I guess everything is relative. For me, it was mostly about starting to use a safe VPN (that accepts bitcoins). I think I had most bases covered before that.

Checklist:

1. Filesystem encryption.
2. Password management.
3. Individually encrypted wallets.
4. Local firewall.
5. Cron virus scan.
6. Sane file permissions.
7. VPN (with failsafe switch).

8. Encrypted wallets stored on several locations.

Todo:

1. Paper backup in safe.

I have to say, even if Bitcoin would plummet the next day or so, all this has forced me to read up on computer security. Always something.

Or, I could just join everyone else (except for proudhon), and watch the price ticker move us all closer to an early retirement on a beach somewhere.

So... It's getting time to order myself a sturdy safe for my paper wallet. Anyone else gets the same feeling? :p

I agree with the basics of your post, but I think that merchants will sort this out over time. As people are going to be seeing prices in mBTC or uBTC they will also start thinking about them in those terms.

This is about the time most transfers to SEPA accounts are verified, at least that is my limited experience.

The reasons for me to use Bitstamp are these:

1. No fees for depositing money through SEPA.
2. Requires only 3 confirmations when depositing bitcoins.

If you are waiting in line for verification, the number of people waiting for verification is visible on the site as far as I remember.

I prefer Bitstamp, but I don't know if they have the server capacity to handle a horde of goxxed traders looking for better trading grounds. They sure could use the volume, but at a sustainable rate.
