Recently some large deposits of shale gas have been discovered in my country.
Of course , it has sparked controversy if we should start exploit because of the risks they may pose.

I would like to ask you , since we have members from other countries here:
1) Do you agree with shale gas exploration in general?
2) Would still agree withit  if those drilling will be done close to the community where you leave?
...

I live in an area with extensive fracking (south texas) and really am not seeing any environmental abuses or questionable practices.  There's been a lot of fear mongering and misinformation.  Hell, we have solar power and windmill fields and fracking all jumbled up together in the field....

anecdotal information does not apply to the rest of the population though. i don't know enough about the impact of fracking, but it sure seems like quite a few towns really hate it.

I think we should be looking at consistent and renewable alternatives rather than digging for stuff out of the ground that will run out eventually.

http://rt.com/usa/texas-fracking-earthquakes-azle-445/
Is this any different from fracking!

Seems like chevron just resumed work ... bigger protest?

Bravo!! on the first protest ... now come back with 10 times that many people!

Where im from people are docile and they sit on the ground and hold hands and get sprayed in the face with mace and then they get hauled away and nothing happens!

If you let them, these companys will rape your homeland of its natural resources!

hey there.. its not on top of the buildings. Its the whole building. "Vertical Gardens", Indoor Hydroponic, No soil needed..

That can be taken out on a small scale. May be it can employ around one thousand people. What about the rest? remember that Detroit is (or was) a million+ city.

Yeah not big but thats a 1000 people with jobs and paychecks that actually gets spent in the community at grocery stores and other local businesses like coffee shops or burger joints or whatever.. I know its small but you start somewhere!

One building , tomatoes the next building salad, next building pot, next ....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YH4w-xIOxcs

"endless harvest!!!"

Thats unless they are going to remove the capital gains tax or tax in general just for Detriot! Then everyone would suddenly want to fix Detriot.

I can't imagine how this would work.  I think a lot of companies would incorporate there maybe and you would have some financial services.

It might become like other tax havens but I can't imagine the US government allowing a tax haven within it's own borders so I don't think it will truly be a free economic zone, it's probably as much rhetoric as anything else and I think most serious business people will see it as such.

The US government needs taxes, lots of them.  It's as simple as that.

Im not sure how it would work either.. the senator proposed it so i take it he has a plan of sorts but i suppose its is just rhetoric..

Just like this discussion i guess its better than doing nothing..

It is all related to cost.
Why remodeling those skyscrapers if it's more costly than building a new "factory" specifically designed for this.
I used to drive daily by one of the largest building on this planet and it's been 66% empty for the last two decades , all because of cost.

Also the thing you're talking about it's called hydroponics (gardening at that scale) , and it's sooo costly ..you would think twice before investing in it.
Also it is yet to become profitable at a larger scale than hobby .

Clearly this isnt something i have thought about at a commercial scale. It was just an idea i got after watching this, im not knowledgeable about the subject matter!

If you see it .. it wouldnt be hard to imagine even at a commercial scale how cost effective it could be.. Just needs space!
Clearly i am no expert and im just throwing an idea out there!

^^ They are saying the business they have is exploding!!!!!

The topic i wanted to induce was conversation about was bringing economic freedom to Detriot because there is a sense of disparity there that people may just not realize. It hard to imagine thats in the US sometimes!

There are abandoned homes and skyscrapers everywhere and i agree its  the ultimate model of the failure of the welfare state.
There has to be something that can be done..

I can't imagine how this would work.  I think a lot of companies would incorporate there maybe and you would have some financial services.

The US government needs taxes, lots of them.  It's as simple as that.

I hear they are legalizing gambling online in New Jersey .. that notion might just be crazy to some and to others its a revenue stream they dont want to miss out on. Similar to how a cop's son, a judge, and some ex goldman sach's employees got medical marijuana going in Washington for medical or recreational use! Some just didnt want to miss the cash crops boat so to speak.

So anything is possible .. A no tax push for companys setting up manufacturing plants that provide jobs and sustainable living like the auto days... maybe 5-10 year relaxation of tax, capital gains or otherwise. Maybe for companys that pony up for 15 year leases on commercial buildings or something..

--
I dunno.. hence the discussion! Even outside of the garden idea i proposed .. There has to be something that can be done, Detriot was the most thriving city in america once so it this could be coming to a city near you! A family near you, a friend close to you and so forth so.. ( thats not hard to imagine )

hey there.. its not on top of the buildings. Its the whole building. "Vertical Gardens", Indoor Hydroponic, No soil needed..

Its pretty desperate in detriot.. if you can get community projects that generate local jobs and provide locally grown foods that vendors like taco trucks or local fast food chains can use as a supply chain thereby creating a stream of work, food, potential for community betterment?   vs letting the abandoned skyscrappers just rot away.. Companys arent looking to setup shop there now!!

At all!!

But people who live there, are rooted there and dont have the means to move ... they still need food and jobs and a way to power the community outside federal handouts that gets swallowed by politicians.

Thats unless they are going to remove the capital gains tax or tax in general just for Detriot! Then everyone would suddenly want to fix Detriot.

I think Detroit could rejuvenate itself easy! They could be an agricultural a state. The have alot of abandoned skyscrapers, they can turn those into huge commercial vertical gardens. Not just for food either but in our diy guru filled world you have guys making self sustainable systems and mixing in the technology to make amazing stuff!

I seen this guy who had a system where the plants, with sensors of course... would email or tweet info about their state. Ph level, water levels, water speed, and a whole host of other stuff. Theoretically you can run it with https://ifttt.com/

So as an example people can share settings just like we share settings for cgminer!!! Except we are share settings for growing food from seeds from whatever strain of tomatoes you are growing ... Imagine even if you didnt know how to garden you could give someone admin rights and enable them to look via view a web cam into the garden and determine if plans need more food, oxygen or whatever and they could text or email the plants <--- lol  .. "instructing them to dispense food or nutrients or increase water flow for themselves!

 Check it out!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IryIOyPfTE

At 8:30 he shows the hardware... Cool stuff! Vertical Gardens filled with Agriculture used to feed the community and rejuvinate the community with jobs, healthy foods, role models and positive people who can muster the mite to make it happen and be successful!

I will hear thousand arguments why it wont work but when you can have a cash crop like corn or medical marijuana that has an endless demand it makes sense to rethink the space we have and use it for for community betterment vs corporate enrichment!

Senator Rand Paul is saying they need to minimize or remove "Capital gains tax!" and other taxes for individuals and corporations as a means of inducing or reversing the free fall Detroit is in.

What do you guys think!?

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/dec/6/rand-paul-pushes-economic-freedom-zones-detroit/

If they remove capital gains tax ... every day trader and real estate agent/broker would be on a plane to Detriot.
At least a lot of people would start incorporating in Detriot. Im not sure its enough to get Detroit out of the hole.

http://www.nydailynews.com/life-style/real-estate/1-buy-house-detroit-article-1.1415014

In fact i think the majority of people in Detriot make earned income and not income made from capital gains so the people may not feel a direct relief from the circumstances they are in.

No tax and "Economic Freedom Zones" .... hmm  ?   Whats the deal bitcointalk, what you think?

A home wiring book will explain all this, it's really not as complicated as it seems.

If you stick to 120v....:

Remember that anybody might have put either a 15 amp or a 20 amp breaker on the same 120v circuit, but that circuit might be more appropriate for 15 than 20, when the size of wire and/or ratings of outlets are taken into consideration. So the existing breaker size doesn't necessarily give you the information you need if you are thinking about constantly running the circuit at or near max.

I would have 12 ga. wire on a 120v 20 amp circuit that I was going to push hard, and not spindly smaller stuff, and I would aim for that circuit to be dedicated to a single outlet.  That's ideal.  (Obviously you need 10 ga if you move up to 240v.)

What else you have on the same circuit matters!  You can't run max load on one outlet while another outlet on the same circuit controls, say, the dishwasher... or you plug a vacuum cleaner into it!  If you do that, then you may pop the circuit.

Space on your breaker board doesn't necessarily mean you have that much unused overhead in your service.  What matters is the load you put on the overall house service - all your electric demand put together compared to your total house service.

If you want to know the amps of your overall service, locate the box where electric service enters your house.  There should be an indication there. You may need to open the box door and take a look at the 'big breaker' there.

If you've got the ability, I think D&T's suggestion makes sense.  Personally, I've got a few solid 120v circuits on new 12 ga copper (which I wired myself!) that don't have a lot of load on them, so I plan to run a couple of miners on them, rather than going to 240v.

You make a good point there perezoso!!

In the garage where i was thinking of setting up the rigs i have a small freezer and a couple computers with a 5 monitor setup and that's it.. My washer and dryer , furnace, water heater are all not in the garage and i think they are on their own circuit. For example my panel shows the "dryer" and there is a 30 next to it so i think it has its own dedicated 30amp circuit.

I work from home in my garage so pausing for thought .. The panel is in the garage so its naturally a good place to set up but..

I think i greatly underestimated the power issues miners may face when scaling upwards. I need to rethink my setup and make considerations for noise and other environmental issues if im going to be in the same room with them all day.

Originally i was thinking of using stack-able GPU frames and literally wheeling the miners to another room in my house when im working in the garage so now im rethinking how im going to set this up.. i would like to end up doing what DeathAndTaxes recommends and run the miners on their own circuit alone but the noise factor is my new hurdle i guess since i cant temporarily relocate them at will to just any socket in my home.
