1  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Instawallet Security Breach on: April 01, 2013, 08:13:04 PM
Someone on HN pointed out that the transfer happened an hour or two before the site went down. Can anyone confirm this? It looks like the transfer happened about an hour before *this thread* appeared, but did this thread start immediately after the site came down?

How safe are amazon gift cards? Can the sender "chargeback" a gift card (eg, use the code before I do, or otherwise steal it)?

If gift cards are safe, I'd sell you 50 BTC for an amazon gc. I'd want to use clearcoin.

Ah darn. What frustrating news! I definitely really liked this service.

Anyway, please check your coincard email, mndrix. I sent you 50 BTC for an order I made right before your site went down for maintenance. I now see why I haven't received the paypal funds.
4  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: selling drugs and money laundering: the potential downfall of bitcoin on: April 08, 2011, 04:16:43 PM
It seems to me that using drug dealing and other illegal markets as a taking off point for bitcoin is incredibly short sighted. It may work for a while up until the bitcoin network gets branded as a haven for illegal activity. Even if that doesn't trigger a crackdown, the negative perception will keep legitimate businesses from entering. Personally, I support a policy of no illegal activity on the main bitcoin forums and wiki. It would also be wise to keep talk of using bitcoins to overthrow the government to a minimum.
5  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What if bitcoins were used in high-frequency trading? on: April 06, 2011, 10:33:05 PM
Call me a dreamer but I would like Bitcoin to demonstrate anarcho-capitalism. You know, without government involvement?
Keep dreaming.

I totally agree with S3052.

BitCoin is protocol, not a political philosophy.  The latter can be your reason for supporting the former, but don't confuse them.
I agree that we need a trustworthy established forex. If a large institution doesn't throw its weight behind bitcoin, all it'll ever be is a highly volatile currency used by a few thousand computer geeks with fringe political leanings. There's no way I can convince my local coffee shop to start using bitcoin if they're totally dependent on small operations like CoinPal to convert their btc earnings to usd (and, as much as we'd like them to keep their btc as btc, they will want to do this). The same goes for operations like MyBitcoin. Maybe we totally trust these organizations, but the view from the outside is much different ("you want me to wire my money all over the world, then convert it on mtgox, then store it in mybitwhat? No thanks, I'll use paypal.").

Sounds like a neat idea. I'm in.
