to get 5 posts, so...

Hello,
finally registered and figured out all the restrictions. I would like to present a beta version of private databank and data marketplace we've been working on past few months. Payments are handled through Bitcoin network. Looking for opinions and testers. I think thorough details require a thread.
