I have a question. How big is the Monero blockchain? I decided to use the full client and I was wondering if 10gb is enough to sync the blockchain. Also I would like to ask how fast the syncing is.

10 GB is probably barely enough for the file on disk, although the actual blockchain is only about 1/3 of that since (some optimization remains to be done on the efficiency of storage use).

The speed of syncing varies greatly depending on your hardware and bandwidth. I can sync from scratch in 1-2 hours but others report a few days.

You using a SSD? I'm pretty sure my magnetic platter hard drive was the bottle neck for me.

My minimal memory made my HD work even harder during syncing.  After syncing NP.

I am quite surprised that this little treasure didn't garner any comment.  A lot of people in China are getting their very first exposure to XMR.  This bit of editorial content was echoed on numerous web properties.

When I clicked the link I couldn't make sense of it.  It certainly doesn't look like Chinese.  This is what I presume is the headline looks like.

I have a hunch that they will release the gui wallet sometime before Monero trading on AlphaBay begins on Sept 1.

Soon..

Well that might be icing on the cake as far as price rise.  Looking forward to the GUI myself.

Not happening before Sep 1.  I will ride the NYC subway naked if the GUI is released before Sept 1st

No you wont.

So you agree the GUI won't be released before Sept. 1

I was just thinking that I would certainly be arrested so you are correct there as well.  Didn't originally think because that's how slim of a possibility I think it is.

As for price speculation, even though those with skills far beyond mine are predicting significantly lower prices on the horizon I just don't see how that can happen.  Too much new interest and the dnms will not be a bust.

No spelling errors and no capitalization.  How much did you pay for that account?

Well, a pattern of higher lows begins on the 5 minute chart.  Then it becomes apparent on the 15 minute chart.  Later, the 30 minute chart.  Time will tell us.  But only after it is too late to act.

Right now, I am all-in.  If I get a better price, I may do a coinbase instant buy and fill wallets for friends and family, after about a 15 minute lag.  But I won't buy any more for myself in any case.  I own enough.  I am holding some for third parties, which I may be obligated to sell at some point between $10 and $25, but otherwise I'm hodling like Holdor for the foreseeable future, and it just isn't going to matter to me what the price is.  So expect to see much less of me in this thread.

Dude at work just asked me to buy him some.  He'll pay me on Monday but wants the current price.  I'm so nice that way.  He doesn't care if it goes to zero, but he will probably sell half when it doubles.  Just guessing here.  If that is a typical pattern, I expect there will be some resistance around 014

IMO (as if it matters) very well done.  Thank you for your posts of the last 2+ years.

Also thanks to the many that have contributed greatly to Monero from the beginning and have helped make it what it is now and is becoming.  Great vision and perspective.  I followed someone here very early on and I was clueless.  Little by little with the help of the community the fog was lifted.  I ofc am including the devs.  Ofc nothing is certain even though to me it feels that way and has for quite a while, even through the seemingly dark times.

As far as speculation; I don't think it will go near the low (420) that others have said the last day or 2.  Ever the optimist.  Welcome to the new shit.

Here is wisdom:-

Don't let the past govern your sense of market potential. You all know the reasons why you got into XMR, so don't be surprised when the inevitable starts to materialize. Don't let the inertia of the past 18 months govern your strategy in dealing with the next 3 months. The times have changed, and as volume continues to increase, the days of 200% oscillations are over.

From here, we only go up, with meaningless retraction. That's the nature of XMR fundamental confidence, which is exactly the reason you bought in.

Welcome to the new shit. Embrace it like you knew about it from day one.

Go forth, multiply, and enjoy.
327  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: August 25, 2016, 06:09:14 PM
The consolidation continues. I am inclined to see 0.008-0.0085 as a short term resistance now. Unless we get there in 2 days, this is confirmed, and the 0.01 double top is confirmed as well (2014,2016).

If we resume the grinding slide that I am forecasting, it may take months to reach the target 0.0042. And of course there is never a guarantee that it is reached. If great news come, it is likely to throw the grind scenario out of the window.

I enjoy your posts and i do like your math well explained, but Risto, i have to disagree on this point.
The volume is declining steadily, and i personaly do not see all of your prediction becoming true, i think this will be much faster and harder.

Let's wait, drink some tea and watch the birds are doing  Wink Smiley

It's a bit of a sloppy move but Risto knows how to cover his back.

Well, when people say MOON, Rocket starting, the Darknet buys Monero now and so on, that's all a very optimistic sight of what is actually happening. Like mentioned a few posts earlier to this, insider information, large bags of BTC to play with, manipulating some markets --> plural (did you watch the other noname coins yesterday), is obvious.

Of course i also would like to see XMR beeing the #1 cyrpto in the world used by everybody to do what everybody likes, but that is not the case, yet.
This IS manipulation, maybe the cashout of the bitfinex hack, and that is obvious. If you tell me this is "natural" growth of XMR, i would like to discus your arguments guys Shocked Roll Eyes

What is "manipulation", really? What is "natural"?

Of course a component of the rally is speculation due to the news on DNMs. I would even bet it is the largest component. These last few days are completely unprecedented in Monero-land; the correlation with the news is extremely strong. Is this speculation "manipulation"? There are of course other components as well. You seem to be assigning a high (nay, overwhelming) % to some other "manipulation" by those with "large bags of BTC to play with".

The XMR market represents the current consensus on the price of XMR. Part of that consensus is "manipulation"; part is "natural"; part might be "other". No market participant is exactly like another. You do not and cannot *know* the intent of the market participants except yourself. You can thus only guess at what you think is going on. When you say in the affirmative "This IS manipulation", you declare that which you do not know.

You request "our" arguments for "natural" growth, but provide none for "manipulation" beyond that it "is obvious".

Wise words. Couldn't describe that better as you did now.

Besides obvious self interest a reason why people see things differently could be...  Blind men and the elephant.

My gut feeling says we're heading towards 0.012.

We're clearly in the middle of a profound change.

I think your guy feeling is wrong but good luck to you if you are invested and plan on selling some at .012

Perhaps.

But of the several years I've been frequenting this thread I can't think of any occasions where I have been wrong as yet.

Yeah this guy rangedriver's gut is good.

Clearly I have underestimated the force of this move.  It appears as though stability will occur somewhere north of 0.01.  I don't have enough info yet to estimate where.  I gave up on market-making again, since these large impulsive moves are fatal to MMer profitability.  Holding rather too much BTC right now, hoping for a dip.

Edit: currently forming another bull flag.  Expecting an impulsive move past .01 later today.  How far past, is not with my comfortable domain of estimation.

This guy ain't bad either especially considering his uberty.  Your chance to right click aminorex Wink

I have held through ALL the ups and downs.
I'll consider selling a few when there are no zeros immediately to the right of the decimal point.

I hope someone can help:

Which would be the best for mining XMR:
1. Upgrading to an i7 that support 8 threads
2. Purchase a GTX1060 GPU

Almost in the same price range.

Any tips would be much appreciated!

Depends on some factors: how much is your electricity? How cool is your climate? How much noise can you tolerate?

A CPU will tend to be more efficient. That said, check the L2 cache of the i7. Each mining thread needs 2 MB cache. So, even if you have 8 threads, if you only have 6 MB cache, your going to mine with 3 threads, maybe 4.

That said, I know the new skylakes can do 60 hashes / second on 1 thread.
Pentium(R) CPU G4400 @ 3.30GHz

I thought it was 2MB of L3 cache per mining thread not L2.

Champagne and popcorn time...

Where is the top...?!   Seems we're taking a breather after pipping over .0065, but is there more to come?  Can't stop watching - just watching Polo troll box is delightful.

I guess we are too classy to be posting train pics, or 'boom' gifs?

I'm not sure but I think that train pics and such are not allowed Sad

Top?  We are presently at 0.65% of btc.  Paltry.

Number of Monero I have sold during this rise = 0

Edit:  I did buy a relatively small amount @420

Well now we have hit 0.0075 I wish I could say the same, as I have sold more than I wish I had (with hindsight).

I set up ladders of sells and buys as I have done since it first opened on Polo and I have stuck to prioritising accumulation while passively range trading constantly to average down my price per coin overall.  I wanted to maintain a 0.1% of supply holding, but tonight with it smashing many of my upper rungs so fast, I am below target by an amount I will struggle to claw back.  Of course I can't complain, although I just wish I could get BTC out of Polo quicker than the minimum limits allow.

It's been a fantastic 24 hours for those of us in in for the long term though....

And shame about the trains, we're a stuffy lot sometimes, a little exuberance is occasionally warranted IMHO.

The answer to your original question should include a timeframe which I did not give.  I assume the question was short and my answer was l o  n   g.  As I said a few months ago I'm giving this 3 years.

Also I no longer trade and haven't for a while for several reasons.  I'm content having my relative price lowered by the price rising.

Best of luck getting your precious Monero back.

It is about selective bias and insufficient data actually.

Ahh the meaning of life.

I hope I can get it done would be nice to mine this coin I have never mined a coin before. Glad I bought when I did it looks like people are getting into xmr could be the next big thing I have been reading about it sounds better then dash and I like that there are only 12 million coins not like 100 million. Dose anyone know how much this coin was when it first came out? Anyway thanks for the help!

http://monero.stackexchange.com/questions/9/how-many-monero-will-be-mined-in-total

Quote
The initial number of moneroj in existence will be approximately 18.4 million. However, once that number is reached, a perpetual tail emission of 0.3 xmr per minute will go into effect.

...how much this coin was when it first came out?

https://poloniex.com/exchange#btc_xmr

It looks like it started off really high, or just pumped initially to 0.01 btc and then went back down sharply at first and fluctuated over time.

So based on those links, if I did my maths correctly...there are approx 157680k XMR created per year? - thats not much inflation ...very impressive

0.3 XMR created per minute so ....0.3 x 525600 (minutes in a year) = 157680

0.3/min is the eternal tail emission not what is currently being mined.  Now that blocks are 2 minutes it will be 0.6/block.  Currently the base block reward is just under 11 and it decreases ever so slightly each block.  When it gets to 0.6/2min block there it shall remain.

Here is an emissions spread sheet and how it compares to btc.

OK couldn't help myself.  Just bought at 420.  Even though I have no use for that number or it's relations.

Yes 2 is the current minimum mixin is 2 but will be raised to 4.  Therefore it seems to me that 4 is a good recommended minimum now.  I use anywhere from 4 to 10.

Is now a good time to buy XMR or do you guys think it will come down some and offer a better entry.

I would wait till it comes down to at least 0.003, but I'm pretty much always wrong...

Not.

You have made some astute calls that I ignored in the past, because hope.
