4  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: What are the best alternatives to SHA256 ? on: April 28, 2011, 05:17:12 AM
I'd love to see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BLAKE_(hash_function) used instead of SHA256.
I don't think a more complex algorithm could favor general CPU's, custom ASIC's will always be faster.

How sure is it that the "store of value" call on bitcoins is really correct?

well davidonpda of bitcoinusa.com said:
Some information we have received from the Department of the Treasury that may help others or existing exchangers expand their presence in the United States.
We asked for a ruling on Bitcoin, and bitcoin is determined to be "Stored Value" and FinCen regulations do not apply if $1000 per day per person is exchanged.
Here is a specific ruling on Stored Value that applied to our situation: http://www.fincen.gov/statutes_regs/guidance/html/fin-2009-r001.html

As long as you do not process large amount of USD on USA territory, you do not need a license as Money Services Business.
It is *not* illegal to use bitcoins.

Quote
Bitcoin is considered a stored value product, comparable to a coupon/card which you can buy, give away, sell and use to buy goods or services.
Stored value is defined as "funds or monetary value represented in digital electronics format (whether or not specially encrypted) and stored or capable of storage on electronic media in such a way as to be retrievable and transferable electronically.
The coupons/Cards can be loaded with up to $1,000 per day and $2,500 per month.
In addition, our regulations define a money services business to include a seller or redeemer of stored value who sells or redeems stored value in an amount greater than $1,000 per person per day in one or more transactions.
As service provider for the Arranger, engaged in the marketing, sale, loading and reloading of the Cards only as an intermediary between the Arranger and its selling agents, the Company would not be a seller or redeemer of stored value as that term is defined in our regulations. Rather, the Company would be engaging in providing back-office services in connection with the provision of a stored value product.

What kind of revenue has this been bringing in, if any at all?

da2ce7, what are you? Made of money? Where do you keep getting it from?

Well... it isn't making money, yet.

So is it fully functional then ?

Must first understand the fact that Facebook is already the largest information database bank in the world. And who controls the information controls the world!

Reminds me of this presentation: http://albumoftheday.com/facebook/

Got me thinking, has anyone started working on an app that integrates Bitcoin with Facebook? That may help get more people to use it.

From the Facebook Credits Terms and Conditions:
"You may not accept Credits as payment for a currency or other stored value item that can be used outside of the application."

Bitcoins are considered a stored value item.

Can anyone confirm that in the existing client it still is a bad idea to do transaction with more than 2 decimals precision ?
Does this "dust change" situation still happen when the transaction is less than 0.01 bitcoins ?
Because it's ease to change rpc.cpp to round to 4 decimals precision, and i imagine a lot of people would like this to be the case.

Because GET is a free keyword and using the SEND keyword requires a monthly investment per shortcode.
I plan to add this service with as low profit margin as possible, just to get some experience with setting up a bitcoin service,
making bitcoin available to as much people as possible results in a flow of new bitcoin users.
Each intake of new bitcoin users seems to increase mtgox prices, thus increasing the value of our bitcoins.  Grin
Afterwards when i implement an exchange or other services, there might be enough income to buy into specific keywords.
