201  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Satoshi proposed a gentlemans agreement to postpone GPU mining (2009) on: August 30, 2013, 09:29:56 AM
Yeah that's true I suppose.

I'm sure I often hear people spouting things like "Satoshi never envisioned GPU or pooled mining", so I just found it kinda interesting that it was proposed to him this long ago, and he answered as if he had always known it was coming, but was trying to stay quiet about it for as long as possible....
202  Bitcoin / Mining / Satoshi proposed a gentlemans agreement to postpone GPU mining (2009) on: August 30, 2013, 09:22:30 AM
Just a general FYI I suppose, I found it interesting...  Roll Eyes

The average total coins generated across the network per day stays the same.  Faster machines just get a larger share than slower machines.  If everyone bought faster machines, they wouldn't get more coins than before.

We should have a gentleman's agreement to postpone the GPU arms race as long as we can for the good of the network.  It's much easer to get new users up to speed if they don't have to worry about GPU drivers and compatibility.  It's nice how anyone with just a CPU can compete fairly equally right now.
203  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [IN PROGRESS] A new Bitcoin forum. Design paper finished. on: August 28, 2013, 08:44:45 AM

This is quite funny. I deleted a post because the person is making biased claims and failing to read, am I a dictator now? Lmao.

There is no other way to say this but yes. You have revoked his expression of his opinion and deleted his posts, because you didn't like them. That is censorship. His posts did not contain any sign of spam.
Get your basics straight and rethink your position in this case. E4xit is totally right.

The bit I am most concerned about is that you still do not seem to understand.
204  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [IN PROGRESS] A new Bitcoin forum. Design paper finished. on: August 28, 2013, 08:28:25 AM
The thread has developed into an episode of Keyboard Warriors. To stop the spam on this thread, a new thread will be made on the test forum when it is up.

Please tell me more about how I censor people. I deleted 1 post because the poster ignored my messages in a chatroom, (is still ignoring my PM,) didn't read my post on why I changed it, and because the poster bashes me due to personal relations.

Why are you so important that you can't be ignored?  If I bash theymos and then ignore him, is it OK for him to delete my posts here?

If you're bashing just because you don't like him, I wouldn't call it censorship if he deletes your post once because he gets aggravated. If he deletes your posts excessively, then there is a problem.

So if I don't like you and "bash" you, you can then censor me, but that isn't censorship? Is that really what you are trying to sell to me right now? I'm not sure you have thought this through...You do realise that that is just like, your opinion man.

You say you would be allowed to delete my post "once" if I did this, but "excessively" would be "a problem", so what about twice? Is that a problem? What about three deletions?

Perhaps somebody with a little more "life experience" (read: age) might be good to have on board as an advisor when you try to start your new forum to help you understand better what might constitute censorship, and when in fact you might be reacting disproportionately to something that you don't personally like, for whatever reason.

Or perhaps you should simply better outline your own definition of censorship, as it obviously differs from the standard definition that everyone else works to:

Censorship is the suppression of speech or other public communication which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, politically incorrect or inconvenient as determined by a government, media outlet or other controlling body.

Notice how it specifically metions objectionable and harmful speech/communication, you seem to have completely missed what the term censorship is about, but as I have suggested, you could modify the term to your own liking in your forums' rules, I guess.

Just something to think about
205  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin wallet QT any better for mac? on: August 27, 2013, 04:58:34 PM
Sorry for the late reply, went to Notting Hill Carnival and things got a little bit out of hand! Cheesy

Anyway, blockchain finished downloading with 0.8.4RC2 while I was away, I have just got back and closed down Bitcoin-QT, restarted the computer and re-opened the app: NO DATABASE ERROR.

Hooray, perhaps this app is now really slightly more suitable for those running OSX now?

Edit: Database Corrupt again. Sad
206  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin wallet QT any better for mac? on: August 23, 2013, 09:22:02 PM
I am synced up to block 240653 so far, so hopefully tomorrow morning I should have an idea of whether 0.8.4 RC2 has helped me (specifically) on OSX.

Just a slightly off topic question, does loading blocks from disk (bootstrap) use GPU? CPU? Single core, multiple cores? etc... Basically I am disappointed that it took me at least 9 hours to load my blocks from disk, before any downloading even started....
207  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin wallet QT any better for mac? on: August 23, 2013, 12:06:49 PM
I use Bitcoin-QT on OSX but on a (well power-supplied) iMac, so I do not believe that these issues are anything to do with power supply for me, but I still have corrupt database probably the last 4 times I tried to re-open the program (after successfully re-downloading the blockchain about 4 times)...

Have downloaded the 0.8.4 test DMG and it is currently importing blocks from disk (bootstrap.dat) and then after it finally catches up to the present, I will shutdown the app (properly) and will see for sure if 0.8.4 brings any improvement at all for me...

For the record, I do not think that my database has not become corrupted on shutting down (or re-opening) of 0.8.3 a single time yet.
208  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: bitcoin-0.8.3-macosx Database continuously corrupting on: August 19, 2013, 07:31:20 PM
It has no problem in downloading the blockchain, in fact, I can even download to 100% if I leave the computer on so that it downloads in a single continuous session. But as soon as I close the application and re-open, it will become corrupted Sad
209  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / bitcoin-0.8.3-macosx Database continuously corrupting on: August 19, 2013, 10:21:52 AM
Hi,

I am using bitcoin-0.8.3-macosx.dmg on a late 2012 iMac.

I am experiencing an issue, where is see error "System Error: Database Corrupted" virtually on every startup now, which has rendered the program completely useless to me (and kinda locks me out of Armory, which is why i need QT in the first place...)

I have tried downloading the blockchain about 3 times (took roughly 2 weeks  Embarrassed) and also downloaded bootstrap.dat and imported, which worked and allowedme to become fully synced with the network. Upon closing Bitcoin-Qt and restarting computer, reopening was instantly met with corruption notice again.

I think I vaguely remember seeing Gavin Andresen post that the OSX bug is being worked on but is difficult to track down, so I am wondering a few things...

  • can I somehow help by providing error reports or any other info on my system/config...?
  • is there a stable release of QT I can use on OSX without this issue... I would really like to be able to access (all of) my funds which are currently in armory...
  • when importing using bootstrap.dat, is there some way I can tell my computer to use more threads/higher CPU...? I think that with an i7 I should be able to import the bootstrap file slightly faster than I am currently...
    (3.1GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz, 16GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM, 1TB Fusion Drive, NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 512MB GDDR5)

Thanks.
210  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Bitcoin blockchain data torrent on: August 01, 2013, 10:16:19 PM
Will Bitcoin-QT versions 0.7.1+ recognise that the file is there automagically without having to run the binary with the parameter '-loadblock='?

Also, just out of interest, does Bitcoin-QT import the blocks from disk using just a single CPU core?

I am just wondering as I have an i7 (3.1 GHz) CPU, but activity monitor doesn't show more than 70% CPU (max is 800%)... If it is single core, is there any way to increase this?

Thanks
211  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Bitcoin blockchain data torrent on: August 01, 2013, 05:19:01 PM
Thanks for replying guys, although, the two bits of info were a little bit conflicting:

Quote
Put it anywhere, then run bitcoin with the "-loadblock=/path/to/file" parameter.

Quote
bootstrap.dat goes into the data directory.  The same directory as debug.log and peers.dat are located.

I think Jeff's is just the 'safe' way, or for if you are running an older version of Bitcoin-QT...

If anyone else gets stuck like me, what I did was:

OSX using Bitcoin-QT versions 0.7.1+

1) Open a terminal window
2) Open a finder window.
3) In the finder window, navigate to /Applications/ and the ctrl+click on 'Bitcoin-QT' and choose 'Show package contents'
4) Navigate to /Contents/MacOS/ and then drag the file in there ('Bitcoin-QT') into the terminal window
5) add a space into the terminal window, after the 'Bitcoin-QT' file, then type:

-loadblock=

So in the terminal window you will have something like this:

"Your-iMac:~ user$ /Applications/Bitcoin-Qt.app/Contents/MacOS/Bitcoin-Qt -loadblock="

Dont press anything else yet...

6) Next, with the finder window selected again, navigate to the location of your 'Bootstrap.dat' file
7) Drag this file into the terminal window, so that it adds it onto the end of the command, which will look something like:

"Your-iMac:~ user$ /Applications/Bitcoin-Qt.app/Contents/MacOS/Bitcoin-Qt -loadblock=/path/to/file"

Hit enter to run.

Hope that this helps someone else Smiley
212  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Bitcoin blockchain data torrent on: August 01, 2013, 08:48:48 AM
Ok thanks. Any idea on how to do that?  Roll Eyes

Edit: I am on OSX, I think I could do it on windows, but not particularly familiar with terminal and how to run apps from it with parameters in OSX
213  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: bitcoin.co.th trading suspended on: August 01, 2013, 06:36:39 AM
In this context
What a bunch of retards gather sometimes on these forums?

We all should be grateful to OP for the timely info he gave us about Thai central bank order to suspend his Bitcoin business. Instead bunch of idiots decided to blame him for bank's decision.

becoin, I think I understand now why your ignore glows so brightly....

You appear to have responded to this 'announcement' from Dave by blindly accepting it and calling those who ask for evidence "retards". Do you have the capacity for individual critical thinking?

It also appears from your above statement, that you have missed the entire point of this thread; no-one as far as I can tell is bothering to argue over whether Dave111223 had a meeting with BoT (although it has not been proved, it is not really important), what we are debating is his outrageous claim that "Bitcoin is illegal in Thailand".

-ignore-

kthx
214  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Bitcoin blockchain data torrent on: August 01, 2013, 06:18:15 AM
So I am in the process of downloading the latest version of this torrent now, but still slightly confused as to how I use it...

I am using Bitcoin Qt 0.8.3 Beta, so it should support auto-import of this file, right?

Just a little unsure of where to put it, and if I need to delete the folders "blocks" and/or "Chainstate" and the files "db.log", "debug.log" or "peers.dat"?

I am on OSX so presume that it is going somewhere inside the /Users/will/Library/Application Support/ folder?

Thanks

Thanks Dave!

(Not entirely sure why this appears in the google image search for "Thanks Dave", but oh well!)  Huh
216  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: bitcoin.co.th trading suspended on: July 31, 2013, 02:00:50 PM
as I did read the whole thread through and can see that it may have appeared to you that people were attacking you personally, when I think really they were havign difficulty communicating that they did not believe your 'story' without the provision of credible sources
There's a fine line.

For me it's difficult not to attack him personally, since he personally spread this fake news which the stupid media copy-pasted without bothering to check if it was legit...

While it's not his fault if the media are stupid, it is definitely his fault if he spread FUD.

Lohoris, you are of course correct that each individual should be help accountable for his/her own actions (unless perhaps there is a mental condition, or age (maturity) which has not been reached.

In the spirit of 'innocent until proven guilty', I was just trying to give him a chance to provide his sources, before too denouncing him as a fraud/FUD-spreader!

But I think, judging by what the Thai representatives from among us in the forum have kindly translated, it appears that  FUD-spreader he may be Wink
217  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: bitcoin.co.th trading suspended on: July 31, 2013, 01:21:55 PM
Dave111223,

Thank you for replying. I have actually never said that I did not believe you (you can check if you like), I only asked you for your sources, as you had provided none.

I understand however, why you may have defaulted to this hostile view of my questions, as I did read the whole thread through and can see that it may have appeared to you that people were attacking you personally, when I think really they were havign difficulty communicating that they did not believe your 'story' without the provision of credible sources.

thanks.

You have also agreed that there is "...nothing on paper." - Unverified
Why do you keep insisting there should be something on paper? Is Bitcoin on paper?

"On paper" is a commonly used western phrase, meaning that the idea being discussed (usually, but not exclusively orally) has been laid down properly.
In this context, it would be taken (by a westerner) to mean "laid down by law (officially)".

I, of course, do not want him to print out the original article on paper, and take a picture of it for me.

Apologies if the idiom was above your understanding of English (or you are not a native speaker etc).

thanks.
219  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: bitcoin.co.th trading suspended on: July 31, 2013, 01:08:08 PM
Dave111223,

Please accept my apologies for this. I have amended my post accordingly.

Please feel free to rebut the unverified bits of information identified within the post in any order you so choose.

thanks.
220  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: bitcoin.co.th trading suspended on: July 31, 2013, 12:45:21 PM
dave111223,

You claim to have had a meeting "with about 15 members of the Bank of Thailand in attendance" - unverified

You claim that they have told you "the following Bitcoin activities are illegal in Thailand: Unverified

  • Buying Bitcoins
  • Selling Bitcoins
  • Buying any goods or services in exchange for Bitcoins
  • Selling any goods or services for Bitcoins
  • Sending Bitcoins to anyone located outside of Thailand
  • Receiving Bitcoins from anyone located outside of Thailand

You (suspiciously) deleted a post whereby you claimed that the meeting/source was "As credible as sitting in the meeting myself, listening to the words coming out of their mouths"- Suspicious

You have also said that "When a senior official at a central bank tells you point-blank, "buying or selling bitcoins is illegal"" -Unverified

You have also said that "Alt-coins were discussed at the meeting, same rules apply." - Unverified

You have also said that "...for there to be any penalty it would have to go through the courts..." Seems sound

You quoted your lawyer in Thialand as having said that "In my home country of America, the fundamental basis of law is that every act is LEGAL, unless there is a law that makes that act illegal.  Thailand’s fundamental basis of law is quite different – in Thailand, every act is ILLEGAL, unless there is a law (and process, and procedure) to make it legal." - Unverified

You then said that "I'll make no further comment on the source document as it is already comprehensive." - Source is dubious

Your comments have then moved away from the topic at hand and morphed into insulting other members, and calling them out on semantics.

You have also agreed that there is "...nothing on paper." - Unverified

I think it should be your duty, as you were alledgedly involved in this meeting first hand, and then proceeded to act as lead journalist in the matter, to clear some of these unverified claims up.

You will be aware from above posters, that your story has garnered world-wide attention, and, if reliable, then you of course should have nothing to hide....

The longer that you hide/don't respond/fail to provide evidence, the more it looks like you may have mis-interpreted something (or perhaps you lawyer mis-interpreted something, or perhaps your lawyer's translator mis-interpreted something, idk) and the more it looks as if this "Original Source" of yours (i.e. YOUR OWN WEBSITE) is just as credible as me, sitting here, saying that I just got off the phonewith Thailand, and guess what, they told me that "Bitcoin is legal"

Edit: Strikethrough re/
e4xit you are quoting the article as my words, please correct this.
