Africa like most of the world is in dire need of good political leadership.  All the best with your project.

Thank you! So is the United States- I would say that we are lucky to have crypto to operate somewhat outsides the constraints of unjustified taxation.

Physical goods is the least of Africas problems. Your clean water will literally drown in the sand until the leadership problem is solved.

"Ngango Cho'kto, 4 years, would like to eat. Won't you help? Your dollar can feed him for a year." Sounds oh so easy and compelling. Couldn't be further from the truth though. If it's just to clear your conscience, go right ahead. But don't misguide yourself into thinking that will solve anything or help anyone.

^^^ This!

OP, if you have NGO experience, you should know that raising the funding is never a major problem, getting someone to develop the software and configure the hardware needed is also relatively easy, but getting the funds distributed to their intended target is an impossible task in Africa.

Years ago, when the CPU mining was still feasible, I designed this cute Solar Miner. 125Wp panel + 3A MPPT + 1kWh lithium battery + 15W TDP Mobo + GPRS dongle = +/- $350, earning some $100-$150 per month in Bitcoins. I also had a solution for the Bitcoin to Cash conversion, easy and low-cost, the African way.

But what I could not solve is the comfort the NGOs needed in order to get involved with this. At the end, I had to abandon the idea, as I find it was not feasible, not in Africa.

After reading this OP I went and re-run the figures to see if my contraption will be feasible mining Litecoin today. And it sure was! Also, for little bit more, one could configure it to use BFL's 5GHs Miner instead of the Mobo, making this even more profitable that it was intended to be in the first place.

But I am still convinced that although technically one can create a mining solution for Africa, one should not do because is never worth it - at the end this will see everyone involved wasting their time and money while the local leaders enriching themselves again and Ngango Cho'kto, the proverbial 4 year old, will get nothing out of this, will probably die of hunger and some exotic diseases!

Uh, 'Africans' is a pretty vague term and the socio-economic standing varies from the poorest in the world to some really well do to folks. You should probably aim for a country rather then a Continent.

That said, Africa isn't in need of purchasing physical goods with crypto-currency, they are in need of fair market prices for raw materials of which they have incredible amounts of. It's a lovely idea, but misguided. As much of 'Free Aid" has always been.

I will address the problems of dependency on aid and feasibility/specificity which most people are addressing.

Firstly I would say this project could be whatever we want it to be. Weex on the Litecoin channel is always interested in making a crypto exchange for local African currencies. Visit his (new) forum at bitcoins.co.ke

I do agree we should pick a country with enough infrastructure and stability for us to be successful.

I don't believe in giving free money to people for no reason, either. I do think you are overblowing the notion that everybody in Africa lives with a gun pointed at their head by the local army. Just as you accused me of being naive in saying we should send water bottles to Africa to help people out with little access to clean and cheap water, you then became naive in thinking that Africa is a war-torn hellhole where all money disappears.

I'm up for whatever ideas you have. Keep in mind that funding this project is through people running their CPU miners. They likely don't have a clue what their computer is doing, but are more interested in helping people through very little exertion on their own. It is sort of like freerice.com but even easier.

Gopher I will PM you about your rig because I am always interested and working on solar rigs and portable miners/FPGAs. I'm working on all 3 aspects as we speak.

Thanks and I will update the main post to reflect this discussion!

Hi everybody,

CURRENT OBJECTIVE: IMPLEMENT A CPU BROWSER MINER (see litecoinpool). Please help find someone willing to do this!

We should all get together and make a website that runs litecoinpool's javascript browser CPU miner to allow people to mine a small amount of coins.

We can then donate/exchange these coins into cash and give it to an organization that you, I, and local African non-profits can set up to promote the purchase of clean water, food, condoms etc in an African country of our choice.

I am a busy person but I have the money and years of NGO experience to throw at this.

Please feel free to use this topic as a brainstorm for how to best develop the project. If you have the minimal level of web dev and design experience necessary to get this going, please post here.

Costs
-Domain: 12.95 per year
-Hosting: 4.00 per month

Plan
-CPU and or GPU mine profitable alt-coins
-Exchange for BTC via BTC-E and etc
-Convert this into cash or physical goods, whichever is easiest
-Get goods on the ground and in the right hands in Africa
-Facilitate free markets and vital health services (food, water, AIDS prevention) to get micro-economic growth going.

Shouldn't be that hard.

Get excited and do something with your spare time to help others who need it....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_%28PPP%29_per_capita
Notice that the price of 1 Bitcoin is more than many Africans make in a month in Mozambique, Congo, Guinea, Malawi etc...

Thanks!
64  Economy / Lending / Re: Looking for a 0.122 BTC loan. 50 % interest. 2 weeks. on: May 08, 2013, 04:01:06 AM
Upon contacting the borrower about tomorrow's repayment he has told me he is unable too..

Waiting to hear back on his plan's, but at today's value this is less than a $20 loan.

Odd situation you can not even pay that back, apparently borrower will be investing into some other project first.

bye bye money Smiley

It's some 430-440 USD here in Bosnia.. I don't have a clue how to build a rig, otherwise I'd definitely explore an option to buy it in USA.

I can walk you through it or direct you to someone who can Cheesy pretty easy, just expensive at first!

PMing you, friend

Another alt-coin project that hasn't gotten as much attention as it deserves is:

https://bitmessage.org/wiki/Main_Page

It's not actually a coin, but rather uses the block chain to be able to send encrypted messages that are verifiably from a particular sender. It's very cool and maybe something we should all adopt in the future.

I use this regularly- will there ever be a block chain explorer?

would it be of any use? You couldn't read what was in the blockchain anyway.

Isn't this a block explorer for bitmessage http://bitmessage.hyse.org/ ?

Surely there are more messages than this? And they are publicly readable? Weird

I do not have any samples to send but am confident you will be pleased with my work and am willing to also revise if necessary to come to a mutually agreeable final product.  I am happy to get started with the subject in the OP if you would like and will send no later than end of day 5/8 if that would work for you (last week of school else could commit to same-day turnaround in future).  Worst case scenario you can call me a big fat phony on the forums who does indeed NOT right gud.

I dont have a set time frame as of yet. BUT I could send you a few ltc to get started maybe tomorrow. PM me for details and send your btc or ltc address and how much you think you will need to get started. Even if I'm not satisfied with teh final product, im not going to cause a fuss, I can fill in the rest, I'm not that bad of a writter, just not good at writing mundane essays.

If this deal falls through, PM me and I will take the job. I am an intelligent person and have done more writing at a top US university than I should have Cheesy

don't waste your time... fuck you occupy

If this is a ban-able offense please inform me and i will edit my post.

Not sure if it is bannable Smiley, but specifics would be nice.  Why do you dislike it?

The below post sums up my feelings pretty well Smiley

If they were NASA engineers they would have had enough money to make this into something. Digital monetarism is no good Cheesy

Sorry if I sound/sounded angry!

I don't think there is a demand. I enthusiastically proposed something like this long ago and it was completely shot down. And that was without asking for $28k in donations.

The pejorative name given it was "Inflatacoin".
70  Economy / Marketplace / Re: What are Some Good Ways To Earn Passive Income With Bitcoins? on: May 07, 2013, 12:01:50 PM
I set up a "gambling business" involving public domain ebooks, but so far, no one seems to be interested. Link below.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=197060

I considered joining a Bitcoin mining pool, but I do not internet access at home, so I rely on using public internet. Unless it's possible to mine without any computers on, do you know of some good ways to earn passive income? How much money can you earn in a week?

You can give me USD and I will give you the equivalent share of profits of one of my mining rigs Smiley

You could also loan out BTC to your friends and break their legs if they don't pay

73  Economy / Computer hardware / Selling 7950s to NON-US customers on: May 07, 2013, 11:48:22 AM
Hi everybody,

I know you guys are getting burned paying for customs in the UK and EU, so I am looking to help you all out.

The average price for a Sapphire/Gigabyte 7950 is around 405 USD (not including shipping), correct?

Here in the US it is about 310 depending on shipping and rebates. Shipping from NY to London via USPS ranges from 25-75 dollars depending on time (4-14 days) and insurance (I can select whatever you like).

By my math that leaves about a 30-50 margin between prices, and that is not factoring in the costs you would incur paying shipping and exchange rate fees yourself.

If you are interested in this deal, I will be as transparent as possible with you. We can share private shipping and contact info as well as have Skype calls. I feel I am a pretty trustworthy person, so I will try to keep risk to a minimum for you.

PM me for offers, more accurate quotes, and more questions. Thanks!

Looking for any:

5830
5850
5870
6950
7950

(in working conditions)

Unfortunately, I can only pay via PayPal since I need those cards in order to get BTC/LTC.  See get the conundrum I'm faced with?  Please PM me your offers.  I know I'm still fairly new on here with not too many post but I'm sure all ya' "detectives" out there could compile up my life's history with a click on Google.  I have nothing to hide, just looking for decent offers on the above GPUs.  So.. lemme know!  Wink

Kudos,
Jay

I am in NYC area and can get you 7950s, PM me
75  Economy / Goods / WTS Thousands of collectors stamps on: May 07, 2013, 11:08:53 AM
Hi everybody,

PS: I will do bulk offers or pay per stamp Cheesy

I have a large (10,000+) collection of international and US stamps, all VFNH. I will index prices to USD at the market value of Bitcoin/Litecoin (or any other currency provided you wait for me to exchange it at BTC-E)!

If you have never invested in stamps before, I am looking to give you a great deal. This collection was the life's work of my grandfather and he is very anxious to see it sold onto someone who would like to get started.

Stamps, like luxury cars and artwork, hold value over time vs. USD and are usually quite liquid and way less volatile than crypto-currencies.

Below are some examples of what stamps we have, I can provide pictures if you like! Otherwise you can look them up in the online catalogs.

Scott 300 f-vfnh Retail 13.50   Price 6.00
Scott 367 Lincoln's 100th Birthday Anniversary Retail 14.90   Price 7.00

Washington-Franklin Heads:
Scott 383 F-VFNH  Retail  8.00   Price 4.00
Scott 374 F-VFLH   Retail 14.50  Price 7.00
Scott 406 F-VFNH  Retail 11.00  Price 5.50
Scott 408 VFNH     Retail  3.00   Price 1.50
Scott 411 VFNH     Retail  12.50 Price 7. 00
Scott 441 F-VFNH  Retail 2.70    Price 1.40
Scott 503 F-VFNH Plate Single Retail 18.00++ Price 10.00

Well, this is pretty sad.... so Litecoiner, ABitBack and MyEdAccount (and I'm not that certain even about that last one) are the ONLY places to get Litecoins other than mining them or buying them on the exchanges? C'mon.... there has to be SOME other places out there.

These things cost money and time

I put my address in several hours ago, still nothing.
From the stats page, seems that nothing is getting paid out;

We'll see tomorrow am, as I'll give it the benefit of the doubt until midnight PST.

It's really hard to run a faucet.
80  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [LTC] Browser Miner Other That litecoinpool's? on: April 17, 2013, 07:00:49 PM
I understand what he's looking for but i just wanted to tell him that if you can browser-mine, you should be able to mine with cpu miner as well - even if your access is restricted.

I believe OP's intention is to use the work computers without needing to install software directly onto the machines which is why he is specifically seeking a browser-based web app...

No installations needed to mine with cpu miner... As far as i've seen, browser-mining is VERY slow, at least much slower than any alternative...
