The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Science and Technology Directorate, recently unveiled a list of 13 small businesses working towards “the development of new cyber security technology.” The companies are part of the 2016 Small Business Innovation Research program. Each was awarded approximately $100,000 in funding, for a total of $1.3 million, and four are using blockchains in their product.

An anonymous hacking group calling themselves the Shadow Brokers are selling documents in what they are calling “the Equation Group Cyber Weapons Auction.” The winner gets hacking and exploit tools allegedly stolen from the US National Security Agency (NSA). As a demonstration of their product, the group released 40% of the large cache of files.

The U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) recently announced a new bitcoin auction. Just over 2,719 bitcoins are to be sold to a single winner on Monday, 22 August. Worth about $1.6 million at current market rates, the coins come from “various federal criminal, civil and administrative cases,” according to the Marshals Service.
